Small Wishes for the Marketing
« on: November 01, 2010, 09:57:23 PM »
#01#
In the Days of End 2009, 27th Dez 2009 and the beginnings of 2010, the community vote MWLL to "Mod of the year 2009, players choice".
The "Mod of the year 2009 editors choice" followed by the editor.
There is no way (?) to find that Awards at the MWLL-Pages.
We need it, to involve more new Players – and possible get attention by Trade Press.
Wishes for the marketing #01#:
Integration of both awards at the MWLL Homepage, at a high level.

#02#
Pics from 2009 or 2009 are not up to date. Sorry to say: that’s real old and embarrassing.
They should be delated or moved in an own section.
Wishes for the marketing #02#:
Delate (or move) every old picture at the Gallery.

#03#
For nearly all of the Levels, are no actuall (…and real…) Pictures aviable at the Gallery.
Wishes for the marketing #03#:
Integration Levelpictures, all of them dated in 2010.
(Possibility to integrate the Community via Voting / or send in)

#04#
Hopefully, there will be a 2010 Voting for “Mod of the year 2010”.
In 2010 it could be not so easy to win the Vote, because of less Activation ability. Hopefully not!
To ensure that, it could be a god way (I am not sure about that!), to collect –optional- eMails from visitors (may be, during the proezess to get the download link for 0.4.x). For example as an optional sign in for a 4-time-a-year newsletter.
Wishes for the marketing #04#
Check the possibilties for optional distribution channels, for mass activating the community.

A few words at this point.
Please do not feel attac. I am heavy impressed from the Devs, AND the community!
But I am not able to support on the technical Side. I can only support at the marketing (…did my way in real…).
=> If the community can do something, let us know.

Actually MWLL got a LOT of mainstream press attention, including a pretty big (relatively) spot in PC Gamer.

The problem is the mod was WOEFULLY beta at that point, and.... well honestly most people don't give a shit about Crysis multiplayer enough to bother with the mod.

Irrelevant poll is irrelevant?

I saw no suggestion of activities, oddly enough.

I guess my big question is, WHY? Why do we need to market the game? We all know the current activity level is low because everyone, and I mean EVERYONE is waiting on the update.

The devs know what they are doing. They will promote the mod their own way. If you wanna help, get out fraps and make a neat video or something.

yep. a way. a good way. (and actual testing it). And then? The main part is, to increase the Youtube Rank number (e.g.) 1.847.321  ;)
Press Attention is a good thing, but normally does not fallen from heaven.
In a short, but good, conversation with a responsible person of a German Top online portal (top means top [1, 10 or 100]),
I am stumbled the first time at the 2008/2009 pictures. More precisely: about no current (lovely ;-) Map-Pictures.
Which knowledge is that? Do nothing, or think in the Forum about an EASY solution?
In an second step, there could be a discussion about activate the local Community's.  :)

To be open and honest: Because of the German Discusion about violence in computer games, there is expected no reporting in THAT portal.

Believe me, there is plenty of Buzz about MW:LL... Plenty of Devs have been snapped up from the project by Corps...  There are almost 10,000 Forum members alone that happened upon MW:LL either by a Search or by word of mouth. When the modding is wrapped up, I believe and I could be wrong, that the place will explode. Most of us can think back a year to 09 and at that time we were still being teased with "We don't have a set release date." On the day of release there were over 400 people logged into the forums at one time. That is JUST the forums. Since distribution was done mainly on torrent, many didn't even log in to the forums. I think the product speaks for itself. Not to mention that all Mech leagues are watching MW:LL to see what becomes of it. And when/if MW5 releases... MW:LL will be the bar that Smith and Tinker will have to surpass, otherwise, it will be grim indeed for them. When someone else can produce a product off of your IP better than you can... and at no cost, your screwed.

Well I do hope all these people you talk about lessergod make a showing in 0.4, because otherwise MWLL is gonna have a really quiet future.

