Black Ops...
« on: November 12, 2010, 12:48:41 AM »
I have only played the campaign so far (and am not quite finished with it), but thus far, I am pretty disappointed.  I buy games like this for the guns...and I swear, every time I get something nice (like the HK G3 with the 50 round drum, bipod forearm, and 1200 meter sight), I have it for a few moments before some random cutscene happens, and I am running for my life with a @*$&*&# 1911.  Then I am stuck with yet another M4/M16 variant.  Then, right after I manage to acquire a decent weapon, BAM!  Another random cutscene costs me my new quasi-decent weapon.  Mission over.

Next mission...you start out with GUESS WHAT?!  HOLY CRAP, ANOTHER M4/M16 VARIANT!  Who would have guessed?  Then I manage to acquire an HK PSG1 *angel choir, please*.  Problem: it sounds like someone stubbing their toe on a cabinet when you fire it.  Seriously, the sniper rifle sounds in this game are ridiculously bad.  On top of this, the only mission in which you can acquire a PSG1 is a CITY MAP with CLOSE RANGE FIGHTING.  Thanks, Treyarch.

Can someone who has played the multiplayer please try to assuage my fears that I just threw 60 dollars down the toilet?  And no, I do not care about fighting off hordes of zombified Nazis, top-down shooters, or playing Left for Dead 2 with JFK, Macnamera, Tricky Dick, and Castro in the Pentagon.

Just the fact they used the name 'Black Ops' told me it would be a stinker...sorry bout your 60bucks, maybe you can sell it to some poor sap that doesn't know any better, or likes M16s a lot.

I suck!! But WE are AWESOME.  We started a unit.  What's that?!  YOU WANNA TOUCH MY UNIT?!! :P ^^12thVR Recruitment Page(clickthepic) ;)

Well, I liked Modern Warfare (the first one...never bought the second).  The inclusion of the G3 helped this alot, since I consider it to be one of the finest battlefield implements ever created, but I still liked its single player.  There are also some neat firefights in Black Ops, but it seems like you get all the cool/nice/interesting weapons in places you either cannot use them, or cannot hang on to them.  Overall, I had a lot more fun with Bad Company 2...but I guess I will hold out a little hope that multiplayer will not be the horrid, steaming turd that the single player experience is.

you don't buy call of duty for the single player nowadays, its for the hefty multiplayer. I've been enjoying the MP the last few days, but I only play on hardcore servers because I prefer not to need to use an entire clip to kill someone
Play my free open source web game MiniMek - Urbie Defense!  Its "mega fun" but with mini meks!

+1, thought it would be one more thread about stealth in MWLL.

Well, campaign is finished...the multiplayer is pretty fun, and has a nice feel to it overall, but the campaign finishes on a pretty damned cheesy note.

As a side note, Robert Picardo and Gary Oldman do some voice talent for this game, which is flat-out awesome.  8)

Just finished my second play-through...

  • Same ol' CoD action, even more linear than ever.
  • Average story, but high production values all around make it engrossing the first time around.  Very little replayability of the SP campaign.
  • The scripted action sequences are a collection of deja vu moments from other recent FPS games.
  • Zombie mode is harder, making getting past level 15 nigh impossible outside of Co-Op play.

Since there's no Demo, I "acquired" a copy to check out the SP and I can't say I'm impressed, far from it actually.
The CoDitis is even stronger in this one, with wave after wave of enemies until you pass some invisible checkpoint, useless AI companions that really like to just run past some enemies, which doesn't matter to them, since they're invulnerable and the enemies are mostly just shooting at the player anyways, grenades that have a tiny area of effect, unless they're used against the player, unskippable in-game cutscenes etc.
Oh and the graphics, are those supposed to look good? Even on the highest settings, the textures are horrid, with the exception of some important characters and weapons, in some places it seems as though the developers never heard of bump and displacement maps :o
Can't say much about the story, I'm not far in and until now it doesn't make alot of sense...
Since I'm guessing that MP is pretty much the same deal as Cod4+5+4.5, I won't be spending 60€ on this.
Even less so, since apparently all germans are considered under the age of 18 and can therefore only buy a massively censored version, with no english voices to boot.

Thank you for making my choice this easy Activision.

On a side note, the level of censorship in Germany is ridiculous. Thankfully whining about video game violence in America is mostly restricted to over-protective mothers and religious nuts.

You know what REALLY looked bad?  That cutscene where you get the ride to the Pentagon.  That looked so bad, it seemed like it was from an N64 game or something.  I mean, cutscenes are supposed to look BETTER than the actual gameplay, are they not?  :-\

I generally agree with the consensus that the game is not worth the plastic it was wrapped in, but that video is a whole different ball of trash. There is a difference between flaws and just nitpicking crap. That was nitpicking. Its a bunch of crap. Hurp derp derp.
