Having one bugger of a time connecting to an online game.
« on: December 29, 2010, 10:17:54 PM »
Hey all, first time poster here.

I downloaded Crysis just so I could try out MWLL, but my experience finding a game has been horrible.  I connected to a game for the first time this afternoon for a grand total of two minutes before I had connection issues and got shown the door.

I get "server authentication failed" a lot in my attempts to connect.  The servers I'm trying to connect to aren't password protected, so what's to authenticate?

I'm running 0.4.1 and I know it is brand new and all, so could this be part of the reason I can't find/connect to games?  That being that the servers have not been upgraded to the latest version?

I visited the dedicated server stickied thread and pulled a bunch of dedicated server IP addresses from there, but the most recent post was from June/July so I didn't put much faith in them working.  They didn't.

Is there something I'm doing wrong?  Perhaps ports I need to forward?  I can't wait to give this mod a shot so any advice would be greatly appreciated.

have you tried running Crysis/Wars without launching the mod and connecting to a match yet? There's some gamespy and CD-key authentication that has to be done first after you install the game the first time.
Play my free open source web game MiniMek - Urbie Defense!  Its "mega fun" but with mini meks!

I was able to connect to that one game briefly.  Would that even happen if this cd key thing were an issue?

Also, I'm running the steam version of crysis if that helps.

Sometimes the CD-Key can become corrupted upon crashing Crysis itself. Which Authentication (number) is shown at exiting the server?

Server Authentication (1) - Wrong server password
Server Authentication (2) - Your PunkBuster is either outdated or corrupt!
Server Authentication (3) - Your CD-Key is corrupt!
Server Authentication (4) - You are not logged in!

Thanks lightning. I believe im getting the (3) authentication failure. Crysis has had a couple hard crashes, that could have corrupted my cd key? How would I go about fixing that?

Are the Popup requesting you to re-enter the CD-Key, if so try that first.
Elesewhere you may want to add the CD-Key manually to your Windows Registry Database (i.e. Windows/regedit.exe) and search for ergc. Make sure its the Crysis Wars code you found and not Crysis;

Windows 32-Bit: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Electronic Arts\Electronic Arts\Crysis Wars\ergc
Windows 64-Bit: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Electronic Arts\Electronic Arts\Crysis Wars\ergc

Click edit on the (standard) file and re-enter the CD-Key in Capitals.

NB: I haven't validated if simply deleting the string will force the Client to re-enter the CD-Key upon launching the game though I assume this would be the case.

You may also first try and delete the entire Crysis Was folder in My Games/My Documents/Crysis Wars and see if that forces you Client to re-enter the CD-Key.

There is no popup requesting a cd key.  So can we be sure that is the problem?  I don't mind fiddling with the registry, but I just want to make super sure before I go poking around in there.

Additionally, I did get into a regular multiplayer game in Crysis and played without issue (one server gave me the (3) error, the other let me in and it played fine.), however I still cannot connect to a MWLL server (all two! of them showing for me) because of the (3) error.

You keep mentioning Crysis Wars (I'm playing on Crysis), and I'm seeing that a lot here on the forums.  I take it to understand that Wars is going to be the only supported game as of 0.5.0 and that Wars is the multiplayer component of Warhead, so if I bought Warhead I would also get Wars.  Are those statements accurate?  Do you find that more people play MWLL on Wars or vanilla Crysis?

A reading of this thread --> http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1687766  indicates it's an issue with the steam CD key. I and many others have this issue.

Even though I have been getting the (3) error when trying to connect Crysis has never explicitly told me there is a problem with my cd key or asked me to change it.  Can I be sure that this is truly the problem?

Through that link it seems that people have had luck contacting EA support and downloading it directly from them.  That's my next stop.

After contacting EA they hooked me up with a digital download directly from their servers.  Hopefully this will take care of my problems.

I'm sure I will need to re-install MWLL, is there a way to save my current action maps so I don't have to go through configuring my controls all over again?

I confirm it does work... I just did the same thing and they hooked me up with a digital copy from their EA Downloader. Check my other post in this forum...

Well, I got it downloaded from the EA Download Manager, but when I click the "decrypt" button in the manager nothing happens.  Any ideas?

EDIT: For some reason a reboot did the trick.

Not sure what you're talking about... I never got that "Decrypt" thing you're referring to??

I just got a fresh CD key for wars from EA. As I have the steam version, which overwrites the CD key registry each time it connects to steam, I have to manually edit the registry entry for the CD key each and every time I boot the game.

One STEAM user did this:

...

SOLUTION: STEAMS KEYS ARE MESSED UP. Contact EA, they will give you a new key after about 40 mins of waiting. just tell them you just bought it and the steam key is not working. give them the steam key and they will look it up. then, load up REGULAR crysis, try to log onto a PB server, it will fail. enter the new CD key when it asks and then exit the game. CLOSE STEAM. then try MWLL .worked for me. now DO NOT load crysis EVER with steam. it will reset the key back to Steam's bad key.
