New Alienware Machines
« on: April 19, 2011, 05:08:05 PM »
Not sure of people's sentiments towards Alienware, but I am personally a fan.

Just released a new model today - m14x - and a revision of an older one - the m11x.

http://www.alienware.com/Landings/laptops.aspx?~ck=mn

Probably the most ridiculous spec is the fact they are offering 16gb 1333mhz RAM in the m11x form factor (with Dell's obscene mark up of course).

I'm actually a little impressed  by the price of their laptops. Still a little overpriced, but not as bad as I've seen in the past.

Their desktops are still 3x more then they should be though.

I take that back, I just did one up with the specs I've got and it was $6300. I paid $1700 for mine (in 2007) and then did $900 in upgrades recently to keep it up to date.

The problem with alienware is their target audience.  If  you want and can afford their mid to top range machines, you're probably already a PC enthusiastic that will end up building your own.

I am a repeat customer for Alienware. I get them for the excellent performance and outstanding warranty. I have never been disappointed in Alienware out of the 3 desktops and 1 laptop I have purchased. On mid-level systems they often have a price very close to one you would have if you built yourself. In fact, after the $300 in perks I got with my last desktop the price came in under a self-built computer and I didn't have to wait for a few components that were on backorder everywhere else I had searched.

While I'll stick to building my own desktops, they're one of the first places I'd go for a laptop.  They definitely have what seems to be the best cooling solution...should help them live a lot longer than the usual laptop.

Nope, still useless in terms of price/performance and ability to customize . .
Not even the newer i7 k series CPU's in the 15" ones . .

The 15" is being phased out and has been both horribly underpowered and ridiculously overpriced for quite a while now.  It's being replaced with the m14x and on the higher end the m17x.

I bought myself an m11x about six months ago and never have I been more impressed with a piece of tech!  Unfortunately, the premium is a little higher in Australia than America, but for the most part I don't mind, as Dell is brilliant when if comes to warranty and servicing.

I too wouldn't opt in for a desktop from them, but the laptops are things I'm definitely going to continue to get in the future.  Here's a better release article:

I want a 15.6" FullHD Screen, with a Good gaming Graphics Card, one SSD of at least 80 Gigs and one HDD of at least 500 Gigs, 8-12Gigs of RAM, an i7 of the newer K series with the built in Graphics so i can use that one in windumb and save some runtime, maybe a Blu-Ray-Drive . . This all for about 1400 to 1700€
Yeah, i know, i'm hard to please, my girlfriend tells me so quite often too . .

Closest to that request would the be new m17x r3 which has all of those options (bar the 15.6") at 1700€ (that's the German price at least)

Of course, your hard drive and RAM upgrades should be done afterwards...

I'm personally waiting for Ivy Bridge and the m11x r4.  Can't justify jumping on this current one given the fact I only purchased my r1 six months ago.  m14x sounds nice, but I much prefer the inconvenience of not having a disc drive and get a smaller machine.

17,6 is too big for me. No car, too unwieldy. Does not fit into any of my transport cases.

Checked prices recently?  If you're in the US they are extremely competitive for the tech you get.  Alienware, pre-Dell, was enormously overpriced, but (at least with the laptops) they've gotten better.

Edit: just re-read your post, and you were mainly referring to their desktops.  Yes, I completely agree, what they charge is obscene and, as cool as the case etc is, I could never justify spending that kind of money on one of them when I know I could get something with essentially double the performance for about half the cost.  Reminds me about reading earlier today about a guy who was asking advice on some Alienware computer purchases, and everyone was telling him NOT to buy an Alienware desktop, that building one himself (or getting someone else to build it for him) would work out cheaper and more cost effective.  The sod wouldn't listen, he seemed to think buying a pre-built system would mean diagnosing any future issues easier and 'you get what you pay for'.  It wasn't the fact he'd chosen to buy an Alienware desktop that incensed me, it was the fact that he just trashed any advice given to him, which he had asked for in the first place.

Anyways, end of my little rant there ;)

17,6 is too big for me. No car, too unwieldy. Does not fit into any of my transport cases.

Good call, if I was in your situation I'd do the same.

With Laptops, you have no choice but prebuilt usually, so there i can see the appeal of such things like alienware. but the price/power ratio is just too bad fopr me with them.

Yeah, if i had a car, i would not have this problem, just get me a good 17,8 Incher or so . .

I will never get suckered into buying another Dellienware.  I would urge you to seriously reconsider.

Also, as I am not fluent in Spanish, their customer support is hard to understand.
