Thanny-boy
« on: December 05, 2010, 08:02:56 PM »
Does anybody else feel concerned with thanatos weapon load out being too weak? In all configurations it is simply not worth buying. Its firepower is usually equal or weaker than bushwackers. It has large profile witch in my opinion only annules its heavier armor protection compared to bushy and is perhaps easiest mech to put out of action (its loadout is packed in one arm). Compared to 10 ton lighter and more manueverable loki witch, in its brawler variants has more than double firepower, thanatos is in every aspect left in dust. I can concur from 0.4 previews that we will have new price re-balance from new IS ranking system and I hope that IS mech prices will be balanced accordingly to clan assets but even with (potential) changes this one deserves more love. A lot more. I will not suggest thanny variants but most variants should be mid range/brawlers mostly because its inherited design advantages/flaws. Would like to see some lbx variants and for thanny, say lbx 10 in dual pack + mrm 30. There are almost NO lbx 10 variants in clan/IS stable so my suggestion wold be to enrich our mech flavor with more of these. Also it should be mostly ammunition based mech as similar class of IS (warhammer) is already available in mixed energy/ammo variants.
Opinions?

I agree on that, at least on 3 of the 4 variants. But the UAC Thanny is my favorite mech in 0.3.2 (it took a long time, but it kept growing on me), and I dare to say that I can defeat anything with it, maybe with the exeption of a well played Beatstick or UAC20-Mauler.

The UAC20 and DSRM6 gives me enough firepower to overwhelm most mechs and the GECM and MASC allow me to pick my battles.

True, it is a solid variant and I dare to call it is the only valid in its price range (still too close to much better-all around warhammer) but serious disadvantage keeps it from being a first choice. Again, its only my opinion  :). Its firepower comes from lone uac20. Lets say that you attack any skilled player. Considering that you are in range of uac 20 (ideal range for that mech) your uac would last even more than one serious barrage. Vs cerppc witch infests your mech with heat witch thanny is unable to dissipate (0 hs) you are risking early shutdown AND there is always its huge profile. Leading lasers at one spot on thanny is child's play. Nevertheless its a great variant with decent firepower but its still far underweight for 75 ton mech. Even that awesome variant is underweight and I find it hard to put it in heavy class compared to brawler bushy: lbx 20, 2xssrm6 and 2 small pulse lazors AND far far smaller profile allowing it to take less hits in one spot.

Oh Thanny Boy, the NARCs the NARCs are calling
From base to base and around the mountain side
Your coolant's gone and all components frying
Eject, Eject! or surely you will die

But come ye back with a shi-in-ny new Novacat
Or may-yay-be a Ma-ad Cat Mark Two
You'll blaze away with lasers rated terrawatt
Till they're slagged and really pissed at you!

Give us back the MW4 style Thanatos with a LBX20 and MRM30 (iirc) with some medium lasers.

Your post is invalid.

I like the HGauss variant. Just enough ammo to rape some face, JJs and GECM make it a good surprise buttrape machine on Inferno or other maps with lots of ledges. Short ranged, sure, and with all the firepower in one weapon...

The MW4 style Thanatos was the original Thanatos Prime when it was first put in MWLL.  ::)

Holy shit I was wondering what happened to that variant. I thought maybe I was crazy.

I remember liberally tearing assholes to pieces with that thing. It was like an awesome Summoner contender. I think most of my damage came from the MRMs but seeing as how an MRM Catapult can dish out some absurd levels of damage that was more symptomatic of overpowered MRMs than an overpowered variant.

Nah, I like the Thanatos.
The Thanny C can solo clan heavies... 'nough said, though from my calculations it seems to be missing a ton.
As for the Prime, consider this, it is both under-performing and over-performing.

It is under-performing because it was built off of DHS but does not have them.

It is over-performing because its heat management is amazingly good despite having less half the heat sink power it should, the CBT has 6 DHS, I'm not sure where that last ton went.

Consider if you gave it DHS... you could have 3 DHS and it would still outperform its current great heat management with 2 tons to spare.
Use that extra two to upgrade to an MRM30? Boom headshot?

Also consider the JJs take up 5! tons so there is always the option of removing those and freeing up tons of space.
The Gauss variants are only under-performing because those weapons are under-performing... not the Thanny's fault.
The thanny is just rock solid and I can't wait to pimp it out in Mechlab.

