If i remember correctly, shooting a machine gun at a destroyed section will do damage to mechs as the 3x damage to the CT would apply and make it do minimal damage. (it's still pitiful damage, but hey, you can shoot them and do SOME damage)
Any problem can be, in fact, solved with enough explosive ordinance. If the problem persists, you did not use enough ordinance. As such, use more tank.

when used in a pair to do least as much damage as a small laser

Ahh... but therein lies the falacy.

Consider the other factors, the MG has a range of 1600m, the Small Laser is restricted to 300m maximum.

There is more to balancing a weapon than simple damage output.

Maybe. I still want to plinkplink away at mechs with them though. I don't care if it's half or a quarter the damage of a small laser, give back my plink :(

Like most ballistic weapons in MWLL, the machine gun does not have a hard stop at 700m.

Try it.   :)

MG will do minimal damage to aerospace and (usually) no damage to 'Mechs or heavy vehicles.

However, let's qualify expectations here by asking: "what do you really expected out of a 0.5 ton weapon"?

Well considering a MG with ammo is about 3000 pounds and an elemental is about 2200 pounds, according to CBT, I would say the MG should still do some damage to mechs and vehicles. I don't think anyone would argue that an elemental can do a lot more damage than a single MG. Pound for pound the MG is lacking.

Given its role, it isn't.  The CBT machine gun can hurt, but it doesn't have a range much greater than the small laser.  It's shorter, if I recall.
Thanks for the view.

CBT stats
Small Laser: Range 1/2/3, Heat 1, Damage 3, Weight 0.5 tons, Crits 1
Machine Gun: Range 1/2/3, Heat 0, Damage 2, Weight 0.5 tons, Crits 1, Ammo 100/0.5 tons (note, ammo is number of "bursts" from the MG)

What type of pounds are you referring to? :o
The less pounds=more weight type?
In CBT an MG weighs half a ton while an Elemental weighs a full ton...

What I mostly don't like is that a MG does less damage than the BA AC2.  Actually does the mech MG and BA bear autocannon have the same damage profile now?

The thing about MGs in CBT is that they have minimal effects against heavy armour except at close ranges, where the hail of bullets at their near maximum velocities can, eventually, shatter armour. They're still effective against infantry over normal MG ranges (several hundred metres).

My 82 pound Browning .50 cal could rip apart a helicopter without a doubt. Give me a machine gun that weighs 1000 pounds and I am pretty sure it is firing a rather big slug. The 25mm on the Bradley can kill tanks pretty well and that can be assembled and disassembled by a single person.

So at the very least, I expect a machine gun that holds the weight of 1000 pounds and has 800 rounds per ton of ammo to at least mess up a BA with ease. I know that the weapons in the BT/MW universe are not to scale or fully realistic, but if the machine guns are effective against nothing then just remove them altogether.

I believe the answer we've come up with is, "A reason to exist."

They kill BA just fine, dont understand the machine gun hate.

Its also not bad at hitting vtols with to either scare them away, or if they are silly enough, destroy them if they stick around.
