Woah, possible worse then microsoft?

Activision plans to distribute feature-length videogame cinematics.

Boss-man Bobby Kotick made the prediction while discussing StarCraft II's hour-long pre-rendered cut-scenes at the Bank of America Merrill Lynch's Media, Communications & Entertainment Conference in California.

"If we were to take that hour, or hour and a half, take it out of the game, and we were to go to our audiences - for whom we have their credit card information and a direct relationship - and say to them, 'Would you like to have the StarCraft movie?'... and say we have this great hour and a half of linear video that we'd like to make available to you at a $30 or $20 price point, you'd have the biggest opening weekend of any film ever," Kotick said.

"Within the next five years you are likely to see us do that... There will be a time when we capitalise on the relationship that we have with our audience and deliver them something that is really extraordinary and let them consume it directly through us instead of through theatrical distribution."

lol, they make us pay for Map packs, now they are going to make us pay for this...

Yeah, EA has stepped down from the Publishing Evil Empire throne, and Activision filled the void. ::)

I dunno.  That is something I hear a lot of players, especially from Blizzard games, wanting.  Granted the majority want actual feature length movies.  Not patched together cutscenes of high end CGI.  So if they do it right, great. If the do it wrong (i.e. just steal all the opening + cut scenes +ending and patch them together) then they are evilish.

old news. but a small percentage of player world wide will buy it just to have it.  I would have preferred they release a single player only version of SC2 at a lower price point.  They would have sold a lot more.

I doubt that they'd sell more (you certainly are selling yourself short in terms of actual received content versus price).  The real gem in buying SC2 is the custom multiplayer maps.  The amount of and variation of games available is a steal compared to the one-time $60 fee.

If its a feature length movie I don't see why not. People paid to see Final Fantasy The Spirits Within. I think Activision Blizzard is much better at animating cinematics then SquareEnix is. They've been at it quite a bit longer too.

Watching this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rgyL08nhtkw makes me wonder if its for a game or a movie. Its obviously animated, but the presentation is that of a movie trailer.

I don't know about a 20-30 dollar price tag. I would rather see them go to the big screen with them. It would be something that could throw the Japanese Anime a curve-ball and reduce their foothold in the animation industry.

Err... Not everyone likes multiplayer, you know. Some people just wants to see the continuation of the original SC story. With that in mind, selling a separate "campain-only" SC2 for a half price could really be good for both Bliz and players.

I just don't see the appeal of StarCraft. The story is an ass sandwich and its got the most repetitive gameplay... Oh blizzard if only we could have learned your marketing prowess.

I'm not a huge Starcraft fan as well, but there is no denying it's remarkable popularity (Most of which is centered around multiplayer scene).  If Activision packaged just the campaign for fans of the story my guess is you'd see a lot of complaints that they were just trying to maximize profit i.e. Taking the CGI and selling it.

I just hope if they do this, other company's don't adopt it. I do not want to be paying $30 to find out the ending of Crysis 2...Or to mess up Force Unleashed 2 if it did happen to it. -_-, only 'cool' company i see these days is Valve.
