Both naturally...if the closest targets are over 500 meters away and I have ECM then I'm always active. Other than that, I usually stay in passive and "ping" active.

Passive when I have ECM, active otherwise. Passive without ECM is kind of negated by almost every mech having BAP/BHP.

Yea but I've noticed I barely use passive at all unless i'm trying to ambush people, maybe I should use it more, but I like being able to read my target's health and also I don't want to get caught by 5 enemy mechs by surprise and I like to know what's going on around me and stuff...
This might also be why I'm usually the one getting pounded on all ranges, hasn't really hurt me too bad but I just have to be more cautious that way.
I've just noticed when looking at the big map that usually 3/4 or half of my team just use passive, which probably explains why I feel like I'm the nail sticking out...
Both have their up's and down's I guess.

edit:
Passive when I have ECM, active otherwise. Passive without ECM is kind of negated by almost every mech having BAP/BHP.
Yea that's one thing as well, it just kind of seems as if passive sensors lose some of its potential if the enemy has bap/bhp or maybe a great amount of potential if you don't even have ecm or aecm in that same situation.

Seems like there is no one way.

I prefer passive so I don't get LRMed to death after being more than 500m from my base...or sniped by people I can't hit or see yet...so I sneak around the map...hehe sneak...in a 75 or 65 ton battlemech...yeah I sneak alright

Passive to deter LRM fire and I ping active. The only exeption is if I find myself in a furball I'll keep active going unless I start taking LRM fire.

Like the others have said, it's highly situational.  If it's a non long range map and there are toms and arrows about i go passive and ping for directional guidance.

If everyone is brawling or early game when everyone is in lights, i got active

I'm not sure I see the advantage of being active in that spot. If you're passive its less likely you'll be picked out as the target by another enemy mech you aren't slugging it out with.

I also like to be passive when I'm trying to keep a duel private after going for a straggler. If I can keep other enemies out of tmy business, then I'm highly confident of winning a 1v1 fight (unless it's like Snowball or something).

>_>
I run active all the time and only go passive after I acquire a target.
I never get LRMed and only get LTed randomly.
I don't like running passive too long lots of enemies can start to creep up on me without me knowing just how many there are, only to ping active and realize,OH SHIT, and it only takes one ping for most people to know exactly where you are.

Well if you're brawling, being in passive can make you miss his friend that is joining who's equipped with ECM.  ECM equipped assets are completely radar invisible to players in passive mode.

With so many mechs with BAP/BHP running active in close quarters I feel that I am at a disadvantage. Fighting in a furball I have a tendency to shoot at my current target plus any targets of opportunity that present themselves. I find it easier to keep track of the tactical situation with active radar on WHEN I am in a furball. Incoming reinforcements, incoming ASFs, BA, etc.

I like going passive most of the time.
Active only when I got C3 or LRMs. And sometimes the situation just demands active radar... with ECM of course.

I like active, until I really have to go passive, which is when LTs are in play on marshes. I sometimes go passive when I want to move around obstructed areas and know where I want to be when I turn active back on. I let LRMs hit me most of the time because they just don't hit me hard enough to worry about, even if that makes it a 2 on 1 engagement.

Almost always Active. But as soon as I see Longtom shells or snipers, I go passive and pulse active.
