Don't discount its close range use. If an enemy finds your position and runs at you. If you positioned yourself right, you can funnel them into your sector of fire. Then if you aim it right, you can peg them with a shell. Anything under 60tons will get one shotted by such a direct hit. Most times the enemy will rush towards you, making striking them rather easy. Though once under 250 meters you need to bail out and fight them on foot, or get help.

This is best done if the avenue to reach you is in a valley. If you're perched on a hill this doesn't work so well.
If you park it on a hill, you can fire at things that are within about 60 meters. This tends to make your firing platform very unstable though, and it'll bounce around when trying to shoot.

I still do not understand how to shoot from the Longtom. I shake a group of weapons or a mouse button, but nothing happens, it does not shoot :(
Hold the brake (X). Press left control to deploy, then wait a second. You should be able to fire now. Press left control again to undeploy

Type 4 - Hitting grid locations
Rather than using radar, you rely on the map grid and team-mates calling out locations. Eg. you know you are at Grid position B4, Your target is at the upper corner F4, and this particular map has 400 meters per square, so you know you need to shoot 1200 meters in the general direction of the upper corner of F4. This is really hard to do. But some people here can do it reliably. It helps to have teammates spotting for you so you can adjust your shots.

You can use this method in conjunction with the Pythagorean theorem to estimate an extremely accurate range from you to your target. Why I say its not the exact range is because you would have to calculate out the height of you and your spotter in relation to the targets height. Which simply can't be done if you the LT, can't see your target. Anyways, it would take to long to do all the math, by that time the target might have moved. XD

It requires that you target your teammate and remember the range from them to you and the range from your teammate to your target, when they are both standing still of course. If your teammate is farther away from you than your target is the space between them and you is classified as "c", which means you want to find distance of "a". If your teammate is closer than your target, the distance between you and them is always known as "a" and you want to find the distance of "c". You can find out who is farther away from you after your spotter tells you what sector the target is in and since you already know where your spotter is you can take a quick glance at the map and tell who is farthest. This is like an extremely stupefy version of a ballistics formula.

One of the great things about this is you can always be passive same for your spotter but they will have to have a direct line of sight on the target to get a range. This would be perfect for killing those LRM boats that sit behind enemy lines. I wanted to get a little squad going that specializes in this, but no one was interested enough to help, which made me a sad panda. :-\

you have to fix it first with the left shift or left strg button or something.
then it will shoot.
Hold the brake (X). Press left control to deploy, then wait a second. You should be able to fire now. Press left control again to undeploy
Yes, thank you. Already figured out. Brings props when you click "Ctrl".
That is, during the movement is not possible to shoot?
Looks like not a lot of strange for the artillery, which beats are not so far away (1200-1500m). While the projectile flies are not very fast. In general, while not a lot is not a balanced fighting unit, imho.

Nope, no moving fire for artillery.
Then you need Arrow Missles.
Thump-Thump is purely stationary fire support.

I think the shell should move a bit faster, just to give the Longtom the 2000m range it needs. the absolute max is 1800m right now. also would make it better at slow moving targets, and indirect "sky fire", which always takes up to 10 seconds to get there.

So after using the Long Tom on Marshes, I went from having no money to a good 180,000 in a matter of minutes; so I like the Long Tom.

However, the only thing I'm not completely sure about is firing on grid locations.  I understand how you do the math and all, but how do you know if the map has 400M per square, or more or less?  Is there an indication on the Tactical Map?

Measure it out on your own is all I know of. The maps are not consistent. would be awesome if the main map DID give grid sizes.

Yea, I was thinking it might have been in the legend when you hit "m".  Guess I'll have to start memorizing those somehow.

I just read all of this thread and I still don't understand....blue circles...yellow circles....orange circles.......numbers that go up and start to count negative.....pythaga theorum who......

Not to mention I can't just go jump in one and even try to figure it out....and I've only ever been able to afford it once and that was on 0.3.2......since 0.4.3 I have yet to even be able to get one.....and why would I waste over 110k on something I can't use considering it would take a couple hours of playing just to get that much $$$......

There's videos for everything else...why is there not one for how to use this contraption?

The Long Tom is not 110K, its 75K, which I think is pretty cheap.

Using it is pretty easy.  Keep tapping E until you get a mech on your HUD in the bottom right corner.   Then, line up all the circles to the middle of the red box (The red box that shows Nearest Enemy, incase I lost you), then, Look in the bottom right corner where it displays the enemies armor levels, like in regular combat, this also displays the distance the target is from your position.  Now, lets say the target is standing still, because thats easier, and is 850M away.  You line up the gun so its pointing towards the target, then just keep moving the gun up until the reticule shows 850M as the "Range to Impact" (I think it says)  Then shoot.

As for the keep looking up thing.  If you throw a ball at a 45° angle, it will go farther than throwing a ball at an 80° angle, you know what I mean?  This is helpful because if there is an enemy 600M away from you, but you're separated by a mountain, you certainly can't shoot through the mountain, so you shoot over it.  After you aim the gun so high, the shell wont go as far.  So if the gun is pointing 90° and shoots stright up, its not going to go anywhere and just come stright back down.  That's about as good as I can explain it.

Ofcourse in real life that wouldn't happen thanks to wind and such.

Ask for cash, it's simple and helps the entire team (press U and type"Has anyone got [required amount]K?"...just be sure to pass the cash to folks that ask (using Right Control and the arrow keys) when you have the cash spare (or just when you think you might not be coming back as a precaution, that way folks will always lend you when in need....cash in this game is often use it or loose it so pass it around as much as possible for the good of the team.
