seeking answer
« on: November 18, 2007, 03:07:51 PM »
Hello, I found your board while doing a search for something unrelated to your board.  I hope you won't mind the intrusion.  I belong to another bulletin board and I occasionally like to see where guests are viewing.  I've done this for years, but recently I started seeing something I've never seen before.  It will say, "nothing, or nothing you can see, anyway."  I did a google search on it and found your site.  It showed the stats to your board and it showed about 5 people displaying that comment on the "who's online" page.  On the other board I belong to it has only ever appeared next to a guest, never for a member name.  I was surprised to see that some of your guests can display that, too.

Can anyone explain to me why that comes up and how to do it?

Thanks for any help you can give me.  I appreciate it.

This is what I'm inquiring about.  Can somebody please give me an explanation for it?  Thanks!

Members doing stuff you can't see means they're accessing non-public sections of the forum.

Thanks for your reply, AoP.  But, I'm still curious.  How are guests able to show up with that display?   Can you give me an example of why that display would show up?  Thanks again.

At first, I thought it might have something to do with a user choosing the "hidden" option on their profile, but that's not it, either.

The "Who is doing what" list in most forums doesn't support error messages. When a "Guest" (might be search engine bot) did something they're not permitted to do, they trigger an error message which is being displayed with that message in the online list.

Thanks again for your reply, AoP.  I'm not sure if your explanation is a logical guess or if you are answering knowledgeably with an official answer.  The reason I'm still questioning your answer is because that explanation seems to fit why the display "action unknown" would appear better than why the "nothing, or nothing you can see, anyway" display would appear.

I hope you will forgive my persistence, but I'd really like to know the difference between "action unknown" and "nothing, or nothing you can see, anyway," then.

Do you think the "nothing, or nothing you can see anyway" appears when someone might click on read latest post of this member from their profile?

I'm pretty familiar with this type of forum, so I understand pretty well all the buttons, features, functions, etc.  I just have not been able to figure out why those two displays sometimes appear on the "who's online" page.

Although, I do know that "unknown action" appears when someone is either deleting comments or deleting an account.  I wonder if it might appear when someone is modifying a comment.

Do you or anyone else have more precise answers to my questions?

Thanks, once again, AoP.  I'm afraid that's a bit too technical for my "simple mind," though.  I checked out the link and that kind of stuff is like Greek to me.  But, I do thank you for all your help, anyway.  I'm just looking for a more simple answer.  I honestly don't know how to understand all that technical jargon or how it would relate to my question.  But I do thank you for your assistance and I'll just keep plugging away at finding the answers to my questions.

Sorry for the intrusion on to you forum.

Have a great day!

P.S.  I forgot to add that the forum I'm most familiar with is an xsorbit bulletin board.
