Areses treads
« on: February 27, 2011, 10:05:10 AM »
I'm just curious as why are this treads

used over these

?

Also why wouldn't treads used by TRO Ares work in Crysis.

..., but this is battletech, and sense is often not made.

Personally, this will cause me to never take the asset and nuke any such tanks I see on the battlefield.

AFAIK it was a technical issue with cryengine, but I don't know the details.

Personally, this will cause me to never take the asset and nuke any such tanks I see on the battlefield.

You mean "TRO" threads or "MWLL" threads?

Uh oh, it's not 100% canon, even though a lot of TRO art is crap! The revision would be much harder to get stuck on hills. Essentially HAARP, you're saying you're never going to use this asset, no matter how good it might end up being, because it doesn't look exactly the same.

No, I wouldn't use it cause inverted treads look like arse and would make no sense in a real-life environment (that is, even more useless than TRO art)
Notice how every modern tank has treads that go up in the front? http://lutz-moeller-jagd.de/Bilder/Krieg/bw_kpz_leopard_2_a6-048i.jpg
Put normal treads and a higher cockpit on it and you have a winner.

you'd basically ram you cockpit into the ground when you where trying to go up a hill...

I really don't get what's so important about it's look, even though it doesn't rly make sense, this is Mechwarrior, do Bipedal 100 ton Tanks make more sense to you? lol
On the other hand tho I agree, it looks kinda silly, plus I think the treads will be this tanks weakness.
They give that tank a huge flank making it easy to hit, which is actually a big problem since it's only a medium tank.
You could compare it to the Uziel or Thanatos, "huge" profile but relative weak armor...
Even tho I'd really love to see a medium tank ingame finally, I'm almost certain this one will suffer from the same problems as Uziel and Thanatos already do.
But that would be a problem even if they wheren't upside down, as they are now it might even be better...
If at first you don't succeed try again, and if you don't try again, you'll be hit in the face with a shovel!

Hmmm, personally I'd be surprised to see that model working in MWLL (even if the treads work), it looks like those missile launchers would either smack right into the Main gun (LRMs) or hit the front cupola above the drivers compartment (SRMs, ATMs).

Maybe it's just the angle but it just looks unworkable without some serious redesign....just my observation and not meant to be anything other than that, I actually love a lot about that model, in particular the treads are beautifully done, with obvious loving care.....it's just that I look at it and see numerous problems (but again that might just be the angle and all might be fine with it....I REALLY hope so as I love my tanks).

What I would say is "Where is the Schrek?" we saw it in pre-beta footage and a mini-Awesome would be very usefull, so although I'd love to see a working Ares, where is the Schreck?

Did anyone else read the title as "Arses Thread"  ;D ?  Thanks Zwei, I'm now going to think Arse everytime I see the Ares in-game (if we do see it in-game)....not to mention that I now imagine you as Gollum, maybe the plural is the same as the singular for this machine as "Areses" is very awkward?

I expected a thread about a 3-legged Dark Age Mech ...

... but instead it's about the tread aesthetics of tanks ...?

LOL.
