Horrendous lag since my switch to Wars
« on: February 12, 2011, 03:46:47 AM »
so i just made the jump over to Wars recently, but i can't seem to last more than 5-15 minutes into a round before getting completely bombarded by an intermittent lag that perpetuates whatever i happened to be doing when the lag hits and i have no control over anything until it appears to stop (bad connection symbol near middle of screen)

i never had this problem with MWLL on regular Crysis through all of january; this happens on any server, as well, regardless if i have 70 ping or 200 ping, in fact i managed to play on a German server (i'm in california) for about 15 minutes without issue and then got hit hard by it, my tank took a full minute to spawn and when i could finally jump in the weapons list didn't populate and i could drive around but no pewpewpew

the only thing that appears to trigger it is if i end up in the middle of a heated and/or large-scale battle/chokepoint, and even if i try to run away from it the lagging is irreversible until i leave the server

any help/ideas would be awesome, i just got the hang of this game before the Wars switch and am dying to get some more MWLL action, here are my specs if it helps (will be upgrading soon):

intel e6850 dual core cpu
geforce 8800 gtx gpu
eVGA nforce 680i mobo
4gb ram
windows 7 64-bit w/ dx11 (forcing 32-bit and dx9 seems to run a lot better on MWLL though)
DSL 10Mbit down 768Kb up (best internet ive ever had in my area, very reliable and stable, it can't be this)

Hmm... and I thought my ISP was just crappy as hell...  Guess that's not it after all?

-> DSL 1kbit/s down;
no idea about upload xD

"Lag" is such a poorly defined term in most gamers' vernacular that I couldn't even possibly begin to understand what you're talking about.

Low FPS? Packetloss? High ping? RAM swapping?

Lag is traditionally defined as high ping (as your extremely high ping results in you "lagging" behind the server). Nowadays nobody knows anything and calls any kind of slowdown 'lag' which makes it impossible to help, and the ignorant corruption of the word as such as an irritating pet peeve of mine. Sounds like you're talking about low FPS in which case turn off DX10. But otherwise, for the love of Kerensky, learn to describe your problems better than just "lag".

i appear to completely lose connection to the server (bad connection icon near middle of screen), any motion/action i'm performing at that moment (turning, accelerating, firing, etc) perpetuates and i have no control over any of it until the bad connection icon goes away and then i can at least stop my mech/vehicle from whatever it was stuck doing; everyone ELSE on my screen appears to do the same thing until the bad connection icon goes away

FPS is fine, ping doesnt seem to matter, have never had memory issues with this game before, packet loss is a possibility but i don't really know how to check for that; much of this i'd already expressed in my OP

and again, im forcing dx9 and 32bit because i was having FPS issues and graphics problems with 64bit/dx11

I get this sometimes, but I find it happens in one of a couple cases:

1) I am playing on a server where I have a relatively high ping (say... over 150).

2) There are a lot of players on that server (generally somewhere around the 16-18 player mark, though usually it is more)

3) Near the end of a match, especially on TC when one team has run out of tickets.

4) In bad weather.

Now, #4 I know for a fact is on my end, the lines where I am have problems and my connection becomes kinda cruddy.  Number 3 I think is just the server suddenly processing a lot as the match ends.  I suspect #2 has more to do with the server load.  Which leaves #1, where the lag would be because something happens to make my ping go up temporarily and isn't related to Wars at all.

Oddly, I seemed to have these bad connection problems much more frequently before I switched to Wars and since then it has become less common.

Everyone generally gets these lags at the same time, I play with others on Teamspeak and we all have the issue at the same time.

Server side issue on some of the higher unit cap servers.
I hate Aircraft in this game, if I die from one, I leave.  I wish I could just fire back at them from a Mech.

The Wars changeover gave me around a 10-15% improvement on ping. My usual ping to US servers is now down to around 220-230 from 250-270 (up to around 280 at times). Shots are connecting more consistently and Aero's dont warp around like they used to.

I don't know exactly what has changed, but it has been for the better on my end.

Make something idiot-proof and they'll make a better idiot.

don't forget that there still momentary pauses while assets are loaded in sometimes as well.  I haven't noticed they're any worse than the ones back in crysis

(bad connection symbol near middle of screen)

I think he described it pretty accurately :o

But since you're so keen on it:
-Said symbol pops up  (looks like three computers connected by cable; said cable has a huge X through it. The whole thing is RED)
-Controls are stuck at whatever you were doing: accelerating, turning left/right, torso twisting, firing etc.  with the notable exception of ASF-throttle, wich immediately drops to 0
-usually the same seems to be true for any other player on the field, after a while (sometimes 30+ seconds) everything "skips" to their new positions. 9 of 10 times I'm dead by that time
-SOMETIMES, and this confuses me the most, other players still behave as always, as in I can actually SEE them shoot at me, see my armor dwindling and see my death, but I can't do anything about it :(

I do not have these problems just sometimes bad video rendering in some servers, however that is not that common. I still get some players warping in their aeros but I would say that is their connection.
I have a 20Meg connection with insight here where I live, they offer 30 and now 50meg but for me that is not cost effective. (base rate for 10 meg and then exta for the higer speed of aprox a dollar a meg above 10)

I remember back during 0.1 on vanilla Crysis, I was taking off in an ASF.  I got the bad connection once I reached full speed on the runway (Clearcut).  Anyways, I couldn't pull up or anything, but the connection came back just in time for me to slam into the wall.

Server: "No ASF for you!"

as i said on /g/, just do a reinstall because maybe there is a file corrupted somewhere and your connection is getting the brunt of the fault.

reinstalling didn't do anything  :(  though i did manage to play in a server that only had 2 people when i joined, had great fun with no problems until it got to about 10v10 then it started happening again, tried this on a couple other servers and sure enough, i get this problem when the server's almost maxed out

One more thing to try: put sys_physics_cpu 1 in your autoexec.cfg

If you don't have one create it in the crysis wars directory with the following contents:
Code: [Select]
con_restricted = 0
sys_physics_CPU = 1

Alternatively you can also try to use CCC to generate an optimized autoexec and choose 1 for the physics CPU there as well.
<Insert cool content here>
