Personally I liked the adding of ammo because it added a little more cognizance than the first one. Rather than just running in and shooting like crazy you actually have to watch your ammo.

Although any realistic army would probably prefer unlimited ammo over clips if they could ::)
Especially if a highly trained commando can only carry a small bunch of clips with him, because... Actually I've got no clue why >_>
Why the heck did everyone switch to ammo based weapons again?

only reason I can think of is because when you got all the high level equipment late in the game you could have a machine gun that never overheated, just fired forever. But none of the other weapons really could do that as far as I recall.

The only character I've finished ME1+2 with is an Infiltrator, Pistols+Sniper Rifles and those really got the short end of the stick in ME2...
The best Heavy Pistol (discounting DLC) has a whopping total of 24 shots and often took 3+ hits to kill a single enemy, the Widow Sniper Rifle wasn't much better at 13 shots total, although those were pretty much one hit kills and SMGs? Let's just say spraying an enemy isn't the best choice if you haven't got much health ;)
In big fights, I often had to use the cloaking ability to run up and gather up ammo :-\

I really love the mass effect series. I am even replaying them to get my single player story shot and to have a renegade biotic character :D  (killed the Rachni queen - Nigga don' mess with DA SpectA!! - hope to see clues to this but I think I will not). I grew up with BG and played most of them. I still compare RPG styles to BG and Diablo with Diablo being a mindless point and click fest designed to destroy your mouse finger and BG is a deep and rich reward for people who have the patience and take the time to really get into it.

Even NWN was less a real experience for me than BG even though it was still very good. I felt it had less puzzles and less challenge and I feel a lot of games have these days. I can even say that RPGs are dumber than they used to be :'(  KOTOR was phenominal and I really fell for that one too. Dragon Age was a bad story done well. Demon army rises and you are the only one to realize the danger? Is this really all you could come up with? The world itself was deep and rich and I really enjoyed everything but the main quest. I only finished that when I ran out of other things. In my opinion a game (especially an RPG) is a medium to tell a story and it is more important to get the story right than the medium. That said a bad medium can ruin the best stories. And a great medium does not need a medium (nod at MW:LL)

Even though mass effect is a lot more FPS (and therefore direction Diablo style = bad) it was still about the story and I was driven to see what happens. I do not mind sacrificing a bit of non linearity to get a better story in a game. Books are also very linear and I very much enjoy them :P
See the attached wallpaper. It just oozes atmosphere and that is what I loved about ME/BG/KOTOR (and it saved DA from itself)

Summary: I am with you Snow and I really need to play this. I do not feel like waiting another year!!!! >:(

I share your opinion.

It's really about how to define "RPG". I have seen soooo much stupid nerdrage on the web because Mass Effect didn't have like 20 different talents affected by 10 distinct character stats. In my opinion role-playing is about the role, not about working through spreadsheets to skill your character. And Mass Effect (1 & 2) was one of the few series until now that really gave you the feeling that you actually shaped your character, his decisions, his story. Although the dialogue options or story decision points might not have had that big effect on the story as a whole, it felt entirely different. Tha game was scripted in a way that the player received those decisions as actually important and meaningful. That's where most "traditional" RPGs fail, sadly.
But if people still reject ME as an role playing game because you don't have to bread above your skill set for hours, then by all means, call it an action-adventure game. Such fuzz about such a little detail...  :o
