Frosty the map, makes my G..p... U... Cry.. <sing it> 8)
« on: December 05, 2010, 11:37:35 PM »
Last night the populated server ran Frosty twice in a row. I for once wasnt running fraps, but I could tell that I was dipping into single digit fps and several people were commenting that their various high end cards or computers were literally crying trying to run the map . Is this everyones experience? Is frosty the most taxing map we have so far? Visually , I love looking at those mountains with e optics, theyre amazing, and though it definitely adds to the immersion, I dont know if all the snow and wind taken away diminishes the map . From the few times Ive played it, the map looks like it is actually one of the better layouts with excellent fields of fire etc. Is this perhaps a future option, No snow?
Also , have frostys trees been optimized like on clear cut.
I guess this thread is , all things frosty.
Have at it.

Frostbite is one of the less computer friendly maps, but I think Thunder Rift is even worse; before I upgraded my graphics card my FPS would cut in half or below when looking at the center.

For me Frostbite is also currently the framerate killer (not constantly though, just if there is a lot of action). Clearcut also occasionally lags for me, but far less then Frostbite.

Never had any notable issues with Thunder Rift though.

Map tier list, with respect to frame rate, in my experience.

1. Mirage/Sandblasted.
2. Marshes/Thunder Rift
3. Extremity
4. Inferno
5. Clearcut
6. Frostbite

Might as well rename the thread to "what do you think of all the maps"

Mirage: A good map in all respects, although it sees limited usage in side paths by the majority, and prone to sniper fests (F4? F5? D8? Both those areas, on both sides of the buildings closest to the IS base).

Sandblasted: A mediocre map in my opinion, with heavy reliance on long range and aero superiority. Fighting usually gravitates to one side of the map, where both teams are either in Novacats, Shivas, Catapults, or Huits waiting for a NARC or some moron to step out.

Marshes: My favourite map, although a coordinated team with a Tom and a pair of NARCers for missile boats will probably push the other team's face in until they can organize a counter push (unlikely). Great long range and short range options, with the hills providing cover or avenues of attack, while no man's land along the airstrip forces you to choose between sneaking around the side or moving quickly through the center.

Thunder Rift: A great map, limited by the fact that nobody plays towards the southern half of the map (away from the bridge), and the ability to snipe from just about anywhere. The water's pretty annoying too, since it's hard at times to navigate. The multi-tier layout, however, makes for great jumpjet ambush opportunities against unwary opponents.

Extremity: Better since the revamp, although for some reason, everybody heads for the HPG stations, which, in my opinion, are death traps. Lighting needs to be worked on; too harsh during the day, too dark during the night.

Inferno: An interesting map, made difficult by frustrating lava flows, falling through hangar floors, no ability to walk through hangar walls to the outside, and the fact that nobody sends a lance around the outside. Also, those god damned VTOLs.

Clearcut: Those damned trees. Also, very prone to sniping, and the small map allows for you to sit around in a Tom (not recommended), a Huit (more recommended), or a Shiva doing 30 second Fbomb runs (not recommended, you cheesy cheesemonger). Beautiful looking though, but it needs more cover to be awesomer.

Frostbite: Those damn trees, and those damn blizzards. Layout's good, but the map is wider than it needs to be, I feel. I've never walked around in the first 2 columns of the grid. If only thermal imaging worked...

The frostbite map is actually a modified version of the mw4 frostbite heightmap with extra terrain added on. In the future i want to remake frostbite, the layout is good but the visuals are horrible. I had an awesome looking version but then it was butchered with a blowtorch and chainsaw into what you have now. Makes my soul cry everytime i see it.

This is what Frostbite terrain used to look like. This is just the terrain with textures, nothing else. I plan to remake it in the future, with these heightmaps. No idea when though. Enjoy :)

Endless blizzard - that's what Frostbite is for me. Each time I play it I have blizzard for so long that I eventually quit cause my eyes hurt. :-\ So I can't say much how this map plays or how well does it look - I just don't see much.

ps. shadowkiller - your version looks AWESOME.

MMMM those screenshots are superior....

Frostbite is the only map where I suffer framerate problems, so I can imagine how bad it must be for borderline PCs.

Weird, I never experienced problems with the framerate on Frostbite; it runs best next to Mirage and Sandblasted. But indeed those screens look way better than I had expected when I first looked at them fullsize.

Would be interesting to know what changes on the map were made for 040. But I doubt you're allowed to share that info yet.

Either way it seems odd that I did never encounter any frame problems although my PC isn't the best. Just to complete the picture here not everyone has problems. ;)

E8400 with GTX260
Single digit framerates near the end of the map...

I'm better off flipping through the screenshots thread of this forum for better framerate...

I really like the layout of the map, though.

Have any of you tried "e_clouds 0" on Frostbite?

It doesn't remove all clouds and snow but it really lessens the thickness of the effect, which in turn jumps your FPS up quite a bit.

I noticed that the only time my computer really struggles for FPS in this mod is when trying to render a thick area of imposters (clouds). Like looking up into the clouds on Clearcut, I would immediately dip to low FPS and stutters until I look away from it.

I know it's not all of the problem but it may be some of it.

Good tip with "e_clouds 0", will have to try that.

As for the layout of Frostbite - i don't like how easy it is to camp near-base on the hills and reign down death. On all other maps moving in on the long-range campers is much easier due to cover or flanking paths. Both are IMO not sufficiently present on Frostbite and what tiny cover there is is mostly invalidated by the height of the major hills.

Why was it butchered? o_O
