MWLL short stories.
« on: November 13, 2010, 06:05:14 AM »
After reading this short by Trooper_Thorn, I've got an idea: with such talented writers like Trooper_Thorn, MatthewPride and many others in our community, I think it would be good to have a short background story written for each MWLL map(and maybe some general events of the times when MWLL is taking place) to add some depth to MWLL events. Those stories could be placed into the MWLL manual(as soon as it would be ready) and MWLL Wiki. Devs just have to provide writers with some basic info for each map, like place, time, general course of events and forces involved. Hell, we could even held a writing contest so that devs could pick the stories they would like best. So, people, what do you think?

I was thinking about doing some short stories to encompass the changes in 040.  Whether they're battle journals or just tourist ads.  More for myself than anything, I want to try more creative writing

Nice idea Silk. We could even go further and write short stories about the units we founded (or clans that are existant anyhow) and maybe even cowork on this so that we could have some short stories about conflicts.

For example: Some weeks ago me and my fellow dCKs were just joining Huntress as we (and the SJs) came up with the thought to turn it into a clan vs clan match. The server was reseted and set to TOS settings and the conditions of our "trial" were negotiated. What followed was a really epic match. After like 20mins I hit TAB for the first time and saw that the entire enemy team consisted of SJs (like 9 or 10 of them!) and that we (3 or 4 dCKs + 6 or 7 casual players) were actually doing well against them. We could even go as far as to write a little story about this (à la: dCK as an actual combat unit fighting the Clan with assistance of some random partisans etc.).

+1 Karma for you Silk.

Yeah, that's what I had in mind: some RP background to make MWLL more that just a mindless multiplayer mecha battle. BT was always boasting detailed lore and thrilling novels so making same for MWLL only seems natural to me.

Sounds like a good idea, I'm not anywhere near good enough at writing to justify contributing. :P

My fellow teammates and I have already talked about this subject, We are well known for our RP in NBT. We have decided to write for MWll starting over with our original return from exile (Self imposed) and our New Leadership and Surkai with Clan Star Adder. We have five of us that write RP and each has a different style and point of view. Our Khan Gremlich Johns, saKhan Jahziel, Loremaster Ryu , myself and finally Star Commander Sparky. I had already started a thread I have just not posted yet because the RP has to be recovered and adjusted to MWLL. Our primary question is that during this timeline CSJ (Clan Smoke Jaguar) has been taken out by IS attack and we have them as rediscovered remnants trying to rebuild their Clan and being accepted back into Clan Council as a full fledged Clan again with them retaking Huntress by Trial of Possession. Is this a direction y'all would like to take or do Y'all want the IS attack to have not happened and CSJ to be as it was before the attack. We need to know this so we can adjust our characters to fit what MWll wants this to represent.

I'll get us started...

The tension amongst the pilots was palpable.   Some shuffled from foot to foot, disconnected coolant lines rapping their vests like distant machine gun fire.   Others stood at the Ready Room window, continuing their long vigil though narrow eyes, scanning  the empty horizon.    From time to time, some checked their Comsat terminals for the news they'd long awaited.    And with each blank screen, the tension grew.

It had been 3 months since rumours of an impending new release had begun to circulate.    And when Comsat officially disclosed the target date of October, even the most battle-hardened veterans had struggled to contain an outward show of excitement.

But as the long cold days of October had stretched into bitter weeks, and flurries of snow piled against the hangar door, disquieting undercurrents had grown.    Just as the Comsat chatter had died away, so too had the great Solaris Arenas grown ever more quiet.    As the winter grew ever darker, so too did the furrows on the pilot's brows...

To be continued.   Eventually!

:D

I foresee a potential problem with MWLL not being set at a specific time ;)

The clans are invading! No wait, the counter attack is under way! No way, Huntress is in ruins! Ah no, wait again Huntress is not destroyed yet! Oh wait, it is destroyed and SJ is fighting like remnants on whatever backwater worlds they can hold!

I am thinking that equipment aside a time period should be set. I think I read somewhere that the devs had a loose idea of it taking place during the clan invasions later half, but took the liberty to include tech from other time periods. I am wondering if maybe this loose idea is enough or if something more specific is needed.

/Merf - Sense! We must make it!

I have written an 80K word back story for the MWLL reiteration of Clan Hell's Horses using current and past members as the central characters. (it can be read on the CHH site if anyone wants to take the time) After extensive research and thought I choose 3065 as the starting point. That seemed to fit best with all the mechs and equipement that was avaialbe in MWLL when I started writing. Some time ago, I talked to SJ Amarus about Smoke Jaguars and how they fit into the MWLL world. He indicated that either SJ had reformed from the warriors that managed to escape Huntress or that in this alternate time line the invasion of Huntress never happened.

From 3065 to 3070 Clan Wolf and Clan Jade Falcon occupy a substantial portion of the Inner Shere. Clan Ghost Bear has become part of the Inner Sphere and left Clan Space entirely.Likewise Clan Nova Cat has settled in the Draconis Combine. Clan Hell's Horses is plotting its return to the Inner Sphere and revenge against the Wolves. There are lots of mercenary groups and all five of the major Houses still exist along with Comstar and the Blakest. Although this is not consider the most "classic" part of the Battletech time line it does seem to fit best with MWLL and the diversity of mechs and vehicles included therein. Plus there was a lot going on at the time with many opportunities to expand the story. I my story< I took such an event that was mentioned in BT lore but not really explored thoroughly and expanded it to give our faction of CHH a major role in the rebirth of the clan.

Just my thoughts on the appropriate time period for MWLL.

Thorn: I am very curious as to how the rite of surkai was performed. Please post the link to the thread here (once it's ready) or pm me.

I have been in contact with Gremlich and he said he is in the process of cleaning up the Surkai RP before we post fully I will contact you let you run through the RP and get your approval and suggestions. When we do RP concerning other Clans we always try to get them involved in the RP process so we do not run afoul of the direction they wish to take. After this rite of Surkai in NBT we actually ended up being one of CSA's most dependable allies and well thought of units by both Clan and IS units for our honorable actions in and out of combat operations. As for the Surkai right our Loremaster Ryu set forth the right to be done as it is in BT Lore and Canon he has every book and manual that has ever been written and we also have it all on CD Roms so each of us can check to make sure we are writing within Canon, although, in NBT we did wander a little but in the process of writing RP Ryu goes over the RP to insure following BT canon then Grem does the editing and approval for posting and as for myself I will recheck edit and some times I will find an error or two myself (spelling, punctuation or other small errors) we try our best to post well written technically and with proper grammar, for the Clans are know for using proper English with out using contractions.
