CTDs Fixed
« on: August 02, 2010, 12:30:14 AM »
My video card is a gtx285 OC, that is a factory overclock though.

I have been having more frequent CDTs since the summer, since then I have been monitoring my temps and they never get past the low 80's.

Until recently I thought of no reason that the video card was the issue.

a) Other games run fine even when I tax the card more and run a lower framerates, the temps are the same on the high end for any game that pushes the card. None of the other games CTD, lock, or bluescreen. In fact I played all the way through the original Crysis on this same setup.

b) Most of the time I would get CTDs, occassionally a black screen with a lockup, and rarely a bluescreen in MWLL.

c) So for the hell of it I throttled the fan to 100% from its auto settings...3 days now without a single CTD, played countless MWLL games from beginning to end. Typically I would get 3 in a 1hr period. The GPU now runs in the low 70's.

In reality things still don't make sense, after all the mod taps in to the features already provided by the cryegine, so why didn't Crysis do the same? I would think that maybe MWLL is tying into a graphic element that wasn't heavliy used in Crysis. It would seem that whatever it might be it taxes the video card and/or the drivers more so than Crysis ever did.

Even if you don't think it's the video card, do what you can to make it run cooler and see if it helps.

MWLL is more intensive than regular crysis. your GPU was overheating and that was causing driver faults and BSODs. i get concerned when my card goes above 50 degrees. you might want a few more fans.
RAC speed adjustments should only be limited by imagination, ever increasing, ever higher!!!!

It may have fixed it for you, but I still get CTDs.
Crysis sometimes crashes even when I just got the server list open.

There are various different PC-related crashes, so it's hardly possible that one fix would work for many people ;)
For example I don't have any crashes at all... with exception of playing in DirectX 9 mode. Out there I get crashed after ~1 minute after starting the game. In DX10 it's all perfectly fine.

Yep, MWLL is much much more demanding than regular Crysis. One sole reason for this is the fact that you have everything scaled up few times while preserving acceptable level of details - so instead of 2 meter player you have 20 meter Mech. Instead of 1 tree to hide behind you need 20. And so on. Playable area on maps is also bigger in most cases than the one in Crysis. There are also tons of animations - not only for characters but also units, turrets, and stuff. There's much much more particle effect (each player carry multiple different weapons and can fire them all at a time), lights and other stuff. So the fact that "other  games run fine" doesn't make it sure that MWLL will run fine - it's much more demanding than most of other games available (that's mostly because games demanding much from GPU are now made for PS3/Xbox too, so they are very limited in resource pool).

I intend to get me a new MB in the next few days.
This because the one I have now have so few expansion slots I have my sound card right next to my Graphics card.
You cant even get a finger between the fan on my GPU and the sound card.
I'm awaiting a reply from the dealer I'm buying from on some questions I had regarding the MB, once I get that I will place my order.
This new card will have more expansion slots and thus make it possible to get more venting for my GPU.
I'm hoping this will help with my CTDs.

Any other suggestions anyone may have I'm willing to listen.
I'll see about maybe adding another fan or two if I got the space for it.

If you don't have it yet - buy a fan for Computer case. Most cases have rear slot(s) for fans.
I recently bought 120mm and I improved quite a bit - now the CPU fan doesn't go up to the highest level at which it gets quite noisy, so my room is more quiet now ^_^ It should help your sound & graphic card too. At least to some degree.

BTW: Crashes to desktop might be caused by overheating sound card perhaps? MWLL is quite intense on sound channels usage sometimes. I never heard of such case, but I also never heard of someone having GPU fan so closely to sound sweeping it with a hot air all the time. If you'll get a new Motherboard - give us a note if the situation improved :) Maybe it'll help other people too!

I already have a rear mounted fan, 120mm one so not much more I can do with that.
As for the other issue, I will let you know how it works.
Should know more by the end of the week, or early next week.

This may not be the most practical, but thought about watercooling for the GC? If it's really getting that hot it's always an idea.

I tried your suggestion Zippitt. My card is a factory overclocked 8800GT from MSI.

I set the fan on my card to 100% but I still crashed while examining my Nova Cat. The temperature at the time of the crash was 70° C. That isn't that high I guess.

But I didn't give up and pushed harder. I underclocked my card while still running the fan at 100%. But sadly, that didn't work as well. I still crashed while killing an Uziel with my 5 large lasers. The temperature was just 60° this time.

Even though it didn't help, I'm still glad I had something to try. Thanks Zippit.

suggestion: while running "hot" games on desktops, put either dry ice or liquid nitrogen in there to cool it down. it usually works for dry ice, haven't tried liquid nitro yet..

***DISCLAIMER:  If you damage your computer doing this its not my fault. I've done this myself sometimes running CPU-intensive games, but it might not work for you.***

People are stupid if they think they can have their own way.

... that is, unless they have HEAP rounds, high-explosive homing missiles, and terawatt lasers on a walking weapons platform, that is...

PLEASE NO ONE EVER DO THIS OMG!!!

No really, don't ever even think about it.

Unless you are trying to OC your CPU to 5ghz+ or do the same crazy OC on your GC, you don't need dry ice or nitrogen. Also you need special heat sinks to use them, and it cost crazy stupid amounts for the ice and nitrogen to keep your PC cooled by it. And you goto keep topping it up or your PC explodes, your also using stuff that really shouldn't be kept in the house.

Buy water cooling or just buy more/better fans....
