Unit use as of 3.2
« on: September 02, 2010, 07:20:41 AM »
So, a while back ago, I saw a thread much like this one, asking which mechs/tanks/aeros you use during the course of a game.
The thread is dead now, and I wanted to see how much everyone's use of mechs etc. has changed.

Just say which units you use in each weight class and why.
Also, if you regularly mix it up, you can add that in too.

I usually start in a UAC 10 Uller, because of it's relatively high speed, and hitting power.

I then move up to a Bushy B, because it is an excellent close range brawler with good armour that is good against aeros.

For Heavies, I usually grab the Madcat with the lasers and Gauss, so I can devastate enemies at any range, without much fear of running out of ammo. It's also deadly against aeros.

Once I make it up to Assault, I use the MK 2 with the UAC 20's and srms, because of it's close/med range punch.

I usually start off by parking an APC somewhere and going BA. By the time I get bored of that, I can usually afford either a Tbolt Sulla or a Puma of some kind (I like them all, really). The only medium Mech I really enjoy is the Shadow Cat B. It's great fun to go out in a pair of them with a clanmate on TS and tear apart assault Mechs. I lurrrve the Vulture all around except the 40 LRM variant, so I'll either take one of those or a Loki C (<3 LBX20s and speed). Sometimes I'll take an MRM Catapult, if the enemy team is already in assault Mechs. The Mauler C is my favorite Mech at the moment. 2 UAC20s and MRM20s, backed up by four flamers... can you say laserboat bane? Apart from that, the Madcat Mk2's UAC/SSRM variant is really fun, but that's pretty much all I like for assault Mechs.

The Warhammer Prime is a really fun Mech to use - the damage output of its lasers is, as Invictus once said, surprisingly adequate - but at 91K it's a bit too expensive. The UAC20 Thanny also looks good, but I have yet to use it.

Uller A, then straight to Madcat B for the rest of the round.  I hate myself.

Uller A, then straight to Madcat B for the rest of the round.  I hate myself.

;D  I've managed to kick the Uller A to Gauss Mad Dog/PPC Nova Cat habit just recently so I feel your pain.

Uller A, Owens B, Raven Prime or Hollander from the start depending on map and when I join (Raven for late games is great, Hollanders only good if I know they have pilots on their team).

If I have to go a Medium then Shadow Cat B or C or Bushy A or C.

Heavies, any Mad Cat will do or a Gauss Mad Dog, but I usually just buy a Huit A(UAC5s Gauss and Arrow) or Laser Huit if I'm feeling mean.  I'm happy to sit in an Assault Tank or Clan Heavy 'mech for the rest of the match.

I don't like the Atlas or MkII (too slow and big), & I can usually afford better than an Awesome or a Mauler so I don't use them as much these days as I'd like to. Maybe if the Mad Dogs and Mad Cats were 20-30k more expensive I might be seen in Maulers, Awesomes & Warhammers again, like in 0.2, but the global increase in armour levels and the cheapness of clan Heavies mean that I don't use them a lot these days).

At the start I usually select uziel b. It has the highest armor of all start level mechs, doubles as aa if necessary and mrm gives decent punch for finishing damaged light mechs. If I feel like sniping I go for 2xlbl osiris. I go passive, jumpjet to a good position and stay away from enemy mechs as much as possible, masc-out when taking return fire. If I've joined late to a game I get uller b and hammer heavier mechs with ac10 and srm, masc-out when getting return fire.

If I survive after accumulating enough cbills or die after promoting I get uller c. Those 4xcmpl cut through light and medium mechs like hot knife through butter, though one must be careful not to be outnumbered as it's armor is weak.

If lots of brawling is going on I get bushwacker b. Excellent medium mech but has ammo issues so when like 2 lbx and 30 srm rounds left it's time to start heading back home. If it has become a sniperfest I get shadowcat c.

For heavies warhammer a and c are my favorites, for long range and short range engagements respectively. Loki c with its 2xclbx20 is also a good choice me thinks.

For assaults when I can afford I get awesome c (4xppc), mk2 prime or b. It's much fun sneaking to a group of lrm boats from behind with mk2 b ;D.

I usually start in an Owens B for the brawling capabilities. The MASC helps survivability, when its time to run away. Sometimes I'll take out a Hollander C for AA if I see my team needs it.

Since I'm still relatively new and inexperienced at the game, I usually skip choosing a medium (just a lack of knowledge and experience more than any other reason) and I stick with Owens B until I have ranked and gotten some C-bills.

