Fun-stealing tactics
« on: December 17, 2010, 09:08:37 AM »
Some tactics possible in the current beta can be quite frustrating if you can't counter them and some frustrate some specific players. In the spirit of "without it being said you don't always realize it and can't change it" and to give some outlet let's name them.

Most are probably mainly hard to counter in less organized pub games if it doesn't accidentally balance out and of course "fun" is often very subjective.

Anyway, some of them i noticed:
  • BA farming: Some players go for BA and can give ~30k to their team every respawn. You don't get much points for killing BA atm, so this can lead to high imbalance early in the game
  • excessive Arrow IV camping: One team goes for many A4 assets (often positioned close to their base) and NARCs the hell out of the other team
  • ...?

I find the Madcat B to be more of a cheese mech than the Novacats other than the C.
Just too much stomping power on lights and mediums.

The occasional LT out when winning by 1000 points on Marshes is kinda cheesy too.

Madcat B = Big cheese.
Puma C = Lil' cheese.

Arrow campers + Raven combo is just punch kittens annoying.

Other times its just the other team bunching up and moving in a group when your team is incapable/unwilling of doing the same and having to constantly fight 4 and 5 vs 1 fights.

Vtols circling over head picking away with LRMs. If any of them actually somehow kills me I unleash my holy Harasser E wrath upon them.

The Inferno Hill.

Picking up a term of Siilk here: Skycamping. Works like this: You roll out a vtol, or mech and narc enemies with it. Also you have an ELRM Shiva flying circles above the enemies head at ~1200m altitude. Rain down lrms, enemy hardly will find cover and cannot outrun them anymore. Takes down a Mad Dog in 2 slavos and is next to impossible to counter (being that we do not have an LBX10 Sulla yet....).

Mass Huits: Honestly, 3 or more of those can really ruin any kind of proper battle because they just mow away almost everything at very long range. 1 or maybe 2 of those as AA are okay, but by the time more are fielded you pretty much have to resort to arrows or LT, which blows.

Players switching teams to be on the winning team no matter what, also players who late join and join the winning team.

Oops, I thought the Madcat B was the one with 2 CERPPC and 2 UAC10.  I don't often pilot Madcats so I wouldn't know really, I think any elite vet could stomp just as well with any of the MadCat varients, if 2 or more are doing it then fugetaboutit!

I have fun either way, I am still playing aren't I?

have fun out there kids...

But I fear that's a topic for another thread, unless you'd like to have your thread derailed.

I don't know man. At least the Timberwolf has heat issues. You can barely fire off the two large lasers, and god help you if get stuck in a brawl. Coolant will help, but it doesn't last. The Adder could be considered "lil' cheese", but only against targets up to medium weight. Heat management's better in the Adder than the Timberwolf at any rate.

The Novacat, on the other hand, can survive in a brawl because its coolant is just that much more effective. Both the PPC variant and the 5LLAS variants have their merits.

  • When that damned LT pilot not only manages to spot me at close range, but also gets a round off, splashes something behind me and knocks all my armour into the red, ejects, harasses me to death, and doesn't have the decency to die when caught in a bracket of 10 SRMs.
  • That wasn't a tactic so... how about you advance with your team, and then, suddenly your team mates have disappeared, and it's now a 1v3+?

Only imbalance I noticed here are those aeros and vtols that are really hard to kill with meches. But there you have few variants, and even better there are AA tanks.

How you gain, or trade money should be improved, not changed. Same goes for last hit... I kinda dislike that. Gaining money as you damage enemies is ok.

Arrows + NARC isnt that big problem IMO.

Also, scores. Its a rare that team who takes the lead will lose. Sometimes its hard to take a lead again.
I'we been in few games where odds have changed, big time.

All in one. I didnt notice any major problems other than these; last hit, BA farming and scores system.

Fun stealing tactic, other than already mentioned here? Landsharking! It's really annoying to find yourself attacked by laser NCat or Awesome who shoots through a hill with only cockpit sticking above the hilltop.

ELRM Shivas, A4s, NARC, PPC Cat, economic abuse, FBombs, Long Tom, in that order.

'Landsharking' is an exploit and not a tactic.

For me -like always- the "Fun-stealing tactics" are the ejecting pilots, the Kamikaze (&eject)-pilots and the CERPPC-spam.

Played a pub game today. And the other team kept legging at long range... grrr! that really pisses one off.
Well had to return the favor with a NCat, and then they said it was no fun.  :P

Hmm, now that I have vented my frustration, I can return to playing   ;D

Well, the dCKs usually play as a team only as well. Basically cause we're only 5 people anyway.

Other than that I actually see only 2 problems being the already mentioned skycamp and Arrow / ELRM camping in general. I know the heat management and the armor  of the Nova Cat needs adjustment but other than that I don't see the problem it can acutally carry the amount of weapons. As for most other loadouts there is always a sort of counter against it. But most of the people complaining about game balance errors in general are just blaming their on lack of skill or experience on the game. Seriously I don't see what it so bad about the MRMpult the Beatstick, the Glasscannon (Hellbringer C), Demolisher the Invincible and most other loadouts people keep complaining about. Sure some are better some are weaker but I actually don't see why everyone is whining. Let's just wait for 040 and afterwards complain for I at least assume that some of the issues people see will be fixed. So at this point complaining about loadouts and tactics is pretty much unnecessary. But hee, I guess I'm the one to talk here always hating against campers. :D
