I try to like Steam, but then this happens

So I recently found my old HL2 disks and decided I wanted to install them and try some of the mods out there. I install the thing on my computer and whatnot, get to the end of installation and bring my very old steam account, chaosdivinewind (the name was a random thing a friend of mine use to use for emails), but anyway, I went to input the CD key and it tells me that the key is a duplicate and cannot be used  :o . This is the only version of HL2 I have ever bought, and it is currently only installed on this PC yet steam wishes to screw with me.

Anyone know how I can fix this?

I've emailed steam about it, but I am wondering if anyone knows a quick fix?

If you did not enter this code before you got infortunate and some random key generator generated exactly your key. But if you got the original, steam will be able to help you. As far as I know you will be asked to send them your original HL2 DVD or something along the line to prove that you are legit. But I have no idea what happens there after.

You won't actually have to send Steam the physical discs, but they will probably ask you to take a picture or scan of your game discs and the packaging in such a way that shows your key in relationship to the discs.
 
I did the above about a year ago, I was back up and installed/valid within 24 hours.

Yeah they need me to send in a scan/photo of the CD key. Although I do not have any of the packaging, just the paper CD cases the CDs came in. Hopefully it will be enough.  :-\

Same exact thing happened to me a couple years ago, a scan of the CD-key on the paper slip was enough. :)

cool beans then. Still, steam has always been on my bad side, and I really want to like it...the first time I had to use it, when I got HL2 ages ago, it was so clunky on my pc and it had to download all these updates for itself before it would let me play my HL2. Took all day to do, when I'm sitting there with the game I just bought and cannot play  :'( .

Anyways, hopefully one day I can learn to love it, I mean robots can learn to love so I can too  8)

still havent got to play my HL2....the automated email they sent me said it will require a receipt that is from the past 90 days.....I bought the game when it was released. I am still waiting though, they need the support ticket number handwritten next to the CD key so I did that. I will rant very angrily on this forum if they don't let me play my game, and just like when daddy had too much to drink it just best if you all look away  >:(

I personally find it quite tasteless to make a mockery of what should be a very serious matter.
Alcoholism is still a very serious disease issue in the world today.

Anyhow, best of luck getting them to fix your gaming issue. You better make sure to install those mods once you get it running though. We will need to have a serious talk if you think vanilla HL2 is good =)

ah sorry merf, was just in a bad mood. Been stressed out  :-X . Honestly I probably won't even play it now lol. I may try that goldeneye 007 mod, but that would be it. Now its more of just the principle of not being able to play the game I paid for

well it seems the world of online downloadable content is just set out to frustrate the crap out of me for the weekend. Since Steam wasn't answering my emails, I rented Predators over Amazon.com and for some reason I get no sound for the movie -_-

/Griffin-Is really beginning to hate this "no hard copy" technology

Edit: Plus my college's email server is down so I cannot access the paper I need to work on  :'( I need a small animal to punt.
