However, let's qualify expectations here by asking: "what do you really expected out of a 0.5 ton weapon"?

I believe the answer we've come up with is, "A reason to exist."

It's kind of the reason I asked in the first place :-\

An mgun weighs one twelfth what an AC/2 weighs, and costs 1/15th as much (empty*, IS, sarna.net-wise). It is more damaging against Aeros and 2/3 as effective against BA (MWLL).

If that is not sufficient reason for you to use it, that is fine -- but that's not the same as "no one can find any reason for it to exist". Could you justify 14 tons on an Owens or Harasser going to two AC/2s (with ammo)? But I hope AC2s aren't actually that heavy in MWLL, since they aren't that strong =|

*Are sarna.net weapon weights given for the empty weapon?

But I've seen it be used against aeros and BA with little to no effect.

Also, I think AC2's are useless too  :-\

Keep in mind, guys, that all weapons in MWLL get a FREE ton of ammo. Thus, the MG only weighs 0.5 tons (same as a small laser) but has ~5x the range and inflicts heavier damage versus aircraft. It is also the superior weapon to use against BA at that weight. These are its roles. For half a friggin' ton you cannot ask for much more than that.

Imagine if you will what would happen if you took a Puma C and replaced the CERMBLs with Machine Guns and extra ammo. It would be carrying 8 MGs, now all of a sudden we have an almost perfect AA unit, capable of firing constantly without fear of heat build up and carrying 7 tons of extra ammo. That's a minute and a half of constant fire. Are MGs pointless now?

However, I propose that within ~150m the machine gun should be doing damage to mech and armor assets.

Also, I never, EVER want to see a machine gun boat like the Puma above. I was just making a point that machine guns only FEEL worthless because they are mounted in small numbers and don't inflict horrendous burst damage.

Oh, wow.

This troll again?

If I'm shooting a Vtol that's not moving, and puffs of smoke are showing up to indicate a hit, what am I doing wrong exactly?
Also, the MG's are useless against BA that even remotely know what they're doing.

I can go fight a mech, and he can shoot his MG's all he wants.
As long as I don't stop moving, or act totally predictable, he won't be able to hit me enough to kill me, if he hits me at all.

Tell you what, I wish the warhammer b would ditch the 2 mgs for another free ton of ammo.

Being able to carry an extra reload of MRMs would be damn site more useful in general

This I fully agree with. I have more luck using the MRMs against BA anyways.

To be fair, you might be surprised at just how effective Mg's can be against air units.

Mgun Stats (from wiki)
Damage: 2.2
Type: Mgun
Multiplier vs Air units: 9.5
RoF: 1200 rounds per minute
Range: 700m listed, effective range is unknown, possibly infinite.

Misc Info
Damage per shot vs Air: 20.9
Damage per sec. vs Air: 418
Magazine size: 700 rounds
Continuous Firing Time: 35 seconds
Reload Cost: 50 Cbills

Note this is per Mgun, so like Zeus said, if you had a unit with any decent amount of Mguns (since they're fricking half a ton each), it would be fantastic AA.  Hell, a Hollander with some mguns, BHP, GECM, and a decent amount of ammo would be fantastic AA.  That amount of Mguns would be decent against BA, but it would be pretty useless against anything else.
Played MWLL for Guillermo del Toro.

Well considering a MG with ammo is about 3000 pounds and an elemental is about 2200 pounds, according to CBT, I would say the MG should still do some damage to mechs and vehicles. I don't think anyone would argue that an elemental can do a lot more damage than a single MG. Pound for pound the MG is lacking.

What type of pounds are you referring to? :o
The less pounds=more weight type?
In CBT an MG weighs half a ton while an Elemental weighs a full ton...

I've often wondered... if an Elemental is a ton... the gun he's carrying must weigh less than half a ton right?

So instead of two MGs, WHY THE HELL CAN'T I STRAP TWO PISS LASERS TO MY WING MIRRORS AND REACH OUT OF THE COCKPIT TO SHOOT THEM?  They'd do about seven thousand times more damage for the same mass, and they obviously don't generate any heat since the BAs never seem to shutdown...

King Leer said that Mgun has 1,600m effective range.

For sure - I would have 4 BA yellow light sabres strapped to my mech for close range combat.

Being in possession of knowledge that wiki does not have -- an excellent time to contribute! ;)
