Random extremey low FPS spurts on good system -- please help!
« on: August 23, 2010, 04:01:07 AM »
Here's the problem: I'll be running MW:LL just fine and peachy when I spawn on the server, then as soon as I walk into the mech hangar, my fps drops from about 30-40 fps to 3-4 fps. Regardless of what direction I look or where I (try to) go, it remains at that low fps, for at least a minute or so. Then after that, it randomly shoots back up to the faster frame rate, even though I haven't changed locations. This happens every few minutes or so, and it almost always happens when I go into the mech hangar. This naturally makes the game just about impossible to play. I've also noticed that changing my graphics settings doesn't prevent it from happening -- turning everything to low doesn't help one bit.

I've been having this issue since I started playing MW:LL on my old PC. I just got a new PC recently and thought that surely this problem would have gone away ... but it hasn't -- infact things are almost completely the same. I tried just about every regular remedy that I could think of -- you know, checking drivers, defragging, deleting the cache, etc etc.

First of all, here are the specs for my old and new machines respectively. When I built my new machine I salvaged a few parts that were pretty new on the "old" one -- namely my graphics card, PSU, and DVD drive.

"Old" PC:

Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit
EVGA Nforce motherboard
Athlon 64 X2 4400+ 2.2 ghz dual core
Geforce 260 GTX 896 MB graphics
4 GB DDR1 RAM
Western Digital 250 GB HD
Rosewill 650 W PSU

Here's the New PC:

Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit
Asus Rampage III Micro ATX (SLI, bla bla bla) motherboard
Intel i7 930 Quad Core
Geforce 260 GTX 896 MB graphics
6 GB DDR3 Triple Channel 1600 RAM
Hitachi 3 GB/s 1 TB HD
Rosewill 650 W PSU

I also checked that this issue is happening in Crysis Wars as well. What the hell is the issue? I figured that if it was my graphics card that my FPS would be low and STAY low if it couldn't handle the settings. What gives? Thanks in advance!

The hangar lag bug seems to effect a lot of people, but I've never come across it.  Is there anybody with an ATi card that has that issue?

Try typing "profile 6" in console when you're playing, and see what's happening when you start getting choppy.  The reports will be in technospeak, which I can't translate, but you can identify critical moments like when a player joins, when a new mech spawns, etc.  Those sorts of events tend to make me freeze for half a second or so, and then it will go right back to 70 FPS.

Edit:  Type "profile 0" in console to make that overlay go away.

I had exactly the same problem when I was trying out Win7. After being unsuccessful with fixing it and being disappointed with general MWLL performance on Win7/DX11, I reinstalled WinXP back and never had any such performance issue afterward.

edit:

Here's my system specs: Core2Due 3.0Ghz, 4Gm DDR2, HiS ATI 4970, MWLL is installed on Seagate 500Gb SATA HDD, WinXP 32 SP3, DX9 with latest update.

Thanks for the replies.... but I really am not going to revert to Windows XP just to get this game running. I was hoping there might be an easy fix but apparently not.

It's just funny that I have teh same exact issue on two different computers. Any chance reinstalling Crysis and MW:LL will help?

Run the game in dx9 and see if you have the issue. If you don't then its motion blur (which is forced on, on any setting in dx10) that is causing the problem. There are ways to force it off, but I can't remember off the top of my head.

If it still happens in DX9, then you are going to need to check CPU and GC temps, make sure graphic card drivers are updated, and sound drivers are updated. Also please make sure you have the latest version of DX9 installed, win 7 DOES NOT come with the latest updates.

I have an ATi card and never get that lag.  I also run on Win7 64bit and just run in forced DX9, it's better.  I also turn off motion blur, my settings are generally pretty low because my CPU bottlenecks performance, and I never drop that low really at all, even though my average fps are about 20 :/

I agree, forcing DX9 and turning off motion blur should do the trick.

I'll try turning off motion blur but why would forcing DX9 solve anything? Obviously my system is capable of running DX10, so is there some issue in DX10 that causes the random low fps moments?

I get something similar occasionally, especially Inferno. FPS take a nosedive and gameplay seems to stutter for a few seconds until it returns to normal. I wouldn't complain if it didn't always happen when I'm trying to aim :-\

Dx9 mode, if i remember correctly (I could be mistaken) doesn't have motion blur. Thus it's the easist way to disable it. Oh and if you think going into settings and disabling it, disables it, your mistken, it does NOTHING. Think of the graphic settings in MWLL as a spring. Doesn't matter how much you press it down it just springs back up lol.

Oh and your machine isn't good enough to run DX10 settings btw, sorry to disapoint you, I used to own a Nvidia 260, DX10 was just about playable on high, which has none of the DX10 effects (Being DX10 settings are all very high).

Running in DX10 mode will increase your stability by ALOT, if you run in X64 mode. Far far more stable, but you won't be seeing any graphical enhancments over Dx9, just stability benifits.

You have to make a config file and set all the graphical settings you want turned on and off to 100% guarantee  to get the settings you want (At least for the moment). I can't remember the filename though :(

See that's the thing ... I tried it yesterday, for the hell of it on Very High settings in a half populated game of MWLL and got a steady 30 or so FPS the entire time. That is when I wasn't getting the hangar FPS drop bug. So maybe it's not blazing fast, but it certainly is capable.

I'll try forcing DX9 today to see if that fixes it.

Try hitting stuff at 30fps. Yes it's fine. Now try it on 50-60fps. It's FAR better, and easier to hit stuff. My friend has my card now, and he struggles to run the game on high, so I dunno. He runs DX9 now and can run high perfectly fine, just not in DX10 mode.

before you force dx9 you should delete the "shaders" folder found in my doc\my games\crysis.

Yep I told it to force DX9 and all my problems disappeared ... the game also runs very very fast as well which I find kind of silly considering it still looks basically the same as it did on Very High settings. Oh well ... thanks for the help!
