3D Computer Monitor
« on: December 11, 2010, 05:26:36 PM »
Hey MWLL community, I am in the market for a 3D computer monitor. This monitor will be driven by an ATI HD5970 GPU. Please offer some recommendations on what I might buy. Budget is $300-$500 USD.

Thanks.

Intel Core i7 @ 3.50GHz, AMD/ATI HD6990 LCS, Catalyst Control Center V12.3, 6GB Tri-Channel Dram, 640GB HD, 128GB SSD, DirectX 11,  Windows 7 Pro (64 bit), Corsair 1200 Watt Power Supply, Liquid Cooled GPU and CPU.

the existing 3D technology is kinda crap, wait for the kind that doesn't need special glasses to wear
Play my free open source web game MiniMek - Urbie Defense!  Its "mega fun" but with mini meks!

Mehh ... the standards are still scattered but I bought this anyway ...  :P

I bought the VG236HE package because it is the monitor only and not the NVIDIA 3D Vision stuff. The monitor itself is pretty good for the price range for both 3D and 2D. I will wait and see how the AMD 3D solution unfolds.

Seeing as how Avatar gave me a blistering headache, 3D gaming where everything is in focus and constantly popping in and out of your vision sounds downright nauseating.

Yea there is a significant percentage of the general population that cannot even see a 3D simulation. But I have no problem with it.

I should warn you, from experience with 3D vision, it's a MASSIVE performance hit on this game.  It also dosn't like a lot of the game's 2D elements (the hud, and any trees or objects at long range).

I do not intend to use the 3D capability of this monitor for MWLL, mostly for other well written 3D games of the future, maybe even Crysis 2 with its S-3D approach. And as of yet there is no standardized method for PC 3D. NVIDIA has their proprietary solution and as I hear it is a pretty good one BUT you must have a compatible NVIDIA GPU. AMD/ATI is a bit behind the curve for 3D and I am assuming their solution will be the alternate frame sequencing type with active shutter glass synchronization. This monitor, with its 120 Hz refresh rate will provide a good 3D experience for the NVIDIA 3D solution and also the future AMD 3D solution. And it has pretty good 2D response for a monitor of its price category.

I playtested MWLL 0.1 in nVidia 3D and haven't seen any massive performance hit - there was some difference but it wasn't anything like 50 fps -> 25fps.
Crysis isn't capable of rendering some objects in 3D as it should, so water, all particle effects, and UI appear in 2D. As far as UI looks good - it's just an overlay, doesn't disturb anything, and problems with water aren't visible often, the particle effects in 2D are unbearable, it's something that makes your brain smoke. Inferno was totally unplayable, similar with Extremity, Clearcut worked well to a degree. I don't remember other maps though.

I would totally wait until Crysis 2 to come out first before buying a card.
You'd be able to find stuff that's more powerful or cheaper several months from now.

I have the NVidia 3D.  I like it a lot, but it performs better in certain games than others.  Batman Arkham Asylum and Left 4 Dead, amazing!  Crysis (and variants) only pretty good.  Things are fine until you try to zoom, then you get some ghosting.  Crysis 2 is suppose to have this dead on.

In short, very cool with certain games.  If this game is your reason for buying, I'd wait.
