What Xbox fanboys don't realize Halo stole from.
« on: March 12, 2011, 12:28:39 AM »
Don't get me wrong, Halo was a great game, and then it was kind of meh for me, until Reach, which was a good game too.  I dislike Halo fanboyism though, probably more than COD fanboyism, just because it's been around longer.  They claim Halo was so innovative and new, and don't realize how much supposed "new" material was borrowed from other games and movies.

Claim:

Halo was the next choice, for bringing FPS’ to consoles, introducing regenerative health and solving the tricky issue of multiple weapon swapping by limiting the player to 2 guns at a time.
From: http://www.thatvideogameblog.com/2009/10/22/molyneux-picks-his-top-5-most-innovative-games/

Truth:
I don't even feel I need to go in-depth with this one.  I guess GoldenEye was not an FPS, and the Nintendo 64 a console.  Regenerating health?  That was done in 1994 with Wolverine on SNES.  Limiting a player to 2 guns?  Yeah, that was done way, way before Halo.

Claim:
Quote
Dual wielding is a special combat technique in which a gunman wields two weapons at once, one in each hand. This feature was first introduced into the Halo video game series in Halo 2 and continued in Halo 3.
From: http://halo.wikia.com/wiki/Dual_wielding

Truth: Not too sure if it was the first game, but Goldeneye 64 introduced dual wielding WAAYY before Halo 2.

Claim:
Quote
Vehicular Combat
From: Nearly every Halo fanboy.

Truth: I see this one a lot.  How Halo is the first game to introduce vehicular combat, or a slightly less insulting version, the first game to introduce team-based vehicular combat.  Both of these are dead wrong.  The concept of multi-vehicular combat I can trace back to the Tribes genre.

Other things the Halo series has ripped off:

Aliens (Movie): Sgt Avery Johnson is a near 100% complete ripoff of Sgt Apone.  Then there is of course the line you hear in-game, "Game over man!"  Complete ripoff of Hudson's doomed moment.  In addition, the Pelican dropship looks very similar to the dropship used in the movie.  The level in which you are first introduced to the Flood is very similar to the first encounter the Marines had with the xenomorphs from Aliens.

Avatar (Movie): A recent movie, sure, but Microsoft could at least made it look less obvious that the helicopter/transport in Halo Reach is nearly a replica of the helicopters used in Avatar.

So that's the stuff I noticed so far.  Feel free to add on to the thread with your own personal observations.

Most Halo fanboys are 8-10 yo and therefore lack the ability to remember anything before Halo.

I don't really like console but you can give them one thing... It's easy to setup and get in a game very quick. On pc you have to install a lot of thing before you can even to game.

I really like tweaking my pc to my liking but it's not for every one and this is a plus for pc gaming you don't get stupid 12 yo you only get the smart 12 yo :P

Completely agree.  Even in Counter-Strike, while there's the occasional annoying 12 y/o 1337 h4x0r, the majority of younger guys are pretty mature.

Hop on to an Xbox to play COD...not so much.

Halo would be much better if it wasn't on the Xbox.

Seriously, that controller sucks for FPS. Everytime I play Halo, I spend 20 minutes either looking straight up or straight down before I can get re-used to the controller mechanics. This is EVERYTIME I play a FPS on the Xbox(360). Never had this issue on the N64, PSX, PS2, PS3, or Wii.

Any FPS on the PS3 for example I can jump in and start playing.

Anyway, I don't understand the fanaticism around Halo. Goldeneye 64 was much more fun. Though Halo is good if you got 4 players, drunk, and just want to mess around. By the way, I am not trying to be snarky with that comment. There's plenty of games I get together with friends with drunk with. Like Raid Healing in WoW back in the day, always did it drunk... well I did anyway.

Since no one else seems to be willing to, I'll defend Halo.
* (TLL)Leeko adjusts his tie and clears his throat.

It didn't invent regenerating health, limiting you to two weapons, or dual-wielding. However, it did combine them in an absolutely beautiful way that, at the time, had never been done before. It probably didn't invent vehicular combat in a non-sim FPS, but it did it right and to this day I firmly believe no other shooter has vehicles as well-designed, diversified, and most importantly fun as those in Halo. Another couple of things people seem to take for granted are melee and grenades that can be used without switching weapons. If Halo didn't invent these, it sure as hell got them nearly perfect. Lastly, Halo single-handedly made the xbox. The original was what people bought the xbox for, and Halo 2 was what people bought xbox live for.

I don't dislike Halo.  In fact, I bought the original Xbox just to play Halo.  Returning it once I finished ;)

My problem is with the fanboys who don't know any history behind FPS gaming, and claim Halo invented all these things, and therefore the creators at Bungie are gods for thinking such, "Radically new ideas."

I myself loved Halo and Halo Reach.  Didn't really care for the other 3 as much.

Just irks me beyond belief when fanboys shout at stuff coming out and claiming, "They stole that from Halo."

Played first Halo on a PC years ago. It was so boring that I barely found enough motivation to finish it and I never ever wanted to try any other game of the Halo series. Plot was lame(hell, even ass defect's plot was more interesting), gameplay was extremely dumbed down, AI was utter crap, graphics was nothing special(I can cut PC Halo some slack here yet it wouldn't help the overall feel of the game being lame) so I really cannot understand(no sarcasm here), why there was so much fuss going around Halo series. Booooring.

Halo was a solid FPS for the xbox, but yes Golden eye set the bar for console FPS before the XBRO generation came about.

I can second that. I found the first Halo to be very boring in single player mode. Playing online was better (on PC), tough I was never as hooked with it as I was with the Battlefield series, Unreal (Tournament), or Team Fortress Classic.

When Halo was first announced I was totally hyped. For those who don't know, at the beginning Halo was planned to play on a open world szenario, with humans and covenants fighting all over the place. Something like a awesome mix of Far Cry 2 (open world), Battlefield (vehicular combat), Half Life (awesome hostile alien races), and that all in space.
Then they started to tune everything down again. "Open world" became "open areas", "open areas" became "levels". When they were finished all that was left was another overly hyped generic FPS. I didn't even buy it when it came out on XBox at first (tough I did play it at a friends house), and even when the PC version was out I waited. The only reason why I have it is that I got it as a birthday present a few months after release...  ::)

Haven't played any other Halos besides the first one.
