Epic Match for the ages
« on: January 04, 2011, 05:18:49 AM »
This was on MWLL#1 TX server in TC_Marshes

Tickets left:
3-0

Time left: 9min

What I liked about the match:
1) The teams were mostly even the whole match AND consisted of the same people consistently.
2) Use of mixed assets to try to capture/seige the middle base.
3) Use of light mechs/vtols/vehicles to scout and harass effectively.
4) Ups and downs of tickets. We were down 100 early, then up 50, then down 10!  Rollercoaster ride!

Honorable mention to Mechman, for shouting out orders to me while I was getting owned at the beginning of the match.

Yea those matches are always fun. We actually had a 0-0 draw the other day on Mirage. Another good match on Kagoshima this morning sometime.

There have definitely been some great matches lately.
People are learning the mechanics of the game and also, the vets switch teams when its too one-sided.

Also, I haven't been firebombed lately, so I'm not raging.

I just think the timer when one team is out of tickets (2 minutes I think) schould be upped a bit to, say, 10 or 15 minutes...

nah, 5 would be best IMO

once you pass 8 minutes it gets old fast, so I think 5-8 would be best

EDIT: damn TLL stackers, the composed nearly half of the enemy team! [/sarcasm]

Yeah that was a great match  :D

I joined with 48 min. left and figured it would be almost over but was surprised when we were still fighting furiously with a few minutes left to go, gg to all in that round.

It's a server side setting (Null Ticket Wait Time).

5-15 minutes could be pretty boring though if e.g. a last BA decides to hide in a remote spot.

We had a round on thunder rift today that was epic.
I took out three demos in the last battle myself with Mrbubbles.

We ran out of tickets but Clan had only 2 left with 40 seconds left null ticket time and I had two juicy clanners in my sight.

Then... THEN!!!!! Server crash.

Fail.

Best and closest game I've played in a long time. It's great playing with people who communicate with one another. GG to everyone who was there! :)

We had some good teamwork going there, with lighter assets running to capture lightly defended bases, heavier units heading to more contested zones, and everyone calling out enemy positions. None of this mute globbing you sometimes see, with an entire team standing in one place letting all the CPs get away.

I think the first tipping point was capturing the northern base. It was after that when we started catching up in tickets for the first time. Kind of funny, actually - they had launched most of their attacks on the dropship from that base, so I expected it would be crawling with Clanners. I charged in with my Demolisher all ready to let rip at the defending legion, to capture the base or die trying, to... And it turned out to be vacant.

About the zero-ticket timer...Perhaps it would be better if the timer didn't start until all bases are captured? It'd give the losing team a chance for an Epic Last Stand (which I'm always in favor of) without letting some BA sit in the corner of the map for an hour.

I was really surprised that the Northern base (B4) was never retaken by the opposing team, Mechman.

I am again really digging the Thanatos once again.
It's mix of speed and well, speed.

With the Prime, you can scout it out long range and out-range brawlers with the ERLL and MRMs
C3 REALLY helps your team, apparently.

With the Variant C, you can go invisi-passive and just wreck big mechs and Longtoms.
- Took out a Longtom while it was guarded by mediums and MASCed back to base.
- Flanked a Loki, Puma, Uller, Demolisher and Uller that were trying to capture the Dropship.  Severely damaging each one (2 kills) and foiling their capture.

I only saw one serious attempt to retake it, by a Bushwacker and Shadowcat. It was just a couple minutes after the base was captured, after I had just left to attack D4 but was still close enough to pull back, and we had several people sitting there as well (I know Davion Devil was there, and I think you were too, Nitro, weren't you?). The Shadowcat was destroyed and the Bushie retreated. I wasn't at that base afterwards, so I'm not sure if they went for it again.

Speed and armor. The Thanatos isn't just fast for its weight - the Thor and Loki have the same speed - it also keeps its heavyweight armor. And it is relatively resistant to coring with its thin CT. Remember that time you had that Puma after you and survived with critical damage across the board? That happens a lot with Thanatoses. (Thanati? Thanapedes?)

Later in that game I was using a Catapult prime for a while, and found it quite useful. A long-range missile boat that doesn't have to worry too much about closing distance, as long as it doesn't get in over its head. I probably did more damage with my MBLs than ELRMs.

That Shadowcat destroyed my back torso and you and Davion saved my hyde!
It occurred with 3 Thanateese that I had a sliver of life remaining and limped/JJ back to base.

I feel that it's hard to LRM in TC, even with the long distances.  There's always a GECM lurking mech, or Longtom, or Aero  somewhere to take you out.
In fact, I'm usually that GECM lurking mech ;)

I gotta try out the ELRM Catapult.
I've had major success with the MRM Catapult in Kagoshima, where medium ranges rule.

Quite right about LRMs in TC. I have a great deal of trouble with Longtoms. GECM mechs are dangerous as well, but the Catapult prime fares better than other LRM boats, especially since it has BHP to see them with. Once, in another game, I even took out a charging UAC loki by coring him with MBLs and jumping out of his line of fire while recharging. Just barely made it with a sliver of armor left. JJs are even more useful now than in 0.3...

Aeroes aren't as much of a problem on Marshes, since there are only VTOLs and even they are only available from the central base. On other maps, the Catapult still has JJs to avoid heavy aerial ordnance. Aeroes are still major threat, but not instant doom. Plus the Catapult's BHP means you'll get better advance warning of aero passes.

The best place for LRMs on Marshes that I've found is near the center of the map, with the wide open airstrip. Plus the VTOL landing pad can be used for reloads, even for mechs.

This was a hella-epic match. Started off badly for our side, but like you said, it rollercoastered back and forth. I was on TS with the TLL guys, but was on your and mechman's team. Kept running into them and dying so my KDR sucked, but I was the crazy bastard who started sneaking around re-securing the bases down south. Even did some hunting for their Longtom (killed it) and took out their arrowpult. Had a great gob of them chasing my smoking half melted Puma around for a while which was intense.

Was the first time since the patch I'd used a Demo prime, and it didn't disappoint on defending those two southern bases. I about went nuts trying to hold those down. Snowman and Blue kept coming back to try and take them, never did find their APC. and they kept bringing mechs and tanks in in waves, had to keep repairing. I think I fired the last of my AC20 ammo right as the clock wound down, and I got the last kill (for their tickets) by whacking either blue or snow while they were hiding behind a big storage tank. I think it was Frost who was there with me in an Oro for a while too.

Yes, I am an asshole, I know this.
It is intentional, though usually not too horribly personal.
