High five for Sound Effects Developers
« on: January 11, 2011, 10:32:27 PM »
I think the sounds are the most unappreciated part of this game.  They're great! Many unique and distinct sounds and they're all very well done.  I would like to say thanks to whoever worked on this part for getting things perfect in the beginning.

I only wish we could play music in-game. :)

Yeah the new sounds kick ass.  I LUV the heavier lazor sounds and they oooze destructive power.  The thunder crack of the mPPC has also always been a favorite of mine.

I use Sony Sound Forge Pro 10 for recording and editing, and use an ancient Cakewalk sequencing programme for more complex sound assembly.  I have numerous plug-ins for both.  Sound origin varies from field recordings, software synthesis, hardware synths & samplers and borrowed samples that have been heavily modified.

All of the sounds are ultimately put into Firelight Technologies FMOD Designer to give the dynamic control and create the events that the game engine calls.

I think Landros uses Sony Vegas, which is essentially Sound Forge Pro + video editing facilities.

My MWLL "workspace" pictured, more tidy than usual.

@ KingleerUK:  Is that a Steel Battalion controller I see on the floor????  If it is, do you have it working with your PC and/or with MWLL?  If you do, I'd love to know the set up!!

You've clearly not seen his extensive video tutorials.

Not to config the controller dude, realised i didn't mention that before.

Use some internet sleuthing, more fun that way.

Ah, I see...bummer.

I've done a bit of digging in the past, but the last time I searched no one had a work-up for Windows 7 64bit  ::)

Sound is always unappreciated, but always pretty geat imo. Esp. like the UAC5 / UAC2 sound effects... p cool + thundercrack on manpack PPC.
When will full game/demo/beta be released?
We're planning a beta release in the next *very* few weeks. At this time, we can't be more specific. Please stop asking.

No, I will not stop asking.

if there werent limitations from the engine in the first place we would really be going crazy for the sound and i am sure we would be all the more impressed because iirc leer had to do extensive work just to cram everything in let alone develop everything , i think, on his own.

George Lucas once said that he wanted the sound and music of the star wars trilogy to be so developed that it 'could' tell the story without dialogue.  The auditory realm is key to enjoyment of games imo.  I always loved R6:Ravenshield for the gun sounds it had.

That's a pretty sick set up Leer.  You write any chunes?  If so what kind of music?  I tooled around with FLoops and Cubase SX for a while a few years back.  I never did invest much money in hardware but it's amazing what a CPU and software can do these days.

I really like the big bassy thump of the PPCs, and the sound of getting hit by Gauss slugs. It just enhances that "OH GOD WHAT WAS THAT" feeling when you get hit.

Thanks guys! Glad you like em! I particularly tried to stay more realistic or more impressive but pay homage to previous games, especially in the Laser category.  The Heavy Laser for the BA was done by Leer so I tried to keep it consistent with the Mechs also but also sound punchier. Also, glad the PPC's are liked, as I must have had nearly 15 variations until we settled on the current ones. Some with charge up effects! :) Thanks to Leer though for cleaning up the projects a bunch, so you can actually hear them!

I mostly use Sony Vegas for compositing the sounds and Adobe Audition for clean up or post if needed. No real hardware at my place to speak of since my brother has most of what I would need if I did need them.