What I don't get is:
Here we got almost 10,000 people logged ... but on MWLL-servers there are 30 ~ 40 players max.
So 40 players are enjoying MWLL almost daily (mostly the same names) but what about the leftovers?

I can't imagine why there is such a huge gap. Sure some people are too busy, others don't have
enough system resources to play and so on, but ... not even 100 players seem to like MWLL so much
that they play regularly?

Therefore I voted for more activities. Maybe I will make some movies, maybe I upgrade my car with
one nice MWLL-Vinyl and drive around the planet ... Damn, I wouldn't even hesitate to go out on some
awful castingshows just to say: >>Play MWLL!<< ...

The low player count is simply because it is beta. Most people find something that is terribly bothering them (LT) and say oh well its a beta and quit playing. They all come back when the update arrives, servers are mostly full then. When 1.0 comes out i guarantee you it will get big media coverage and a much wider player base then it has now.

Not to mention the move to Wars. It has almost double server and player count compared to vanilla crysis, so i think we will be seeing many of those players as well.

Right now we're in the calm before the storm, so to speak. Everyone's bored of 0.3 and waiting for the next release. After 0.4 drops I'd expect to see three or four full servers at any given time for a few weeks. There's always a surge of activity around a patch.

Yes. I expect another boost in players with the new patch. With now 5 repeases so far we have always seen the same development in player activity. It will be interestin to see how many will stick around when we finally remove that beta flag ;)

I think it will be quite busy for quite some time once it looses the beta tags. For now, we are all kind of worn out of the TDM repetitiveness, If in fact the leagues do adopt this, then MW:LL will enjoy a loooooooonnnngggg stay. I think that will be key though: Getting the leagues on board.

I'm quite excited for 0.4.0 for the Wars piece just because some of our regular servers will be able to put up some of our fantastic user map to help vary the experience.

As it can already be noticed in posts of new players, they already got Crysis Wars and are just waiting for the start. Indeed it's the calm before the storm.
But seriously how can people don't play MWLL ... Even if it's in beta ... but this is my point of view ... *fan-boy-mode on*  ::)

I will add, quite truthfully that our marketing in general is quite lacking. Its not an easy thing to do for a free mod at all, but its just not something the team has right now. I think in general there isn't enough awareness of the mod or its current state. We just don't promote ourselves enough and without some more hands on deck I don't know how thats going to change any time soon.

Hi Toth,
Quote
and without some more hands on deck
The MWLL Wiki and the MWLL Actionmapper (“config Actionmap”) are great examples for the powerfull community. => use the Power of your community!

To generate 2010-Dated Pics of all of the maps (#03#), the community can and (hopefully) will help heavily the Dev’s Team.
Only start a new Poll by Dev as sender(!), giving the goal “need of meaningful pic” Map Name xyz. => and the footage should be found in the poll. Save relevant time for the Developers.

Where can we help, too?
Creating the first time article “MWLL” at www.Wikipedia.org ? You should see the german one, 4-6 weeks after win the “Mod 2010”. Can nail me on wall [or clearcut 8)], if not written. Need Donate for pay bandwhide downloading 0.4.0 ? Post, if needed. Need countrywide postal/eMail addresses of Gamer Magazines for Dev Press Information? Post, if needed. Looking for an professional media-/presswriter? Post, if needed  (at this point with no guarantee, because of the rarely species ;))

The examples above have the same mechanism: precise requiremen, share know how AND TIME of all of the potentially helping hands.

There is a real big potential.

Post Scriptum: Where we are just so beautiful here :)
#05# Hopefully a lot new player will get the MWLL via Torrent.
They normally do not look at the (for them unknown) MWLL-Pages. But all of them use the MWLL-launcher.
Possibilities for the marketing #05#
Extention of the Launcher for a new sector “MWLL at the Net”.
Including 4 Buttons. 1.Donate 2.Wiki 3.Forum 4. Homepage
(no risk, no negative effects, no costs, can be only positive => lovely)

Looking foreward for interesting reaction.
