MWLL is awesome but doomed.
« on: January 04, 2011, 05:00:06 AM »
Four friends and I were extremely excited about this game. We all work in the IT industry. It took us 32 actual hours of trouble shooting to get this mod to work. Many other people are smashing their heads on their keyboards to make it happen. We ALL had issues.

There are a lot of fixes that we don't mind doing, but this will eventually kill the game. People don't have the patience for this.

All of these problems stem from EA. EA could make a lot of money and this game could grow into something wonderful, if the issues resolving the CD key error are solved.

You guys put together an amazing product. We want it to grow and thrive.

Work with EA. There is no reason that people who legally buy a copy of a game should have this much trouble playing a wonderful mod.

Good luck!

What happened?
What did you need to do for 32 hours?

Let the devs know, they will try to improve it.

I never had any problem installing the mod.  Not when I first got into it during 0.3.2, and not recently when I changed to Crysis Wars for 0.4.  The downloads took me a while, yeah, but with crappy comcast it's not the dev's fault.  Manually fixing the sound file stuff didn't give me any trouble either.

Of course there are a lot of fixes to be done, that's why it's still in OPEN BETA. I for one have no problem continuing to play the game while it's still in beta for however long it takes for the final product to roll out. Hell, I even get to help fix the problems too through this forum.

I'm sure there would be copyright issues if EA got into this since Microsoft hold the rights to the mechwarrior franchise.

Sounds like they had the Wars+Steam Key issue, which the Devs can't help with...
Bitching at Steam and/or EA would be way more appropriate ;)

Oh and btw, with my non-Steam Wars, I had no problems at all, installing the mod was easy as pie
Hmm Pie ::)

It took 5 IT techs to google the thread in the Steam forums that gives you a few very likely ways to fix the problem you're having?

Aside, I also don't understand how some people can have fapped up an auto-installer so badly. How the hell did I install Wars, run it to put in my CD Key (I had to figure this one out on my own since this was right at 0.4.0 launch, spent about 10 minutes stressing about that one), and then from that point on the launcher and everything worked flawlessly?

RE: the Steam thing, a shame, but just reinforces what I've said - buying hard copies is so much better for so many more reasons.

Is this that thing where if you downloaded Wars from Steam and didn't run it at least once before starting MWLL you couldn't press the "internet game" button?

Because that took me a whole 10 minutes to figure out.

No, I'm pretty sure he's talking about the "Server Authentication 3" error. I had that too, and it did tick me off for a while, but even I could fix it and I'm a huge noob with computers. It just took a bit of time to contact EA customer support and have them issue me a copy of Warhead to the EADM instead of Steam.

32 hours of work in IT time is like two months of time.....lol

Sure it felt different but so did my wife after the kids were born. A little loose but it still gets me off every time. -- Suspect

I like to think the CD key issue is a one off due to Steam puting Wars on sale and more people buying it, hence EA needing to release more CD keys and stuffing it up.

I bought Wars on steam a couple months ago, and when 0.4.x came out I had pretty much zero problems. I used my old gamespy account from when I played regular crysis, joined a vanilla Wars game, installed MWLL and it just worked. This CD key thing has been a bit of a disaster but hopefully steam/EA will get their shit together in a bit and the whole process will become much less painless. It'd be good if the currently broken keys start working too.

I would like to point out that there is _nothing_ we can do to improve things on CD Key issues. These are totally unrelated to MWLL and already happen when you just try to play Wars itself. Contacting EA on our behalf to tell them it's broken will not fix the problem.

All people can do is read the forum posts about, contact EA for a new key and get the game to work. I am also very annoyed on how Steam seems to handle these issues (they basically shrug it off and don't even offer any real support on it) but I am glad that EA is very helpful and fast in giving out new CD keys. That tells me that they KNOW there is a problem, otherwise they wouldn't give out new keys like that (10 minute online chat? No way they DON'T know about it ..).

Also I am glad there are still people willing to go through this mess to actually play our Mod. If there was a way that we could just activate keys for you we would do it, but that ball lies at EA and we can't touch that one.

Cheers,
Seraph

I fixed the CD-Key error, just by putting it into the right form.
in the registry, it was just a single chunk like: "xxxxxxxxxxxxx"
We all know Keys dont look like this, so i added a dividing line between each 4 characters, so that it looks like:
"xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx", and save that.
after that, the authentication 3 erros was gone, and till today, it hasnt returned.
so much about the big problem that is existant there...  ;D

Might be of great help to everyone having the CD Key issue. Perhaps you could write a quick step by step guide on how to do this for those that are having the problem. Not everyone knows how to go into the registry and edit a key for an installed software. Share the knowledge!

I bought it from STEAM about an hour before the announcement.  I have had no problems what so ever. Not really sure what is going on here but it's not that big of a deal.

There is nothing wrong with STEAM. Some of you like to bitch a lot. You do realize that if gamespy goes down, then no one can play. I don't care if you have the damned disk or not. BTW, you don't have to have STEAM running to even play MWLL.

Either way, your gameplay is entirely at the mercy of gamespy. Doesn't matter if you bought the disk or not.
