What's your favourite TC map? (again)
« on: February 09, 2011, 05:25:27 AM »
Alright, we had this poll just after 0.4.0 was released, but that was awhile ago and we hadn't had a lot of time to get familiar with how each map played. It's over a month later and by now we've played them all to death, so I want to know what you think again.

Explain why you like your favourite map if you want.

For me it's still deathvalley. It's the biggest map and the most open, and to me it feels like it allows the most varied play. It also works best with really high playercounts, which is the sort of game I prefer.

Easily deathvalley. The map layout and CP location plays to TC's strengths as an open ended objective based game mode.

Each base also has enough breathing room to be it's own little "combat" area and be important, instead of all the CP's being cluttered like in Mirage.

Death Valley. I like them all for the most part though as nice looking as Kagoshima is, it's all very restricted avenues surrounded by difficult terrain which make it challenging to use mobility as a defensive measure.

To be honest, I'm god damned sick of Death Valley. Might be because it always happens to be on when I'm playing. But playing it over and over is making me start to hate it. Get so sick of taking four hours to get anywhere.
I like Marshes the best in looks. But thunder rift has had some really close, epic games.

That's what I was saying. If a medium or light mech can't use its legs, you're better off in a tank.

Another kudos for Death Valley.  Freedom of manuver makes DV the best map, followed by Marshes for much the same reasons.

But Marshes have trees, horrible horrible trees....

I actually like TC thunderrift more the TC marshes.  Though Thunder Rift is prone to landslides if the other team can deep strike and hold the base next to the main base.

I love Marshes, it is open like Death Valley, but has a much better base layout that doesn't support running around in circles chasing phantom cappers. I also like its atmosphere more, but the better base layout is the most important bit.

I like DV the best as well.

Thunderift: No Aero, and poor LT use makes it camp-fest.
Kagoshima: I like it, but the even number of bases combined with a few natural chokepoints causes too many stalemates. Plus the best forward bases allow defenders to hide inside the mech bay or under the protection of a roof.
Marshes: Its also good, but I don't like how the northern base shreds enemies 500+ meters out. Lack of landmarks makes it visually uninteresting.
Mirage: Cap points are too close together.

I voted for Kagoshima because of the elevation changes and how it rewards JJ play.
Also, it looks super nice.  And you can really affect the flow of play by capturing a deep base.
The mech factory bases' layouts give defenders a big advantage, while the outposts are very difficult to defend.  I like that dynamic.

Yipee, me too.  I really like that it is a map tailor-made for lights and mediums to shine.  It also forces you to learn the map and is pretty, pretty, pretty.

The roofs over some of the bases make things real interesting at times as well, from the attacking or defending position.   ;D ;D ;D

DV is a definite close second though.  It is where the circle of death gets crazy goofy ellipsoid or balalallala.  i should not post in my condition... :P

I suck!! But WE are AWESOME.  We started a unit.  What's that?!  YOU WANNA TOUCH MY UNIT?!! :P ^^12thVR Recruitment Page(clickthepic) ;)

Death Valley.  Most of the really fun games I've played happen in here.

For some reason I am horrible in Thunder Rift, but that map is well done too, especially the multi level approaches toward different points.

As said Mirage has the Cap points too close together.  It leads to a very different type of TC game with very sharp almost constant combat and if one side ends up taking heavy losses they very quickly lose several bases.  In addition for some reason it seems like if the Clan can make it to near the IS base it becomes almost impossible to dislodge them.  I suspect this is a matter of how the approaches to the IS base are made, allowing you to sit in one of a couple places and just hammer anything that is coming out.  If you compare the way the approaches to the Clan base work to the IS base you should see what I mean.  If that was fixed I think the map would just generally be more fun.  So maybe put a bit more distance between the cap points so losing a single exchange doesn't completely tip the balance and also consider completely reworking the approaches to the IS base.

I like them all. They are pretty amazing. I would love to see one map with a tug of war layout where the bases are pretty much linear. You can back hack but it's usually pretty clear where the combat is. Also, the further away you get from the home base the weaker the bases get and the greater the asset restrictions. I think it has potential.
