SSRMs?
« on: November 30, 2010, 04:27:35 AM »
Are they bad?
I use mechs with SRM6 constantly to the point that I can hit just about anything going any speed with them.
But then when I try to use SSRM6 I can't hit anything.... they don't track that well, and half the time they come out in a wonky star pattern and miss.
Am I doing something wrong? Should I keep my crosshair on the target and fire? Or lead when I fire? What is the optimal range for these?

I'm having a harder time hitting with SSRM than SRM, that just doesn't feel right. Have you guys been having the same troubles?

Short answer.  Leading your target helps a lot, so that more missiles hit.  I try to keep my targets at 100 to 300m.  They used to fly in a totally different pattern, the new 'wall' pattern takes a little getting used to.

I suck!! But WE are AWESOME.  We started a unit.  What's that?!  YOU WANNA TOUCH MY UNIT?!! :P ^^12thVR Recruitment Page(clickthepic) ;)

I thought someone posted a while back that the "pattern" didn't actually matter?

Oh it does, because of it range and lead play such a huge role in getting the salvo to hit.

I never feel very effective with SRMs.

I was told the Owens B was pretty nice as a starter mech. I emptied all my SRMs furiously at everything I could, and by the end, was still a goddamn CDT. I didn't feel like I really did any appreciable damage to anything.

SRM Mad Dog is fun because it's missile mayhem, but I don't think I've ever actually died to that thing.

I'm way more terrified of MRMs.

Also, protip: MRMs are the absolute cheapest weapon per missile per salvo in MWLL.... SSRMs are the most expensive, four TIMES  more expensive per missile per salvo than MRMs. They fire faster, but I'm not a fan of weapons that drag their usefulness out because that just means more time to get killed before I finish the job.

I have killed plenty with both of those mechs, but it takes getting used to the wonky nature of the missiles.

You also want to be at least 75m away from whatever you are shooting at with the SSRM's as they will disperse immediately at launch and need some space to converge. I really do prefer regular SRM's to SSRM's though as I find it easier to hit fast targets with them as well as being better for hit and run attacks.

The key to hitting fast movers with SSRMs is to wait until you have a position where they are moving directly to or away from you. Horizontal and most will miss. This is dependent on range however.  I find SSRMs superior to SRM.

The key with the Owens B is to not target fixate.  Just shoot at everything as you're zipping around the battle field.  It's not built to be single mech destroyer.  The best thing is to get people to fixate on YOU as you drag them back to your teammate where the combined fire power will let you take some of them down :D

Yeah that matches my style as a Scat but... honestly my worst part of the game is the start, I hate all the mech choices.

I feel you there. There aren't really any starting mechs that suit my preferred play style. And I'm sick of rolling Uller A's.

QFT

I love drag ppl into the loving arms of my comrades. Especially when the enemy is insistent on legging me. :P

Also, have SSRM's in chain fire, group one, SPL, group two, and leave SSRMs on group fire, group 3.  This saves ammo and allows you to hit multiple targets very rapidly.  Oh yeah, repair frequently, you'll be racking up Cbills and rank in no time.

if you are really good at leading the srms will always be a better solution. if you lock the target with ssrms, then twitch over to lead the missles don't follow the lead and go directly toward what you're locked onto, one thing i do when i have a target running across my screen is lock then turn my mech way to the side i want to lead and fire. in some cases you can lock on with ssrm's and shoot over hills or around corners. both types have their ups and downs, just depends on the situation and how well you know how to use both of them

Here's a simple fix:
a) Improve turning capabilities of SSRMs tenfold
b) balance with lower ROF and only allowing them to shoot WHEN LOCKED
c) ??
d) PROFIT (and fun unique weapon) :D
