Microphone not working

I killed my old USB headset, and got another one the other day.  Headset works well providing sound, but the mic does not work. Here's what I have done so far.

Dell XPS 420, Vista 32 Bit, mic/headset both with jacks (not USB) confirmed working on another computer

Right clicking the grey speaker icon and choosing "recording" - "No audio devices installed" (Disabled and Disconnected devices are shown)

Used Dell Drivers and Utilities disc to reinstall Sigmatel STAC92XX C-Major Audio Driver - fails with "Device Object not present, restart the system and run setup again." Uninstalling my current sound drivers does not help, and they get automatically re-installed with the Vista/Microsoft Genaric drivers.

Have found many references to "RealTek HD Audio Manager", but I may have deleted this a while ago. I tried to install  "Vista_Win7_R250_x86.exe" from Realtek site with no success.

Have you installed your motherboards sound drivers? I assuming your motherboad has some kind of onboard sound. You need to install these drivers, and it might fix your problem.

Thanks sleepysheep. Problem Solved. Checking out the Dell support site and downloading the chipset drivers seemed to have no immediate effect, however, downloading and installing the same Sigmatel drivers as mentioned in my OP did succeed, and I now have Microphone and Line In listed on my recording devices.
