Unless you have an actual tile set, in which a goblin looks like a goblin and an elephant looks like an elephant  :P
"Mr. Churchill, you're drunk!"
"Indeed I am, madam. And you're ugly. The difference is in the morning I will be sober. You, however, will still be ugly."

Srs guys, can we keep the chat not concerning the succession game to the other thread? Eventually I might compile this somewhere and I'd rather not dig through pages of "I ned help plez" posts.

Can we suggest rules and other stuff?

Like, no atom smashing goblins/monkeys/cougars/whatever with bridges allowed?
No locking dwarfs into a room with lever activated training-spear-traps to get High Masters or better in defensive skills 2 seasons?
Never arm once what you could arm twice.

In Lyran Commonwealth, Atlas scouts you.

Feel free to do so. I use atom smashers to get rid of garbage, personally, and never as weapons. I'd rather allow danger rooms for training though, since personal combat training is next to useless and relying on RNG to give you a trained soldier to teach the rest of your military sucks. Besides, getting conquered by gobbos is no fun. Watching a tantrum spiral happen after your legendary axedwarf goes berserk is fun.

I've started the fortress and updated the first post. Here's some background about the world. It's a medium region called Gatalkar, which evidently means "The Ageless Dimensions". A map is spoilered below for size. I've embarked to a place where a dry broadleaf forest meets the side of a mountain, with a brook running east to west through it. Look for the cyan-colored (mirthful) patch of hills in the south of the region, there should be a river running to the ocean just below it. This is the river I embarked near. It's warm, and a good portion of it is heavily forested. There are quite a few pools scattered about, and a small herd of elephants can be seen off to the north. Next post will be in character as the expedition leader.

1st Granite, 1051, Early Spring

Our trek to this little hill in the middle of nowhere ended today. This is the place we were told to start a trading outpost, Armok knows why. It's a promising area from the looks of it, though the elephants wandering around to the north concern me. I'll have to get our masons to work setting up traps for them as soon as they're done making some basic furniture for us.

On the issue of naming, we decided on "Lardbones." It came out of this hilarious joke that Vucar told the other night when we were gathering 'round our campfire after settling down following a day's travel, and I don't care to tell the whole story here. Likot wanted a more serious name, but since we're probably not going to be much more than an unimportant little backwater trading post I really couldn't give a marmot's tail.

28th Slate, 1051, Mid-Spring

It's been almost two months since we came here, and we've just about finished carving out some basic facilities. I've sketched diagrams of them all below. We've got a small space for workshops and storage (1), a kitchen and larder (2), an as-yet unfurnished dining hall (3), and some bedrooms (4). The miners gave me dirty looks when I told them how big to make my chambers (5), but leadership is hard work. Surely they can understand that...

We still have to set up an irrigation system to get a farm going, but if the need arises we can slaughter our now-useless muskox and horse. They don't have a wagon to pull anymore. Since my skills are pretty much entirely managerial and there's not much managing to be done, I've taken to smoothing the walls. Rough stone is hard on the eyes and hard on the skin. As soon as the irrigation system is completed, I'm going to set the masons to work on a defensive wall. We won't need it for a long time, in all likelihood, but better to get it out of the way sooner.

It's been almost two months since we came here, and we've just about finished carving out some basic facilities. I've sketched diagrams of them all below. We've got a small space for workshops and storage (1), a kitchen and larder nice (2), an as-yet unfurnished dining hall where is it in relation to the kitchen? what floor? the looks is nice... (3), and some bedrooms make 'em all with king-size beds, please, I'm lazy  ;)(4). The miners gave me dirty looks when I told them how big to make my chambers lollage (5), but leadership is hard work. Surely they can understand that...

*picture*

We still have to set up an irrigation system to get a farm going, but if the need arises we can slaughter our now-useless muskox and horse. Keep all the animals in a "pen" (farm) and let them run inside and not adopt anyone. Then they can breed (cats, leave only 2 outside, and leave 2 dogs also They don't have a wagon to pull anymore. Since my skills are pretty much entirely managerial and there's not much managing to be done, I've taken to smoothing the walls. Make some graffiti, Rough stone is hard on the eyes and hard on the skin. As soon as the irrigation system is completed oh how do you do that btw? could you please have both an inside and outside, (walled in) farm too? that way you can make stuff like strawberry wine, I'm going to set the masons to work on a defensive wall. We won't need it for a long time yeah  ::) right, eleohants, in all likelihood, but better to get it out of the way sooner.
Are we here yet?
