;D

I liked the Vanilla versions (although they were pretty easy), Barbarian Invasion expansion for R:TW was a bit harder and very enjoyable though.

Never played the EB mod (I assume that was for the expansion?)  but played the Rome:Total Realism mod to death (Seleucids FTW!) and was liking how the Warhammer mod was looking (don't know if they finished it though).

@Bill, never played any of the Total War games in MP, for me they were like Civ games, something intrinsically SP, much beard scratching and philostopising, the MP, as it was single battles and micro management without the pause button never really interested me that much.

Having played every single one of the games, I can say this is the best combat AI they've had, and it's still largely retarded.

I've never played the MP of any of them either (besides a few LAN battles), but just sticking the idea out there as being charged by Daimio all the time get's a little silly.
Just pretend the AI overlord's screen is off somewhere else ;)

I too am enjoying S2:TW. Of course with all the bugs for MP, and with so much disparity in the matchmaking system in terms of units, rank, skill, etc., I find myself either constantly crashing, or constantly getting the shit stomped out of my army (naval battles are quite easy, however), by rank 9's.

On the other hand, of the fights Ive had with decently matched players, I usually win now, thanks to my "underhanded" tactics.  8)

Looking for someone to play a multiplayer campaign currently. PM me your steamID if you're up for it.

I started out with RTR, it was pretty good, but EB was just on another level. That mod was imply amazing, as both a gamer and an ancient history student, it had RTR beat to hell in the "realism"  department. Though the Ai was always slower at building armies in EB than in RTR, probably because there were so many effin units it got confused.

I loved to play as just about anyone, but I found myself playing as Rome, Macedonia, the Free Greeks, and the Parthians.
I had Alexandrian tactics down to perfection, sadly I can't say I ever mastered the Roman manipular system, the game engine was always clunky when trying to use the "checkerboard".
I played a little MP, and was trolololololol good with elephants, never used them in SP (serious business mode) much though.

Also, best unit ever, bar none, GG; is now my favorite historical ancient weapon/soldier, which is saying alot cause I love them all:
The elite infantry of the Thraikian tribes are armed with the heaviest of Thraikian weapons, the rhomphaia. Unlike most other Thraikian warriors, these warriors can afford relatively heavy armor and are thus armored with chain mail or scale cuirasses, Phrygian helmets--often with elaborately moulded cheek pieces, bronze greaves and a pelta. They are armored infantry killers of great renown, well able to chop their way through heavily armored enemy soldiers. These soldiers can even be effective against armored horsemen, since their large rhomphaia have been known to sheer through the legs of horses. In the right hands, this band of warriors can be a devastating battle-winning force in itself.

Historically, there were relatively few of these soldiers in any Thraikian army, but they were always at the forefront, where the fighting was thickest. Each had risen to a position of power within his respective tribe, often they formed the elite troops of the chief or local king. The Rhomphaiaphoroi represent the pinnacle of the Thracian military know-how. In the old Thraikian way of battle, the Rhomphaiaphoroi would form the brunt of a decisive charge, once the Peltastai had worn down the enemy. Their charge was nearly unstoppable, and often led to outright routs against less stalwart opponents, as their fearful Rhomphaia, sturdy weapons composed of nearly two meters of heavy iron, could pierce thick armor, and cleave limb from torso with little trouble. With their row of long iron points, bands of Rhomphaiaphoroi could also defend against oncoming horse, and when wielded by a skilled swordsman a single blow could hamstring a horse or sever an enemy’s limbs.
I still have EB installed I think, and I also have Stainless Steel for Medieval Total war II, and Darthmod ultimate commander for Empire Total War. If anyone has any of those I'd be glad to battle you. :D

Total war games> Company of heroes > C&C (for memories and lulz) > all other RTS games.
Starcraft? Whats that?  ;)

I wonder how those Thracians would fair against the Macedonian Sarissas employed correctly?...I've never tried that (Greek Armies never appeal to me, Phalanxs are things I break up  ;D), I do however know what a Falx can do to Roman heavy infantry, and those Rhomphaii look like Dacians on steroids, nasty!

I'd still prefer to just ride Cataphracts or Elephants through them, or better just force them to run around until exhaustion for fear of getting flanked by light Cavalry, and then run Elephants and Cataphracts through them  ;D

One of my favourite games of RTW was as Cathage, fighting Rome in Sicily and on the waves (the Navy took the lion share of production, and the treasury was bleed dry rushing ships and hiring every merc in North Africa and Spain despite making money hand over fist) this was made harder as the various Greeks were also engaging me on the seas (Beware of Greeks bearing gifts), and the AI loosing Naval battles despite the odds time after time on me :(

All the while I was desperately holding onto the colony of Corduba using what few Iberian mercs were available and masses of the very light Numidian Cavalry (at least they could gallop for long periods without tiring), it seemed like each turn brought another attack on Corduba by another massive Iberian swarm, another sally forth from the city walls and another series of precise maneuvers with the Cavalry routing the flanks/rear....each battle was awesome fun.   The attrition rate really pushed upon what reinforcements I could send from Africa but eventually as I gained control of the waves I started to be able to ship in Libyan mercs and newly built Peoni infantry along with the fresh horses and so the situation stabilised (although Spain was alwaus just a drain on the army...perhaps Baal had offended their Bull god?), for battle after battle at Corduba my forces were ~80% Cavalry employed in a defensive engagement!....very scary, lots of pausing to reposition my light horse squadrons and a lot of really good fun 8)

After that I became rather obsessed with my Sacred Band Cavalry working with my Elephants and later on as other factions I had fun with Horse Archers, Cataphracts and those mad suicide chariots....thus my love of the Seleucids.  So I've overlooked most of the Heavy Infantry options for many years (once you've smashed through anything on the ground with Elephants and rode the Cataphracts in a massive wedge through the gap, Infantry seems like something for mopping up what hasn't run away already ;) ).  'Will definitely have to give BE a go and see if it's as good as you say.

Yeah, EB = Europa barbarorum. It works with 1.5 or 1.6

The only thing I remember doing in vanilla was building ass loads of catapracts, elephants, and chariots, then charge everyone and they would always run before I even touched them. derpderpderp. :P

I would always have my Thracians on the flanks of my phalanx with Thracian peltasts on their flanks. Their main purpose was the be the hammer to the phalanx anvil, I saved my companion cavalry to go general hunting.
I really cant remember how strict the exhaustion parameters were in vanilla, but in EB they were brutal. You DO NOT want to run cataphracts anywhere unless charging or they ill get tired quick.

Elephants are gimmicky though, even masterfully piloted they still will buckle if your enemy is competent enough to always have some cheap skirmishers ready. Chariots are even worse. But, both will tear the SHIT out of cavalry, particularly chariots.
In EB I fear a couple units of Tindanotae WAY more than elephants, those dudes just refuse to die.
