Inconsistent insignia
« on: November 27, 2010, 02:35:47 AM »
The symbols for both factions are not consistent over the game. While in the hangars we have flags of Clan Wolf/ House Davion, the team selection screen has the symbol of House Steiner and some symbol I do not recognise for the Clans.

Even as a Spheroid, I'm gonna have to say, OP, that you need to change your avatar lol. You're gonna get the clanners riled up.

Well then I will have to face the consequences. But after all, the symbols do not match.

And why should Clan Wolf bear the insignias of the Star League?

 Clan Wolf insignia is this:

SLDF forces banner is used as an umbrella insigna for all the clans as a whole as they are descendants(and to some point keepers of the traditions and knowledge) of original SLDF.

"This Clan posses intelligence, the burning passion of true hunters, and a spirit that serves as a beacon to the rest. I mingle my blood with the Wolves."

As a Steiner fan and anti-FedCom I must say that I will smack you with the force of 10000 (Steiner) fists if you call the symbol of the Federated Commonwealth the "Steiner Sybol" again.  ;D

Federated Commonwealth (bad):

House Steiner (good):

In Lyran Commonwealth, Atlas scouts you.

It's because this way we don't have to bother about making certain conflicts very... nation-specific. First of all the UI doesn't know what map you play, so we couldn't display Ghost Bear insignia in team selection on Ghost Bear map or DC insignia on DC map. Secondly hangars are shared assets between all the maps (list of advantages for this is very very long) making it impossible to differ all the signs here and there between the maps. Only parts that do differ now actually are emblems/flags placed by the mapper, on the Marshes hangars to give one example.

Still, the Star League insignia is a bad choice. It could also be applied to the new Star League, which is composed of the IS fractions ::)

Yes (and as an Ex-SLDF pilot, I always find it jarring that the clanners are using the Star League symbol when the IS use it as their unifying symbol), but there is no Grand Council or Ilkahn logo/symbol or banner that I know of, so unless we want the Clans plural to be depicted as a Mad Cat outline (with the IS getting the SLDF banner) we're better sticking with what we have.  The SLDF banner is all the Devs really have available to use for the Clanners AFAIK, they could make something up (an IlKhans crest or seal or something), but that might have even more people crying.

Faction symbols are not final.  We'd like to allow players to customize some of the logos on their vehicles.  I'm not sure what would be best for the maps, since those obviously cannot be dynamically adjusted.

well, the issue isn't really with emblems on Mechs but these used for the needs of interface.
IMO the Clans logo is more acceptable than IS logo - all Clans originated from SLDF, while most of IS armies did not originated from FedCom. ::) Some even hated them ;)

I think that the faction symbols should be removed from the hangar models so that the map makers can have the freedom to chose which factions are fighting. This also lets the devs (in the future - low priority) possibly link a part of the UI to the map for the factions. It would also be cool when the symbols and art on the mechs is implemented that the default faction symbol would then be the symbol of the team that they are fighting for. I think this would add a lot of depth and atmosphere.

And sorry wolves but Ghost Bear FTW!!!!

If the insignia is indeed hardcoded onto the hangars, couldn't the map maker just put a symbol over it?
