Animated Gifs for Weapon Pages
« on: September 22, 2010, 05:39:03 AM »
Hey all, I just finished updating the individual BA weapon pages to have animated gifs to demonstrate how the weapons work, and just wanted a little feedback.

MPPPC
Bear AC
AC2
SBL
MHL
Flamer
TAG Laser

1). How do you like them?
2). How does it load/perform for you?
3). Should they be smaller/bigger/removed?
4). Would you like to see more animated gifs for other weapons pages?
Played MWLL for Guillermo del Toro.

First off let me say one word. Scrumtrilescent.  The camera work is out of this world.  I really liked the TAG one. You owned those noobs!

Who was your editor? His work reminds of Jurassic Park... maybe The Matrix.

Make more! Maybe some of mechs walking.

 Looking good, like it.

Interesting...
They appear much slower on this computer then at my station back home.

Did you rework them between yesterday and today?
I shall have to try when I get back home again and see if they are "fast" again.

/Merf - Is thinking this could be an issue if they end up going too fast or too slow

Cool, looks great.
Only thing I would like to see different is the flamer. I like the third person view, but it would look even better if the flamer guy would spray around a bit. This is so static, makes the flamer look less fantastic.

Wow nice. I would put the focus more on the weapon itself though if you can cut out the scene a bit. Maybe mixed with Shooting, being shot at ? :D That would also allow to make the image smaller.

2 Cents, other than that I love it!

These looks great.  Load times are about four or five seconds and, like most Gifs, run crisp and smooth after cycling through it once.

It's my personal preference that the Flamer and the TAG are done best, since it's an external view of the Battle Armor, but that's entirely personal preference.  It helps display the limited range of Battle Armor weaponry.

My only suggestion may be for the AC2 that you had.  The single shots are great to display the way the weapon works, but maybe you could edit it to be two single shots, then a few seconds to sustained fire to illustrate the massive recoil of the weapon if the trigger is held down?

Nice work with the animations but I have one thing I want to mention, why are you shooting the Bear AC  at the ground so far away where it does no damage at all to ba's. The weapon only has a 55m range, anything further away than that takes 0 damage even though it still shows it like the bullets are actually hitting the target which they don't.
Just though that real range for the Bear AC could be misunderstood.

Btw I really hope they improve the range of the Bear AC due to the fact that its range is so short that it turns the meanest anti ba gun into something more or less useless, not to mention how silly it is that a flamer have almost twice the range of a minigun.

No, they should be exactly the same.  If people have some performance issues, I might have to scale it down a bit more/reduce the quality a bit.

Yeah, the flamer one could be redone to be more "active"; a little motion would probably help.

Do you think I should run more of a 3rd person close up instead of the first person shot?  Also, I did most of these by myself, but I'd love to rework them with more people involved in order to get more "action" shots.  The only thing is that I'm worried about it moving from a demonstration of the weapon to an action clip, but I guess these could ultimately be the same thing.

My only suggestion may be for the AC2 that you had.  The single shots are great to display the way the weapon works, but maybe you could edit it to be two single shots, then a few seconds to sustained fire to illustrate the massive recoil of the weapon if the trigger is held down?

Actually, it's supposed to be firing in 2 shot bursts, both to demonstrate the initial accuracy of the first shot, as well as the ridiculous recoil on the second.  Unfortunately, when I cut out frames to make the gif a manageable size, I lost some of important frames; I'll probably end up reworking this one too.

I get what you're saying, but I just wanted to show the properties of the weapons rather than how to use them most effectively.  It's true the the Bear's effective range is much shorter than I show, but mostly I wanted to demonstrate the windup time and the full auto nature of the weapon, as well as things like it's cone of fire, bullet speed, and accuracy.  Since the range values are right below in the table, I didn't feel it necessary to restrict the image to a set range, but you're correct in saying it may cause some misunderstandings.  Food for thought....

Thanks for all the feedback guys, I'll get back to reworking them later on this week/weekend.  Couple more things:

1). Would you like to see more of these in other areas of the wiki?
2). Do you think the current size is appropriate?

Looks great, I'd like to see more in the style of the TAG one though, i.e. seeing them in action and from the point of view of a spectator.

The TAG one looks like he's peeing a laser at an enemy :D
