Beta Release - Astonishing - & Aero Combat
« on: September 11, 2010, 08:08:47 AM »
This was what the beta was supposed to look like... That's why I was so disappointed when I first played it.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qEDpGgaoDeU

I mean, just look at those lasers and explosions.
That's the game I want to play!
It makes me think of mechwarrior 2 and lots of google cash from advertising.
Right now we're being too conservative and star trek styled.

Clarification Highlights from the thread:

You have to admit the faults of the mod (A2A, missles vs air, bad mech variants, ect) but by admitting them you can change them to something that works better.

Obviously, like some said, the only things that are cool in the video are some extra explosions, sound effects and the epic lasers.
And that's what I meant as well.
Now imagine those 3 effects in the current release.
Simple but breathtaking!

I agree. This mod has no character. were firing flashlights. everything is a flashlight. nothing feels like a deadly weapon.

That was an epic video... More epic than the MWLL beta 0.1 actually.

I have to disagree with the devs. Star wars lasers ARE cool.

Are there any technical or balance reasons that all lasers need to be a flashlight? You could just keep beam lasers that way, then make pulse lasers into a star wars type. Best of both worlds right there.

So... this looks really similar to what we have... perhaps you can be more specific on what is different?

The energy weapons in the video have so much impact!
But when I play this version of the game, I don't use lasers because it just doesn't have the feel.
Do you understand me my friend?

Play the AIX or Project Reality mods for bf2. weapons sound carries. the mod should be LOUD with all the massive caliber weps we are firing. Right now only gauss rifes do anything and even then often not. You should be tossed around just from the inertia of the things fired at you. right now, it feels like were firing airsoft pellets at each other.

give this mod something to set it apart from the other fps's out there. Thats far more important than more mechs or maps.

Edit, previous A2A combat looked better too.

i somewhat approve of instant lasers, but at least give them a much larger dispersion like the heads in the lasers in that video. maybe just very fast velocity instead of instant.

Exactly! Just by looking at both videos!
It's a burden to think of all this while working hard like they do!
I understand them!

Good things like that should never be forgotten.
That was the intense action and feel I was impatient to try 2 years ago when I first saw that video.

No one is making you stick around....

Starwars style lasers are never coming back, not to mention they look pretty retarded. As for the particle effects, they are all crysis ones. Crysis particle effects are EXTREMELY performance intensive, sure we can use all stock crysis stuff but then you will be playing with 10 fps on any comp that cost less then $10,000 and your soul. There is ALOT more going on behind the scenes then you can even comprehend. If hardware wasn't an issue we would have photo realistic games that hook into your brain and are controlled by your thoughts, but we don't....

Instead of saying our game looks like crap your can either...

B) STFU
C) Learn to make games yourself and help

err... try running the game on a system with decent hardware for graphics and sound and then say that again... lol ( I mean max everything, then tell me its like firing flashlights and there are no deadly weapons ) I personally really like the weapon's effects. They dont get in the way too much, but feel how you expect it too based on the technology of the weapons.

I actually feel insulted myself by these comments and I'm not even a developer of the mod. It's so obvious the amount of work a system does playing this mod, completely aside from anything graphical or sound oriented. When you take into account the amount of detail in the system, graphically, it still amazes me sometimes that the whole thing doesnt crawl on supercomputers. It's also just as obvious the amount of work that has gone into making the mod what it is today, we should be careful not to devalue that work, or to insult the people responsible for it.

So you think the beta release should have looked like mocked together pre-alpha footage.... ok not sure how to answer that. What exactly in there are you talking about? Star wars style lasers? Other than that we delivered on everything in there and more. I really have no idea what this post is even complaining about. This is not an FPS, its not a one hit and the enemy blows up affair, it never was and never will be. Also knocking your targets around with every weapon is a great way to piss everyone off. We've been riding that edge as it is.

I'd also like to note that this is in fact a beta that you're playing, and you haven't the foggiest idea of what has been going on behind the scenes between each and every release, from that first video to our beta teaser, to each and every patch and hotfix. There are a lot of people working as much as they can - considering no one is paying them - to make this mod the best it can be. Constructive criticism is, of course welcome. If you've read through these forums at all, or utilized the very handy search function, you'll find that all the concerns I see stated have been addressed in some form or another; if you have a gripe about a particular issue that you feel isn't being addressed, you are welcome to acquire the skills and experience necessary to help fix it and apply to join the team. Otherwise, we can but do the best we can with what resources we have available, and while the dev team, I'm sure, would like to release updates more often, such things take time and testing and time and testing and testing and testing and balancing and testing, i.e., a lot of time, sometimes.

O woe, o woe, with much wailing and gnashing of teeth, it is unfortunate that the MW/CBT IP is split up so badly. However it is what it is, and the only way you were going to get a real MW game any time soon was for someone to make a royalty-and-reward-free version. This team is the one that had enough skill and talent to make this mod happen, and maybe, just maybe, had something to do with S&T deciding to try to make MW5, but that is still irrelevant. It sucks, but no one gets paid for the time spent working on this FREE game, and all of us have to eat and pay bills (electricity and internet are useful, I find), leading to other priorities sometimes. So unless you are, or otherwise know, a really excellent copyright/IP lawyer and/or an incredibly wealthy venture capitalist, who can somehow finagle a way for the Dev team to get paid a salary to make this game... how much more can you ask from these people and a mod that is very clearly a beta.

Also, I like pie.

Though I agree that star wars style lasers do not belong here, and the game is great as is, there are two things I liked about the A2A video.
1. when hit the plane get's knocked by the impact, would be nice if some weapons could still do this to planes
2. the flight physics in the vid are probably a very early state of development, but feel much more realistic and believable than the current IMO.
the current flight physics aren't bad , but dogfights always look pretty stupid with them, and it seems the physics in the vid worked better... ???

On the other hand, if you don't like the game as is, don't play it! :P
If at first you don't succeed try again, and if you don't try again, you'll be hit in the face with a shovel!

Yay vids of no textured vehicles flying around with dodgey physics and cruddy looking star wars lasers.

I'm glad to be playing the mod we play today, than oogling at old video's pointlessly.

And the current physiscs are less dodgy than the physics in the vid?

I have the feeling if someone made a video using epic music and used the current mod the exact same reactions could be reproduced. Come on ppl, think of this as a commercial, it is making it look better than it was. It was made to get people excited for the mod so of course it is going to look great.

I just cant figure out this community....
