Just the way they're handled. We'll have it fixed before the alpha.

Your lasers butcher the server?

Good heavens why?

THEY'RE SO HARDCORE THE SERVERS CAN'T HANDLE THEM.
It's Epic.

So, you tried to implement them as a constant beam, which means that it checks for a hit every frame?

Actually they run something like the freezebeam, but in it's original design it was NOT designed to implement one for everyone, let alone everyone having MULTIPLE all firing.

um correct me if i am wrong

but in crysis the aliens have a freeze ray

and it turns all the grass and trees and people and stuff blue and icy and frozen
so the weapon has to affect all the assets loaded into that area

so surly it would be possible to make a forest burn with the exact same technique
even if the first version was just a change in the color of the shader and a constant damage zone added

after that it shouldn't be to hard to saturate the damage zone or affected assets with particals that conveniently look like fire

then a small piece of code to make it spread to other combustible items upon random chance
and it could extinguish its self after a short peirod (or 2 players could set the whole level on fire then ud see a server hernia)

What would be the point of having a self extinguishing forest fire that didn't burn down the trees? If it did burn down the forest, the asset swapping en masse would be unpleasant on any PC needing less than a 800 watt power supply, not to mention make the server whimper. We're constantly bouncing off the limits of doing things and making the game playable on computers less powerful than the the stuff coming out next year. :-\

So, there's no dynamic deformation of terrain in Crysis? I was hoping to take cover in an Atlas' footprint.

That's kinda funny since we were talking about possible pinups/nose art for the game last weekend.
