Dawn of War II - Retribution
« on: March 04, 2011, 01:08:51 PM »
Soo . . . Anybody else playing this? O.o
Seems to me as if it's the same Campaign for all 6 Races. Just different Cut-Scenes/Motications to do EXACTLY THE SAME THING AS EVERYBODY ELSE, even if it would not be in your best interest to do so . .
The new game-play-mechanics take some getting used to too . .

I'll probably get it once it's cheap, still haven't finished the Chaos Rising campaign. ::)
But having the same campaign was to be expected, making a unique one for each race would have been a ton of work and not something they'd just put in an expansion...

To be fair, with all the effort they are putting into Space Marine, I'm not too fussed if Retribution is a flop or not.

I had it on Chaos Pre-order. I enjoy the DoW2 games and the Retribution Beta had more of an Army management to it unlike the Squad management in Dow2/CR.

Besides, if I get bored of it, I can always switch back to Dark Crusade, play the Firestorm over Kronus/Kaurava mod and experience super awesome 40k times because it's as 'Close to Codex' as we're gonna get without literally making a board game clone.

I enjoyed the hell out of the beta, installing the full version now. Thanks for the thread, or I wouldn't have noticed that it came out for reals today. :-[

It came out some days ago, actually.
And i bloody hate the multiplayer <.<;,
But i'll brute force myself through the campaign with all 6 races.
It's REALLY interesting how they managed to get enough cut scenes and motivations for all 6 races to do EXACTLY the same, even if it is NOT good for the race you are playing . . for example, when playing ork, you have to stop an ork convoy for some reason . . and by stop i mean DESTROY not halt and take over . .

I'll wait for "dark crusade 2" aka multiple new races that I'll actually enjoy playing (I can only stand space marines, Tau and Necrons. I can't play well with the rest at all)

Played all the way through the Chaos campaign. It was extremely fun, but too short. I really enjoyed ALL of the heroes, unlike with the Space Marines that I was forced to use in vanilla DoW2 and Chaos Rising. All of them feel incredibly useful. The plague champion is great at clearing buildings and healing, the sorcerer has amazing area-effect damage, and the havoc gets a ridiculously overpowered ability that pretty much instantly fries vehicles/buildings if you give him a lascannon. Getting to choose your reward was really nice, too, but the campaign also felt way too easy. Because it's so short your heroes cap at level 10, and before long you can casually brush aside whatever comes your way with only maybe two squads of upgraded marines to back your heroes up. By the time I was up against the last two levels of the campaign, my havoc hero was killing sentinels and bloodcrushers in a single hit, and killing chimeras in two hits. Even then, predators and leman russes would get insta-gibbed by his special ability anyway. Nevertheless, it was a satisfying experience. Much blood was spilled any many skulls were collected. The whole campaign gave me the feeling of being at the helm of an unstoppable tide of destruction, and the general disorganization of all the other forces in the system, because of the fact that, IIRC, you never fight against the same army twice in a row. The ending bossfight is pretty epic, but the ending itself was like... wut.

Oh and I never ended up replacing my chaos lord's special pre-order hammer. ::)

Yah, the campaign is painfully short.
I played through with Eldar and Spess Mehrens allready.
Gonna do Ork, Chaos, Imperialist Guards and Tyranids next.
The only really different Race in playing style are the Tyranids.
You get ONE HERO and that is it. Everything else you have to recruit on the way.
Well, not that i did anything else with Marines and Eldar . .
Basically took my commander and left the other heroes at home in exchange for more troops.
I basically only unlocked traits, not abilities, as far as possible. And when possible, i unlocked traits that would improve the Honour Guard if they were not deployed.
Space Marine Devastator Marines that do not have build up/tear down time for their heavy weapons is pretty sick, once you can field 4 or more of them.
Upgraded Eldar Weaon Plattform Teams are also pretty sick.

In DoW II (and chaos rising) the enemies would always spam vehicles, so I would always spam lascannon devastators with some regular space marines in between. I would always get easy wins but it's not very fun. Do they have any different tactics yet?

I've not observed much vehicle spam in any iteration of DoW2, but with the exception of the Guards no. But then again, they have SO MANY infantry units too...

In the campaign, Vehicles are pretty seldom most of the time.
