Also being a person who wears military "clothing" from time to time I wouldn't mind proper Rank-insignias to put on my shoulders ^^
(Of course I'd only take those of Clan Smoke-Jaguar for hopefully obvious reasons?)
Not rank insignias, but there were faction patches produced, they sometimes come up on ebay.
Nothing is stopping you though from ordering some patches for personal use if you have the time to work over source images  or custom rank ones ;)

.. would there be anything illegal if I "took" an MWLL logo and used it to buy my own custom hat/teeshirt?  I'm seeing stuff online where they'll do embroiders logos on stuff for under $10, with shipping maybe $15 total.

Seems like i'm the last one to the party  :-[  but yeah if we had a contest or some high rez pics of the logo or what not I'd love to buy a hat with a custom embroidery on it :D

What everybody seems to be forgetting here is the simple answer:

If it has MechWarrior in it, you cannot sell it. You can order a custom patch or shirt for yourself I suppose (AFAIK even for personal use you're not allowed to use/display/reprint copyrighted images, etc. without permission, since that infringes on the ability of the companies properly licensed to do so to make money), but for sure the instant you try to sell it (or the printer reprints copyrighted material and sells it to you), you're in copyright violation. In this case, for those who don't know or have forgotten, that IP is owned by Microsoft, who has proven in the past their willingness to sue on any pretext. Additionally, having caught anyone selling MWLL-specific merchandise they'd instantly turn their eyes to this team, and I wouldn't be surprised if they yanked our license and issued a Cease and Desist. Not that they'd need any reason at all, but I'm sure it would be something like "on the grounds of encouraging - or not actively discouraging - copyright abuse." Sure, the DMCA is bullshit, but it is what it is, and it applies directly to this game and the dev team.

I'd like to go on the record as absolutely discouraging ANYONE doing/selling anything that might attract unwanted attention to this mod. If you need an example, try this one where a mod team using Blizzards StarCraft SDK to make a "World of StarCraft" mod has been issued a C&D just, more or less, for making a game too good. The last thing we need is MS deciding we're somehow a threat to their IP and Licensing rights (if they don't actively seek to maintain control over their IP - by doing things like actively hunting down and prosecuting violators - then they risk having said IP declared abandoned and thus public domain) and/or their ability to make money from that IP, then we're toast faster than you can click on the thread. I'm not even really sure we could do Wandering Samurai shirts tbh. There are some questions about this, one of which legitimately is "would anyone actually care," but that's still rather unresolved in my view: in any event if you asked Crim and Kami directly and assuming you receive their permission, I doubt there'd be a problem with doing a one-off personal shirt in terms of legal response, but it's still a pretty fine line.

PLEASE do not use copyrighted IP without proper permission from the IP holders, especially in the case of anything with the word Mechwarrior in it (even just in the MWLL acronym) or any 'mech designs, nor use these forums as a place to encourage others to do so or as a place to discuss legal-dodges and grey areas in an attempt to skirt the law. I believe I can safely speak for the rest of the team when I say we absolutely discourage all forms of piracy or IP-theft/abuse.

Hence the "Living Legends" or "Wandering Samurai" approach, so we could steer around those really threatening legal issues.
We sure dont want to bring down Microshaft´s wrath on this project.
I would pay sour-earned €´s for some Longsleeves with JUST the "LL" or the silhouette from the Samurai in the game´s background on it if that were to be allowed by you, the Developers.
We geeks would sure know what those meant ^^

I understand your urge to have something tangible that is tied to MWLL, but, just as CHHš Siege said, selling(or even making for personal use) anything that is tied, however indirectly, to BT or MW franchise could put the whole project at risk of C&D order from MS lawyers. No one of us wants want this to happen so, again, any MWLL-related merchandise is a no-go. MWLL gallery is pretty much all we can get.

So far all anyone has done is fantasize, ask questions, or provide answers; some of which are more or less official policy, so in that vein I think it should stand as clear evidence of our opinions on the matter for use in searches by future forum members (assuming anyone ever actually bothers using the search function).

No worries :)
