Tried the consoleshow fix, it seems to work (or at least does not break anything).  Is there a corresponding consolehide that we could use to automate opening and closing the console each time we start the game?

Yes consolehide is indeed the command you could use if you wish.

I hit escape to skip the intro anyway. The console closes when I do this.

Adding consolehide after is certainly something you could do.
