Low FPS MWLL - All settings low/off
« on: March 24, 2011, 05:03:05 PM »
So.. here's my dilemma.

I have a Digital Download copy of Crysis Wars. When Playing MWLL, I should in theory get a decent FPS rating for 0AA and 0AF with all low settings, but for some reason I am not. My fps will max out at around 25 unless it's on a small map like thunder rift, then I may hit 30. But average is around 20-23FPS, with lots of Dips into the teens, and sometimes I'll have a constant 8FPS going on.

I have CCC set, physics is set to core 1, and motion blur is off.

The weird thing is, I can get an easy 25 FPS while playing a game such as Battlefield : Bad Company 2 with x8AA, x16AF, DX11, max texture settings, maxing out everything possible. Lower player servers will average 30-35FPS, and when I'm on a 24 person server, I can easily manage 25FPS, no problem. It's usually higher though.

I have no idea how this feat happens. All of my other games play fine with maxed out settings. But then again, all of my other games I use an actual game disc. I know MWLL is a taxing game, but with all the the settings on low, it really shouldn't be worse than all of my other games, which I can play with settings turned up.

Does anyone have any solution? Here's my specs. I'm guessing it's probably either CPU being slow or GPU's memory not being enough. VRAM allocation shows me using up to 1.4GB after about 20 min into a match, and stays there. I've only got 1GB.

Windows Vista Home Premium 32 bit. Play games with Windows Aero off (Basic)
500wRMS PSU
AMD Athlon 64 X2 2.81Ghz
1GB HD Radeon 5750 OC'd to 810mhz core 1250 memory
3GB RAM (x2-1GB, x2-512)
7200RPM SATA HDD

I might be missing something, but that's what's going on inside of the rig right now.

Did you try to increase the graphics? If the fps don't drop although you set everything to e.g. "medium" than your cpu is too weak for the game.
I'd say your system looks quite fine, i definitely ran Crysis on worse machines than that with graphics set to "high". Graphics RAM should be ok, only the CPU might be a problem in my opinion.

By the way: The problem for sure doesn't arise from your game being a downloaded one. Modern games and Crysis in particular tend to do a full installation anyways so there should be no difference between your game and others.

And another thing: Which resolution did you chose for the game?

Yes, that's the problem.

Triple C (CCC) says I should be able to run Medium settings and get an average of 30FPS. Of course, it's for crysis itself.

When I go to Medium, I'll max out at around 20 if I'm lucky. It's in the Teens for some strange reason on Medium. I can take 20's, but teens are not enough for me. :(

and BFBC2 is a CPU intensive game, or at least that's what I've heard. They recommend a quad core for BC2.

Sorry, my mistake: Try to set things like texture-quality and motion-blur to the highest setting but keep the physics and maybe the sound to the lowest setting possible. There might be others that rely on your CPU, but i'm not sure which ones (maybe particle effects...just try to set everything you consider non-CPU-related to "high", everything else to "low" and run the game).

what rez are you running at?  My monitor's native is 1650 x1080 but i only get 25-30fps.  I drop down to 1440x900 and i jump up to 30-35fps.  both were running AAx2 and in dx9 mode.

I have a monitor with native 1440x900 @ 75hz. That's what it is set at.

that's weird, I was running a 8800gt which should be worse than your card and was getting 20-25fps on medium settings.

Could be the drivers.  I know there's be cases where the newer drivers actually create worse performance on Crysis than the older ones

is your CPU good at overclocking? I recently went from 2.4 to 3.2 Ghz per core on my quadcore and am noticing a pretty good FPS boost during heavy combat (from 10 to nearly 20FPS now). Of course those 32 player sessions are still crap, generally 24 is better.

I haven't tried to overclock the CPU. I'm kind of scared to right now until I get a better cooler for it. It's got the stock heat sink and cooling fan on it. It already scares me as it is.

I also would need to unlock the CPU to OC it, which I'm not too familiar with.

I'll see if they've added newer drivers since I bought it.

That's what I don't really get. I know people with 512 cards that are outperforming me on higher settings. And it only does this for Crysis Wars/MWLL :(

I'm going to guess its not the video card thats slowing you down.  Back when I was at 2.4Ghz I went from a 8800 GT at 512MB to a HD5850 at 1024MB and noticed nearly no difference in MWLL.  But going 2.4 to 3.2GHz quad (with a faster FSB, lower clock multiplier), though I had to buy a new motherboard and CPU fan for it, I'm getting playable framerates at higher graphics settings.

So is MWLL just really CPU intensive? Cause I know people are talking about getting 6950/6970's and going way up in the FPS department. I don't know what CPU they are using though. I know one person was running 90FPS on screenshot with a new card, but he also had a really nice i7 CPU

I also think my RAM is only DDR2, and might benefit from DDR3. I'm wanting to build a really nice PC in the next 6 months or so, so I'm gonna upgrade CPU then.

I just wanna find out if there is a true reason why it's only this game that causes this much trouble. I figure on Low no AA/AF that it wouldn't be THAT bad at draining the CPU/GPU

If your CPU is the bottleneck (and it seems like it) then your GPU doesn't really matter. That's why i said you should try to give your graphics card some heavy load in the game so you see if the CPU is limiting your framerate.
In that case only overclocking or upgrading will be an option, nothing else.

And about DDR2 and DDR3: That should not be a problem at all. The only difference would be noticeable in terms of bandwidth but since Crysis has been made during the DDR2-era it will probably not benefit from that too much.

I think, and this is speculation on my part, the problem isn't AA/AF or anything really graphics related (assuming your video card is good enough to run non-modded Crysis at a high enough level), but maybe mostly physics related.  Hopefully the code guru devs will be able to get it squared out, but from the look of things its not easy.

Ram only effect loading times, and DDR3 makes a huge differece compaired to DDR2. But this has no noticable effect on FPs.

Battlefield as you rightly said is really really CPU dependant, and even though you need a good graphic card to run it still, its not as important. If your CPU was better your FPS would more than likly jump up.

Now even though the differece in 2.8ghz to 3.2ghz might help your FPS, you should NOT need to do this to get off low graphic settings which you should easily be able to play. I would defiently up the settings by alot and check your FPS.

My opionion is there is defiently some driver problem, at least with Crysis, have you checked your FPS in Crysis wars instead of MWLL?

dont let SJ Riker hear you say that!  this game is all about the GPU!!!!  hehehe
