Virtual Tabletop games
« on: October 14, 2010, 04:27:04 AM »
Hey guys, before I begin, if you have not checked out MegaMek, over at sourceforge. http://megamek.sourceforge.net/ get it for free here. It's the Classic Battletech game in its glorious entirety so please by all means check it out, invite your friends and do battle the way it was meant to be!

Now for the question of the thread, are there other games out there like this? Essentially, have other Tabletop games made it to the virtual environment. I <3 boardgames and love getting together with friends to play 'em, but that's hard to do when your BT friends are out in other states, or as far away as New Zealand or Sweeden. So what virtual alternatives do you know of?

Yeah, love that thing. A little glitchy and not really user-friendly, but still awesome.

Yeah, the quirks are not too hard to get, and unless you got a ton of bt friends nearby, its the best way to play cbt.

BAH, 3025 ftw.

Anyways, Megamek is great. I have been looking for other games that came from tabletop, but they are few and far between.

Well, I will report my findings here as well. Perhaps we can assist one another in the quest for decent gaming.

There is Battlemech 3D which tried to put CBT into a 3D environment with animations and an easy-to-learn interface. It was fun, although it's buggy, prone to crashing and looks kinda cheesy most of the time :) It's far from complete aswell.
Development stopped some years ago, but the source code is floating around my harddrive somewhere, aswell as the latest version.
Some screenshots can be found here (German, sorry) but the official site is dead. If anyone's interested I can upload it.

Huh. I'd be interested in trying that. Can't see the screens though, on a school computer at the moment. :(

It really buggy :X Some 'mech will not show up on the map while some 'mech use a different model to display it in game. And sometimes the turn-based battle can cause the game to go into an infinite loop.

Cant help you there.

I am also looking for Crimson Skies. That was a great tabletop game, and should have been darn easy to do in java or something

You could almost simply mod the Aerotech portion of Megamek to do it for A t A battles