I really like the A and B variants very much also. I'm not a big fan of the Prime really. It needs like one more lbl or something to be just right. The C is walking death to anything that can match its speed. I constantly take Warhammers and Madcats by surprise. The key is to use it's superior turning ability and speed to spread the damage out around the torso. I very rarely take CT hits in it.

I have to be in the mood to run a Thanatos. Most of the time I can beat a Thanatos with a Warthog. Strange that I can rarely beat a Madcat in a Warthog. It comes down to pilot skills honestly. You have to milk it for all its worth. I dominated on Marshes today with the A variant. I got 20 kills in a row in a Warthog on Thunder Rift right after though. I have found a way to get from the top of the bridge near Clan spawn down to the mid bridge on the right side of the hill with no JJ. You wont be spotted until you have made it to mid bridge usually.  I just decided to see if you could walk it today. I usually do it with a Shadowcat with JJ. Much to the IS team's chagrin, you can walk there! :-X

How about fixing its size?
It is only 75 tones yet it dwarfs the supposedly mighty Atlas easily. Run a Thanatos behind an Atlas and you can hit the Thanatos by shooting around the Atlas. Did they put a luxury suit in instead of a cockpit on that thing or what gives?

/Merf - Can not imagine that size was what was originally envisioned for/within BTU.

Well real question is how it performs on the field. Its true that prime has good heat compared to heat sinks it has. In its prime variant it has enticing combination of:

1 ERLBL
2 ERMBL
1 MPL
1 MRM20

c3,gecm,jj,5hs, 2 free, luxury apartment, xxl silhouette witch dwarfs an atlas, largest lt/rt hit-boxes ever (suicide pill not included). And all that with 75 tons.

I don't want/can't hate this enough. Its a c-bills milk factory. Buy it only if you are in love with your enemy. Just imagine shooting insulting any mad cat variant with this. And one can get the all the goodies of jump-jetting after unloading all your weapons and not doing any damage, just for the amusement. Perhaps the enemy in madcat/novacats/lokis will have pity/good sense of humor. My burning wish is to preserve this one and, when devs bring out the direwolf (!), show just him who's the boss with this thanny variant.  8)

Variant b is even better. After unloading

1 LtGauss
2 ERLBL
2 ERMBL
2hs,jj,gecm,all-thanny-boy-goodies, causes global warming

one can expect shut down and be painlessly amputated from battlefield by, say... any heavy.  JJ for extra laughs. Imagine the story of IS pilot in this attacking a cerppc novacat:

***
"... so I got angry at him like a sheep and bravely fired another shot, this time hitting his CT! My heat was critical so I had to wait and make my next shot count! I mean his CT is almost yellow. And then he spotted me and with sheer luck he successfully defeated me! The bastard was..."

"Wait wait... so how did he spot you? You said that you were well hidden, passive, you have gecm and he was passive by all accounts."

" I dunno. Those damn clanners are cheaters."

In the meantime, on the other side of the hill, will hidden and camping, providing warmth to neigburing beatstick and shadowcat, the tired clan novacat pilot chats with his teammates in arms:

*phew-phew-phew-phew* "HAHAHA! Look at  that! Clean shot. Those damn atlasses can be really  something if they attack in swarms."

"So what happened with that thanatos B? And how the hell did you spot h... wait. *SMACK!* That RAC atlas actually came close?! Die foul beast! *SMAAACK!!!* Man, i love beatsticks... ok all done. So what happened then?"

"So I pretend not to see clouds of smoke gushing all around and forest catching fire. I mean, the poor fella has gecm, gotta respect that one. I newer EWER saw that much heat generated from such few weapons. Anyway this one is really persistent and my paint was almost scratched. I had to do something."

"What did you do?"

"Well, I fired a single ppc at him, and he melted away trying to return fire. It was sick and i just had to put it down. Poor thanny. Remember when thanatos meant something back in 2.0?"

"Yea i remember. Poor thing."

No reason at all. It should/will exist i just know it!
But would really like to see dual lbx 10 thanatos config. One arm 2x LBX 10, Other dual srm6 2xsmall pulse laser in torso.
