Is every ATI+32bit system crashing?
« on: August 02, 2010, 11:31:41 AM »
Simple question:
Do you own an ATI graphics card and are running a 32 bit system?
If you crash to desktop while playing MW:LL on a regular basis, without any notification choose the according poll option.

If you do not crash, while using ATI on a 32 bit system, please state your specs, driver version, os, etc.

I'm using a ATI HD4870 with a 64 bit driver.   The driver will crash (and usually restart) once per game.

(CTDs are much less frequent for me.)

I too have an ATI card and am on 32 bit winxp. I ctd for every 2 game hours or so. So people with nvidia cards and/or on 64 bit os don't get crashes? I thought it was indiscriminant since I hear from pretty much every player how they ctd every so often.

I have an ATI 5870, WinXP 32bit SP3, maxed out RAM, it CTDs very often when novacats are around. My crashes are "clean", I am always able to restart the game immediately.
I suspect it is not limited to the novacat, it is possible that there is another, less common, source for the same problem, but if we don't remove the novacat from the game for a while we can't be sure of that.

In 0.1.0 I didn't have this kind of crash, it crashed some times after many hours of play and for different reasons (I think those were really related to Crysis or drivers, I can tell the difference because that kind of crash leaves an hidden error dialog behind the frozen game screen), totally unrelated to the current issue.

it's topic about 32bit system, not 64 ;)

I guess that SUCKER found some neat correlation between these two. So far noone managed to make MWLL run nice & smooth with such setup. Good good... maybe it'll bring us closer to solving a problem or at least: MWLL wiki will have a new section in the Troubleshoothing ;)

What skywalker said. Please only post your specs if you got an ATI graphics card running on a 32 bit system and do not crash.
In the other 2 threads I created there was a trend that indicates that this constellation will definatly cause massive crashing to desktop, clean. Not related to any specfic asset, like NovaCats.
If I am right about this, this thread should not get any further posts, just more votes :)

I posted about my 64 bit experiences in case it helped you work out the 32 bit problem...

had 64 bit plus ATI and hardly ever crashed. Switched to ATI and 32 bit OS and started crashing. I just switched back to 64 bit OS lastnight. We will see if it goes away.

5850 and WinXP32 SP3, crashed now and then. Swapped to Win7 Pro 32bit, dx9 crashed like a madman. Running dx10 now, crashes might be as infrequent as once a week. DX9 is still unplayable for me as of 0.3.2, as per my last attempt to run it.

I voted crashes all the time, because that's what it did.... in dx9. There's no option for dx10 32 bit (Vista and 7), you might wanna add more vote options, ie

-crashes all the time in 32bit with ati (dx9)
-sometimes/barely crashes in 32bit with ati (dx9)
-never crashes in 32bit with ati (dx9)
-crashes all the time in the 32bit with ati (dx10)
-sometimes/barely crashes in 32bit with ati (dx10)
-never crashes in 32bit with ati (dx10)

I would have voted Sometimes/barely crashes in 32bit with ati (dx10)

^^ this makes me sad.  What CPU are you running?  I was/am going to test basically this build + phenomII (AMD 6 core 1090T) this weekend.

Was hoping that might help the NCat issue, since the box I use for MWLL is old Athlon64 x2 and ATI 1900XT + legacy drivers.

Here's a thing I just noticed. Ever since 0.3 is out I can play it utilizing my 64 bit capacity. Ever before I had to use the 32 bit option since the pc/programm would not allow to select 64 bit. Now, by the time I was able to use 64 my crashes which I had before fairly regularly ceased. The only thing to happen is that the game freezes occasionaly (2 times until now, so not big a deal). It seems that the main problem lies within the 32bit version considering the other posts and threads.  I use a NVidia GTS250 and an I7 processor.

I voted No, because I use ATI and 32 bit crysis, now I realize the poll said 32bit OS. so disregard my vote.

Sorry about that.

This might be valuable information. Did you use DX9 or DX10 when running on WinXp 32 bit?
And did you play for more than one hour without crashing with Win7 32bit + DX10?
What driver version did you have installed? Always the same, or did you try a different on in Win 7? Maybe updated from an older one.
Everything might be of importance, because you seem to have the only 32 bit system using an ATI card that does not constantly crash.

Windows XP 32bit doesn't support dx10 (theres a half-way hack in, but it's not TRUE dx10)

Windows XP 32bit SP3
(No dx10, therefore dx9) It wasn't toooo bad, few crashes here n there
I was using 10.5 drivers and catalyst control center

Windows 7
I started with the 10.5 drivers/ccc for 7, force dx9 through launcher, it was kinda bad
0.3.1 came out and dx9 became crash every 20 minutes, so in desperation I tried dx10. I was only getting 20 odd FPS, but I managed a full week without a crash, playing between 0 and 4 hours a night.
0.3.2 came out, using 10.5 drivers still, and my dx10 fps has skyrocketed back to the old dx9 levels.

To answer one of your final questions, I've been able to play 5-6 hours straight without a crash in dx10, and have gone a week with varying levels of play, without a single crash, the worst crash streak I've had in dx10 was 3 crashes in one night, spaced out a good hour between 2 of them, and 20-30m before then next, this might have been triggered by repeat map reloads to fix cbill bugs in ToS mode. DX10 in win7 32bit has 1.5 thumbs up from me, just because it doesn crash now and then. You don't wanna know where the 2 thumbs are for dx9.
