Let's play Dwarf Fortress - Lardbones
« on: September 10, 2010, 03:53:40 AM »
I've started an epic, Boatmurdered style succession game. If you haven't read Boatmurdered but you're interested anyway (what are you, a blind insipid cretin living under a rock?) a succession game is when a bunch of people take turns managing a single fortress by passing the save around.

RULES AND STUFF:
 • Each turn lasts one in-game year. As soon as the "Spring has arrived!" text appears at the bottom, save and upload it to Mediafire.
 • If someone starts a huge megaproject and it isn't really stupid, either work on it or leave it alone.
 • Chronicle the events of the fortress with posts in this thread, preferably with screenshots.
 • At the start of your turn, pick a dwarf in the fortress, promote it to expedition leader, and give it a nickname. This is you. Please don't mess around with other people's avatars, berserk moods and/or impending fortress doom looming anyway notwithstanding. RPing as this dwarf in your status update posts is optional but fun (as evidenced by Boatmurdered). Additionally, if you don't bother to make living quarters at least as good as yours for the next leader in line he has every right to take yours, tombs notwithstanding. After you pick your dwarf make sure you change the last player's avatar's profession to "Former Ruler" if he hasn't already done so.
 • If you choose to post in-character as your dwarf, feel free to add non-RP notes. Specify them with ((Double parenthesis like these)).
 • If the fortress becomes unplayable or just flat-out dies off in a very non-epic way (again, see Boatmurdered) the current despot leader forfeits their turn and the next person in line loads the save they started with. Same goes if we can assume you're stopped playing (taking forever to finish your turn, not updating at all).
 • Dwarven Atom Smashers are kinda cheating, don't use them on creatures. Feel free to use one as a method of garbage disposal however. Cave-in traps are allowed, because they require a decent amount of effort and they're very dwarfy.

If you're interested in joining post here, and you'll be placed at the bottom of the roster in the 2nd post.

STRIKE THE EARTH!

Is it possible for us to play together even tough we all use different tilesets and stuff?

If thats no problem, count me in  ;D

Tile-/Graphics-sets shouldn't be a problem as long as we're all using the same unmodded version of DF ;)

EDIT:
...and by unmodded I'm talking about changed values for animals and stuff like that although some might call Tilesets mods.

If you're using a full-on graphics mod like this one:

see this post for details on how to fix what will be broken graphics when your turn comes.

Hmm, I'm using that graphics-mod, but I guess I can install DF a second time in a different directory without that mod enabled.

As long as you're not using a full-on graphics mod like this one:
*picture*

OH SNAP. I'm screwed.... wait, I've got both eyestrain and brainstrain versoin, its fine  ;)

everything will be fine. (YAY!)  Even so, all it means is that some of the tiles will look wrong, my friend using this graphics mod said that in my saves the dwarves looked weird whereas his saves in my game had terrain that looked like random characters.

bold above

I got my graphics version "installed" in a seperate space, is this alright?

you can *probably* count me in (unless something bad happens, or my computer burns out, or something  :o... or my mom gets pissed off...  ::)), but I'm hoping that a turn would be... a max of 1 month (1-2 weeks, decidable by the guy doing it, seems nice)

I'd like to have a "roles" thing in here, who does what (1st person does initial structure, which means very good layout, 2nd sets up army/defense, etc.) which would guide out fortress to SUCCESS!
Are we here yet?

Dwarf Fortress: The weak shall be culled, so the strong can have nicer socks.

I killed stuff with Sparrowhawks in 0.3.2

Here's one. The levers to control it are next to the dining room. Which does what is marked with (N)otes. I'll leave it as a surprise, though you can probably guess. ;)

I forgot to mention, each person's turn lasts an in-game year. I'll update the first post.

One thing I did when I played a succession game with my RL friends was to make a list of recommendations for the next person's turn at the end of mine.

The dwarfs look fine, but some ore tiles are using the cheese/bat images

Playable, but might be confusing.

It works great, but it seems like it also destroys the fortress' only watersupply, which is unfortunate :>
And why is your refuse pile inside? When I unpaused, there suddenly was a big cloud of miasma spreading through that level^^'

I wouldn't go as far as handing out certain roles, recommendations (that might be ignored ;D ) should be enough, after all a fortress that is spiraling out of control is "FUN"!! :P

Btw, I've already got an idea for a somewhat useful although massively time consuming mega project ;D

I have a dwarven atomsmasher for getting rid of refuse. Dwarves going outside to throw away rotten dog skin leads to dwarves getting murdered by goblin ambushes.

I just put my pile "outside" in walls, or even on the "top" of the mountain with removed slopes. Same with outdoor gardens. Haven't fought yet, whoever is before me PUT UP THOSE TRAPS!!!

Oh, and moat sounds fun to me  ;)
