Ranking
« on: November 20, 2007, 06:07:57 PM »
One of the draws to BF2142 is the ranking/unlock system.  Is there any sort of plan to try and incorporate this into MWLL?  There are multiple ways I can think of to handle this so the ability to do it shouldn't be difficult.

Without know all to much of what is really planned for MWLL you could do a ranking system that at higher ranks you will be able to operate larger mechs and maybe use different weapons for your build.  This would give the mod a feeling of progression and allow people to gradually learn about individual vehicles, mechs, gear...

That would a great thing to have but unless they could incorporate into an existing ranking system it may be too hard to do.  If I were to have the ability to run a persistent server that track locally that would be sufficient for my needs.

We are working with Crytek to try to figure something like this out for MWLL. Rest assured this is something i feel pretty strongly about and have always wanted to have as a major feature to MWLL.

Yes, me too.
The Mech classes already suggest working with something like that, it wold be a shame not to make use of it.

Personally, I deeply disliked the BF2/BF2142 ranking/unlock system, as imo it led to cheaters/statpadders and the like; maybe I'd go for it with a 100% safe punkbuster, but that's just impossible.

I'd rather tie the rank to wealth, and maybe I'd dispose of ranking altogher:
you'd get expensive mechs sparingly and be cautious about their employ and destruction.

Then again, I'm thinking more in a in-unit situation, where the xo/co would assign mechs to skilled pilots according to the costs among other variables.

It is good to hear that this is already being worked on, Criminal.

That is an interesting concept, Krahken.  Having a monetary system and associating it with a unit or clan for purchasing of unit assets would add a nice level of immersion.

There are ups and downs using both systems. We plan to use a mix of the two as stated above. For example, we will not have unlocks be based on rank, but you will be able to buy more equipment by killing and earning more money within that round. This drives the game to be a skilled base game rather than a stats padding-unlocks game. However, we do plan to have a global stats system where people may be able to go online and look up their stats such as Kills, Deaths, Favorite weapons, Wins/Loss, Maps ect... as most do like to view in numbers how they are doing on a global ladder.

The second option of having a CO give you a mech (or more specifically - give you enough money for a Mech) will be centered around the 31CW Game style of play. Planetary League that will have the hundreds of stars where players may roam from planet to planet to battle out in a more traditional league style of play.

These two systems will give players the best of both worlds and still be able to keep them separated from each other for players who don't like the other game types. This mod is more so about bringing the community together as well letting players play how they want when they want.

It's been some time since I've played, but I recall that America's Army had quite a good ranking sistem:
besides the honor ladder (now called "Experience" I believe), it had a good training program ( http://www.americasarmy.com/intel/training.php ).

Say you wanted to qualify as Marksman, you had to reach a given score, for  Sharpshooter a little higher one, etc.
allowing you to get the sniper rifle in game.
There were other trainings: from medical, airborne ... to the dreaded Special Forces ESCAPE & EVADE  ;D .
Rank and badges had some meaning and purpose.

I'd like to see something similar implemeted in MWLL, maybe tied to Solaris as well.

The American Army little tutorials were interesting.  I think they were trying to emulate a bit about what you have to do in bootcamp and tech schools.  Just to give you the feel that you were in the 'real' army... since it's a recruiting tool it makes since.  It would be neat is someone could script a few tutorials like that for MWLL but I don't think it should tie into any unlock type system.

I like what I read in Kamikazex's post.  Rank equaling maybe a multiplier for money which in turn can be used during a round to buy bigger, better things.

So, you lose all your money at the end of a round? I would like a persistent character and bank balance, like in BF2142.

Lets create a table in Acrobat for people to print out. That way they can track their own ranks.
One night at a kon, I sang karekoi with Richard Epcar. And no, you cannot possibly understand how awsome it was. http://www.richardepcar.com/

I don't care about rank, I think what's most important is that money is persistent.

I agree that America's Army tutorials were cool and you can also expect two version of a similar type of tutorial for MWLL. It will basically be the only single player component will we have. It will be "sibko" for the Clans and "Basic Training" for Inner Sphere. All they will be is a simple tutorial on how to play the game and gives you the ability to practice in each vehicle to decide on the fashion you most enjoy playing. It will not give you a rank or any extra unlocks but what it will give you is a leg up on the competition that haven't done it and thus will help you make more c-bills during the round and thus giving you much better equipment.
