"capped" fps in DX10
« on: January 04, 2011, 10:25:39 PM »
When I am running DX10 my fps are running in the upper 40's most of the time ACCORDING to the r_displayinfo 1. The problem is it feels like it is running at a cap of about 20fps CONSTANTLY. There is mouse lag on the menus when I first fire up the game, it also does this in vanilla Crysis Wars. It acts like I have vsync is on when I know for sure it is off. I can run DX9 and it stops, but I get ALOT better performance when it is in DX10. Anybody have any idea on what could be causing this?

System stats are:

Intel Core 2 Quad Q9550 @ 3.71ghz
8GB Corsair
SB X-Fi Fatality
2x GeForce 275 GTX SLI
32" Vizio HDTV as monitor (I have a feeling this is part of the problem)

I'm running dx10 and don't have the same issues... You could get something like FRAPs to check your FPS if you think the Crysis is reporting incorrect numbers.

---just saw your specs.  do  you have the same issue if  you don't OC?---

the size of your monitor doesn't mean much, though the resolution does and I'd imagine you're running at 1920x1080. I'd suggest doing like I did, whereas I used to run at very high settings at 1920x1080, now I run at 1440x900 with medium settings. Also using DX9 helped a lot instead of DX10.

Ok I fixed it it has something to do with Crysis and the refresh rate. I created a custom resolution in the control panel with a refresh rate of 60. I dont have this problem with any other game, but hey it works. After some testing it does run worse in DX10, although DX9 doesn't run too much better either. I've seen the fps drop pretty low on DX9 like low teens lol. I am guessing my processor is bottlenecking my vid cards. I got relative ok fps in .3, but no matter what detail I put it on, I get pretty much the same fps. Oh well I guess I am just gonna have to deal with it heh.

I really doubt your processor is a bottleneck there, 3.71 Ghz quad is freaking fast. I only have the Q6600 which I think is 2.1Ghz quad.

There's some normal lag spikes when loading assets you're probably noticing, read the dev team is already on it :D

Well, if my processor is not my bottleneck then I should be running this game with no problem. Something has to be causing this game to run so freaking slow. I put the resolution to 1400x900 and put everything to Medium/Low settings and got the same fps as I did when everything was high just about. So something is keeping my system from performing.

What drivers are you using? You really should have no problems with that hardware.
Have you made an autoexec.cfg?

If so, you could try some commands to maybe see an improvement.

sys_physics_CPU = 3 sets the physics processing to core 4.

Additionally, you could try the no sound switch to see if maybe your sound card is having issues or driver problems.

My bet is your Card drivers. The newest ones are not always the best for older cards.

My driver version is 260.99 I updated I think about a month ago. I have created an autoexec file for my resolution and s_maxchannels to 128 but that is about it. I will try that sys_physics_CPU = 3 here in a little bit. If it is my cards then what drivers you recommend me using?

I tested that console command and it seemed to have helped a little, but wasn't that big of a difference. I can still drop in the low teens when nothing is really going on. Of course I am running this on DX9 on very high at 1920x1080, tried it on Medium and got about the same average fps, which is is around 25-30 and can drop to 15 sometimes.

try that command, it should tell you the latency for each component of the game, and the latency is probably what's limiting your frame-rate.  We're working on it.

Was getting a lot of latency on System, not quit sure what all this stuff was meaning.

I have gotten to the point I am going to stop playing, I am through with Crysis, its engine is a POS.  I love MWLL, but I can't play it anymore, it has become unplayable for me. I am going to have to wait to upgrade my machine or something because I'm stick of dropping to 15fps with a max of 40 staring at a wall on Medium/Low with 1400x900 resolution, my comp shoudl be able to handle it at that at least.

Your system is better than mine, and I run with everything on High just fine. So you probably have some kind of bottleneck going on that can be fixed.

Have you tried the following:

1) Try using Directx9, and install CCC for Warhead.

2) Try turning off one of the SLI video cards. Crysis is tuned for SLI/Crossfire, but this is a problem on many games.

3) What map are you using as your benchmark? Kagoshima is a beast, and ruins even the best systems. not the best choice for a benchmark unless you are the only one on the map.

4) Double check to ensure nothing is gobbling up resources running in the background. Antivirus, punkbuster, etc.

5) Defrag the hard drive?