For a Heavy, I have used a Warhammer with some success. But my inexperience means that I usually die relatively quick after I graduate from a Ligh.

I  try and stay away from Assaults because it would be a waste of cash atm for me to field one. I'm a speed freak, so even the "faster" Heavies drive me to disctraction, when I pilot one.  :P

So far, I have avoided air units and armor. Some day, I'll log onto an empty server and work at learning the finer points of each.

What I start with heavily depends on my mood and the map I'm on...
for the start I pick either an Owens B or Uller A, however the Harasser prime has become my favourite lately.
later on I switch to a Puma Prime or B, or a Bushy B.
Stopped using the scat for brawling, since the Bushy offers way better protection and weaponry for the same price.
The only Heavy I chose from time to time is the Madcat A, not that much armor for a heavy, but decent speed, and awesome firepower, though it suffers from heat, but i can handle that... ;)

Sometimes I decide to fly, then I pick either a Hawkmoth A or Sulla B.

I don't like Tanks and Assaults, they are too slow... :P

I pilot something until people start using ammo hogs, and then I run out in an APC and try to drive it into enemy legs.  Then I hop out as a heavily-armed battle armor and pepper them with grenades.
Thanks for the view.

---early game---
If i join a game late, UAC 10 Kitfox OR ERLBL Osiris - makes a great support mech when the other team is focused on shooting the bigger guys.

I'm there at the beginning SSRM Ownes - MASC = love  SSRM packs a punch

---ranked upp'd---
Almost any scat variant i can afford.  energy boat cougar on cold maps, bushy B if the other team is being very aggressive.

---mid game---
APC if they're fielding boat, set up for deep BA strikes
LBX20 Scat for flank attacks
Arrow Cata - IF i have too

---late game---
Generally stay medium for fun, but will field heavies and assualts as needed.

If I join a game in progress I'll run with a Raven and spot for fire support. I'll sit in this setup if the team takes advantage. If they aren't using missiles or LT then I'll swap to something heavier once I get enough cbills.

If in a fresh game I'll run as the SRM Owens and brawl a bit. Usually people take ravens and ullers for some odd reason and the Owens can have a field day.

This will usually last me until I can get a PPC Uziel, though I'll take a MRM40 catapult too depending on the map. When its time for something heavy I'll use the ERPPC Awesome or the LL version depending on rank. Though I'll use a UAC20 Mauler sometimes too.. that thing is just beastly.

Occasionally you'll see me run with something like a Catapult Prime, a Longtom, or some other crazy thing. I'll fill in a role if its needed.

IS:
Osiris Prime ->Bushwacker A or Uziel Prime-> Thanatos C or B or Warhammer Prime-> Mauler Prime or Awesome Prime.

Clan: Uller A(only if I'm forced to) -> Cougar Prime -> Puma Prime or SCAT Prime -> Loki Prime sometimes Vulture Prime -> Madcat Prime or MKII Prime.

I have a blast in the Osiris, Cougar, Uziel, Warhammer, and Thanatos, fun fun fun.
I have fun in the SCAT, Bushwacker, Loki and Mauler.
I only use Assaults when I have to, other than the Mauler I don't enjoy using them and Clan heavies make this game boring easy mode.

I used to go with the AC20 Osiris in 0.2.0 but as of 0.3.0 it has less armor than a Harasser so I usually start with an APC + BA Heavy Micro Laser + Manpack PPC.
After amassing a small fortune and several ranks, I usually go with the LBX20 Bushwacker, Mauler Prime, or the MRM40 Catapult if someone is NARCing.

49k: Owens B*/ Uller A/ Osiris A, or BA
60K: Uller C* or Cougar B
70K: Puma C*, Puma Prime, Catapult B, any Shadowcat, or Bushy B
80K: fail rank* = no change
90K: Demolisher Prime* or Vulture A
100K: Vulture B*/ Novacat B/ Loki C/ Awesome Prime
110k: Novacat A*/ Awesome C/ Madcat A/ Madcat C/ Mauler C/ Atlas C
120k: Madcat B*/ Novacat C/ Beatstick
140k: no change* or mk2 B

A few things to note...there aren't any LRM bearing mechs in my selections since I don't use them. Also, which mech I choose at a given rank is very dependant on the map and how my opponents are playing. Lastly, while this list includes mechs that I may use, of them there are ones that I use all the time, ones that I use sometimes, and ones that I use hardly ever. Were I to distill this list to which mech I use at which rank 80% of the time, that selection is marked with an asterisk.
