these box's are for an ISP's own gaming network, thats what they were bought for :)
Then why not install MS Webserver 08 R2?  It's a perfect, lightweight, gameserver environment.  Set the dedicated servers up as system services and you'd be set.

Because they run linux, thats what all of their servers run, thats what they wanted running on them, and thats what they put on them long before i came along. They don't want windows servers in their network for what ever reason their net-admins have, i've requested a windows box previously but it just won't happen (i guess they don't see the need/don't want to spend money on licensing windows for game servers)

I'm not sure why you keep questioning all this, thats the way they box's are setup and i'm working with what i've got, if this server won't work, or turns out to lag or not run right, then we won't host it (in its current form).

Hey ShadoX and all helping out.

Just thought to say that I have asked him to check this out and I had no idea of the troubles I seemed to have caused for my ISP gaming Guru.

As I have caught with the MW:LL bug, I so would like to raise awareness of this mod to get a good team happening 'down under' and would like to publicly Thank ShadoX for giving this a good go and not just a 'it didn't work first time'

so

THANKS

(and quietly hoping he is a magician, not to say the rest of you don't deserve a thanks too)  ;D

Fingers crossed,

Laz

Although I'm fairly sure now that ShadoX' problem was the outdated windows folder, I'd still like to know whether it worked for him in the end. ;)

To anyone else looking to run a ded server:
My script contains all instructions needed and will give you a server far more stable and efficient than any worthless bloated Windows environment could ever hope to. All while delivering the server console on an actual console that thus can be viewed easily over SSH or interfaced with just about anything.
I've been running several instances in parallel for months on our machine and absolutely nothing seems to bring them down or cause bugs that are not inherent in Crysis (such as mem leaks).

I am not saying running it in linux is bad...   ;)

I am just saying we did a little testing and found some client crashes on a linux based server that didn't seem to occur on the windows based server.
These were very brief tests so I am not sure it is even an issue at all. It probably is not.

We do all of our testing on windows based servers now
Therefore, it is possible that there could be game issues that we don't catch in testing since all the testing is done on windows based servers.
So we need to keep that in mind if issues develop over time.

In the end, it didn't work, although i never really gave up, i recently moved house which ment it got pushed too the back of the line :)
Last thing i did was regenerate the .wine directory (i think i even recompiled wine again since a bug fix release had come out since the last compile) but that didn't work.
I might try it on one of our other box's just to confirm its not just something specific to that box (ie might be an issue with Debian 5)

<snip>

No problems Lazarus, i like MWLL too, it was worth a try
I know a few others who are interested in playing also (they're currently playing the "free release" of MW Mercenaries so) but yeah who knows this might just be a problem with a specific box or an OS thing (which would mean it would have too go onto our high end box's running that latest debian and that probably wouldn't happen)

Good news everyone!

I just set up a new Debian6 server based on my script/howto and it works amazingly great.

Well, it's probably bad news for you, ShadoX, as that confirms that your distro must be to be the problem :|
