I should've known better
« on: November 27, 2010, 09:22:22 AM »
True, with all the assets tied to a proprietary engine, I guess it would be too difficult to switch to a new engine. However since I can't reply to my original annoying reply, here's a link to prove my point of someone giving away a $$ engine:  http://unigine.com/press-releases/101125-linux-giveaway/

And I now realize the difference between modders, scripters, and coders.

Err... not just giving away, but rolling out an advertising campaign, a "competition to support Linux game development". They propose to "give a free license for its top-notch Unigine engine to an experienced team willing to work on a Linux native game". BTW, Uengine is a relatively young project, with a handful of unknown and mostly not-yet-released games using it so it's abilities and ease to use in development are questionable.

I'm not sure I understand the point you're trying to make? That we should switch to a new engine this late in the game? If thats your point, you really have no idea of the scale of the amount of work that takes.

While I think that CryEngine was a really bad decision for several reasons, it is indeed too late in development to do anything about it.
Wish they had stuck with the ETQW engine though :P (yeah, I'm aware of the problems with it)

Are you aware that one of the key problems was that it would not reasonably support maps of MWLL-scales with sufficient performance?  Doom engine maxes out around 1 mile, whereas CryEngine2 can render out 10's of kilometers before you start seeing heavy performance hits so long as you are careful with your design.

Yes, I'm aware that id Tech 4 is unsuitable for this kind of scale. I'm also aware of the terrible mod-compatibility that ETQW had.
Still would've been nice to have a mech game on a recent id Engine :)

Also linux is not a gaming platform and never will be. Most of the guys running linux don't even have the required hardware to play games...
There comes a point where the talking must stop, and people have to do actual work.

Uhh, nope. That's not true. Linux is just as capable at running games. It's just that nobody releases any (apart from id Software and some others)

There's probably a good reason for that.

Yeah and it's quite simple: There are not enough gamers using the Linux platform right now for it to be worth the development efforts and cost it would take to port games to it. Also, DirectX doesn't exist on Linux as far as I know (natively, and running WinE or other Windows emulator is not relevant here), and it has sort of become a standard...

Market share.

And the fact that most game studies have been forced DirectX down their throats.

Another reason for lack of Linux game development is the "RTFB" attitude from the Linux community.  I've tried to get Linux working and every time I asked for help with a problem in the Linux forums I was given personal attacks for being too stupid to figure it out myself and go "RTFB" again.

I am sure some Linux god will take my post to task and confirm my observations and personal experiences.

That sadly seems to be the case in many communities. Ubuntu tries to be friendlier than that, but makes other, very ridiculous design decisions. It's a problem.

I wouldn't chalk game development up to that though. There are other reasons.

I think CryEngine2 was a good choice.
Big maps is #1 for me.  Also, extremely nice graphics.

And since CryEngine3 will be coming out, I am going to guess that there will be a way to port from CryEngine2 to CryEngine3.
So if this mod lives long enough, we might see it in CryEngine3 with new features that can be used from CryEngine3 (procedural destruction, dynamic lighting editor to make cooler lighting, optimized performance, etc)

Doubtful ::)
Even if Crytek releases a modding SDK for CE3, alot of stuff would probably have to be redone for it...
