[BUG] Corrupt Installation
« on: August 22, 2010, 02:57:54 AM »
Probable Corrupt Installation/Download of MWLL v0.3.2

Reproduced: 10/10

Steps followed:

  • Deleted directory <D:\Program Files (x86)\Electronic Arts\Crytek\Crysis\Mods\mwll>
  • Executed MWLL-OpenBeta-Full-0.3.0.exe (Download via torrent)
  • Executed MWLL-OpenBeta-Patch-0.3.1.exe (Download via torrent)
  • Executed MWLL-OpenBeta-Patch-0.3.2.exe (Download via Direct Download)
  • Executed MWLL.AutoUpdater.exe - FAILED!
  • Extracted update.torrent from Updates folder
  • Downloaded MWLL-OpenBeta-Patch-0.3.3.zip (Download via torrent)
  • Extracted MWLL-OpenBeta-Patch0.3.3.zip
  • Overwritten files in <D:\Program Files (x86)\Electronic Arts\Crytek\Crysis\Mods\mwll>
  • Executed MWLL.Launcher.exe
  • Launched MWLL
  • Viewed "Wandering Samuri Intro"
  • Receive Message: "Warning: Your MWLL installation has modified files. please revert them to their original state to play"
  • MWLL Exits
  • Wash, rinse, repeat

Could the downloads have been corrupted perhaps, someone intentionally seeding bad packages? Short of full re-install of Crysis, something I am loathed to do, I can't think of anything else since I'm following the instructions to the letter.

No I hadn't seen that topic when I posted. Despite that I'm still getting the exact same problem as before.

I've tried installing files downloaded from different mirrors and I've extracted the Direct Downloaded .zip archive given in the thread you linked to to no avail.

It seems God, fate or Karma don't want me playing...

I'm convinced the runtime error from the Auto Updater is the problem.

Dude, you just need to update your .NET framework. That's why you're getting the runtime error.

Get it here: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=9cfb2d51-5ff4-4491-b0e5-b386f32c0992&displaylang=en

The error you're getting is a known problem in the currently released Auto Updater, which happens when download completes and installation would start, but for that it is first checking if MWLL is running. During that process the program gets a system error, which is unexpected, therefore unhandled, resulting in a crash.

However, that doesn't explain why you're unable to run the game after manually installing 0.3.2 using the zip archive.

I understand that this is a very annoying issue (I had faced quite often with that error message myself), but I'm afraid you'll have to wait til 0.4.0 for a real fix.

Please make sure that you do everything exactly as follows:
 - Delete your MWLL installation directory (Crysis\Mods\mwll).
 - Download the MWLL-OpenBeta-Full-0.3.0.exe, MWLL-OpenBeta-Patch-0.3.1.exe and MWLL-OpenBeta-Patch-0.3.2.exe files from mwlldownload.com (preferably via torrent, to avoid data corruption) and install them.
 - Download the 0.3.2 patch zip archive and extract it to your MWLL installation folder, overwriting all files.
 - Use MWLL.Launcher.exe to start MWLL.

Let me know if you encounter any further issues. I'm deeply sorry for your inconvenience (the Auto Updater is my responsibility).

Edit: I assume you have a typo in your post; there is no MWLL-OpenBeta-Patch-0.3.3.zip. The next version we are going to release will be 0.4.0.

For the record, I have seen this fix it and make the auto-updater run.
I'm not going to argue with the guy who wrote the software, but it is something to consider.

@ (TTL)ShdNX: Cheers mate. Don't stress over it too much. I'm a software developer myself, I know how hard it is to catch everything. I'll update my .NET Framework package and get back to you on if it worked or not. And yes it was a typo, it should've been 0.3.2.zip

@(TTL)toasterpastries: Cheers for the tip; I'll give it a go.

Yes, your tip was really good (thanks for that!), but I have the crashlogs from Tortured_Soul (the Auto Updater automatically sends them to me), so I can see what the problem is.

Thank you for your understanding. :)
The Auto Updater and the Beta Launcher both needs .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 to run. I'm fairly certain that you have it installed. If you're running on Windows Vista or Windows 7, you can skip this step because .NET comes with them.
