During shopping I accidentally saw Win7 sitting around on a shelf there... it was 199.99€

So eff you win7, I'm staying on XP

why the heck would you buy it off a shelf?  thats $261 USD !!!  You can order it for $125 for enough licenses for three computers!  thats <$50 for each pc...

or just get one if thats all you need for less.....

The 3 licenses is the family pack with Home Basic or at best home premium, which are, in my eyes, not worth the hassle of getting.
Try and get an OEM License, these should be MUCH cheaper. And if it's ultimate, even the language does not really matter, as you can install different languages later on.
And there are still 5 manipulator discounts

If you use Bitlocker or need 35 Languages to switch between....then get Ultimate..

If you only need the 35 Language support, get Professional

If you just want Windows 7 with the nice visual elements get Home Premium

If you just want Windows 7 without the visual effects get Basic

If you buy an OEM version, which I do NOT recommend, you will be limited on re-activations.  The activation policy on OEM is now different than it was in the Windows XP days...besides...OEM is not any cheaper and has no benefits over Home Premium.

Home Premium is Ultimate without the language support or bitlocker.  You dont want Bitlocker and 99% of people could care less about changing between 35 languages.

and if you cant get by in life without using a "five finger discount" i feel sorry for you

Over here, Win7 Ultimate cost up to 300€.
While the Win7 Ultimate OEM/SystemBuilder was available for about 150€
They have to sell it to us over here. Main difference: No tech support, no documentation.
Only Disk and Key in the Package.
Furthermore, the different Versions of Windows can only access different quantities of RAM.

I can buy OEM easily, why would I?  It's limited, Home Premium is not.

Windows 7 does not limit ram access.......other than 32bit vs. 64bit.  You need 64bit for 3Gb or more memory and 32bit for anything less will do but so will 64bit

dont buy ultimate, its a waste of money unless you need 35 language support

well i stand corrected, probably never heard of it because....lets see

on a 32bit system nobody runs over 4Gb of ram because it's a hard limit on a 32bit system basically, if they do they didnt do their homework

WIndows 7 Home Premium, the one i recommend will use 16Gb's of memory....nobody needs more than 16Gb's of memory 99% of the time, 8Gb is overkill, 4Gb is rarely used fully.....and the power users will be running Professional x64bit which support 192GB's of ram...go try to find a motherboard that anyone here would be buying that allows use of 192Gb of ram....LOL

you're right, but the limits are so insanely high it doesnt matter....only a fool would configure a system that would exceed those limits and they knew that

*shrugs*
there's pre built systems with 12 and 16Gigs of RAM out there.
and those are not even the high end gaming systems.
I've seen pre builts with 24 gigs of RAM x.x

Yeah.....there's a reason prebuilts are that way, to get more $$ from people that don't know better.

The hardware upgrades are needed because it seems developers moved into the work-motive of "fapp your optimization we dont need no stinkin optimization" about 20 years ago with the original Wing Commander paving the way for such mindset.
Fixed.

The reason prebuits have a lot of RAM is because in the first days of vista, most pcs were sold short on ram. Then consumers started buying systems that were high in RAM and still do.

The ONLY thing that can replace RAM is: MORE RAM.

I guess......never bought a prebuilt.  I knew right away by simply reading a few reviews of Windows Vista that it was going to want tons of ram so I doubled up to 2Gb when I dumped XP.  All people have to do is research their purchases......who spends $1000 on anything without looking into it just that much?
