To all US gamers
« on: August 05, 2010, 04:34:26 AM »
Here was I, believing only we Germans had problems with politics on a crusade against "violent" videogames. Well, turns out I was wrong.

There are many anti-gaming advocates, I'm afraid. People such as Al and Tipper Gore, many Republicans, many Democrats, and Joe Lieberman.

It's fear mongering through ignorance, really. I hate politicians.

The funny thing is, I have yet to see a legitimate study done that shows anything but a DECREASE in violent crimes since video games came out.  There's a great Penn and Teller Bullshit on gaming and violence, in the end they bust the myth that FPS games are teaching children to use weapons.

The idea was to show that enjoying using a gun in an FPS doesn't translate to using a real gun. The poor kid was crying after he shot that rifle, I'd say that's pretty good proof that games do not teach you to be some cold-blooded killer.

Sure games don't teach you how to be a killer or how to use a real gun, but I think the main reason the boy was crying was the recoil.
From what I understand (haven't fired a real gun and don't plan to try either ;) ) unless you expect it and are strong enough to compensate for it and know how to, you'll get a nice big bruise.
If they had gotten someone older, they might just have liked it, which still doesn't make someone a killer, but wouldn't have been the point of the show either.

Don't talk about what you THINK guns do if you've never even fired one. He was firing an M16; even to someone of his size, there is very little recoil. He wasn't crying because of a non-existent bruise, he was crying because he found the experience of shooting to be terrifying.  Thus, saying that video game shooting = real shooting was shown to be a complete crock.

By the way, next time you're in Las Vegas, I will personally take you to a gun range. HOOAH!

Yah, M16's essentially fire glorified 22 caliber bullets.  In any regard if you hold the gun right recoil generally isn't an issue, but if wasn't wearing ear plugs... firing most guns is like turning your computer speakers to max with your head next to them.

They've had this anti violence since before I knew what they meant.  I don't see it ever gaining ground tbh.

Me, too please?  I really wanna know how it feels to fire a real gun, compared to gaming...

I do have ASGs, so I got some basic knowledge of how to hold (and more importantly NOT to hold) them ^^

I've fired a 12 gauge (slugs and just target load), a Mini-14 (.223 so it hardly kicked at all), FNP 9mm and .45 cal, Glock 9mm, 30-06.  it's all about how you hold the rifle, I fired off a good 100 or so odd 12 guage target loads shooting clays and didn't get a bruise.  And honestly, all the FPS games in the world won't teach you how to even come close to shooting a pistol accurately, let alone a rifle.  someone older might be able to get a good idea for a rifle from playing alot, but you're not gunna hit the broad side of a barn with pistols without some practice and guidance.  If everyone just had FPS games as practice for shooting the real thing, you'd have shootouts exactly like the movies where nobody hits anything.

Hell yeah, let's make it a big MWLL gun range party! I can show you noobs how to shoot  :P

I've fired quite a few guns in my day, too many to list. Even fired some REALLY cool stuff in the Army, like the M2 .50cal and the M240 machine gun.  I personally own a Soviet-made Mosin Nagant rifle from 1943.
Man, guns are so awesome. Funny thing is, the fear of guns stems from ignorance of how to safely operate one; people who shoot regularly and own guns are generally some of the safest people you'll ever meet.

guns are so easy to shoot, you dont even need video games to teach you how (if that were some way possible in the first place, as far as I know in most FPS games all you see is the crosshairs and barrel, so perhaps you strap it to your hip?  Or do you hold it over your shoulder?  Or how do you hold it?)  Dam.  I just figured it out.  It's those retarded 3rd person shooters that are teaching them how to hold a gun.  I knew they had a terrible flaw besides the obvious "hai look i can look around the corner without actually going around it!"
