So, at my wit's end, called my ISP with fantastic customer service to try to combat this issue, and they fixed it by bridging through the crappy modem that they gave me to my dlink router, so even though the modem they gave me is garbage they helped me fix it and the game runs absolutely amazing now; yes it's not the fastest connection ever (10Mbit is the fastest they offer), but i live in a somewhat sparsely populated area and consider myself lucky to have a small ISP around who can compete with the local big boys (Comcast and AT&T)

it's particularly puzzling though because this never happened with any other online game i've played on it, but negating the modem definitely fixed this issue with MWLL on wars

again thanks for all your thoughtful suggestions, but as i'd suspected it was just something on my end

1.  the 8800GTX in the OPs initial post is lacking in memory.  When I ran a 384Mb video card I had the same exact thing.  upgrading to a 1Gb card eliminated that.  it happens because MWLL has such large maps and texture maps it needs actually more than 1Gb at decent settings.    when you don't have it the game engine will suddenly rape your hard drive to refill the cards frame buffer.  when that happens the game basically pauses and hitches while it waits on the rest of your system to move those files.

Sure it felt different but so did my wife after the kids were born. A little loose but it still gets me off every time. -- Suspect

I finally managed to hit F9 to get fraps recording when it happened a couple days ago:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rOvy2_IetOg

You can actually hear me hitting my keyboard like crazy to get my mech to stop asap, but... well... I gave up after 30 seconds, because by that time I was sure I was already dead server-side <.<

(and indeed I was, as you can see in the video)

game engine will suddenly rape your hard drive to refill the cards frame buffer.  when that happens the game basically pauses and hitches while it waits on the rest of your system to move those files.

Well looking at that video you can clearly tell that is NOT the problem I'm having, as the game engine runs at a semi-smooth 20FPS.
Granted my Comp is a bit on the low-end spectrum for MWLL, but I can work with that most of the time.
This problem however is definitely network-related.

Is that 20fps while running fraps or without? Gonna check the vid.

*Edit* After watching the vid, that is some serious connection problem to the server. Do you get that with all servers?

well, even though my problem has been fixed, you have a valid point, and i'll hopefully be upgrading to this lil' guy very soon:  http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102914&Tpk=sapphire%20100312sr

just wish i could get a damned AMD motherboard figured out, is it just me or are AMD setups plagued with shit-awful motherboards?

It is indeed while recording with fraps, but it also doesn't really drop that much (maybe 28FPS without fraps)

And I do indeed get that with all servers when a certain amount of players are connected, and also when my sister (using the same line) is loading any page in her web-browser; for that exact reason, pages like youtube have been banned from our home >:-c  (takes about 9 minutes to load a 10 minute vid... don't even get me started on downloads...)
